Anderson And Robinson Win The Aba On The Mobile-Delta With 14.70 Lbs-Full Results And Pic Here!

Satsuma, Ala. – May 30, 2015 – In an area that has seen a significant volume of water rushing through it.  The Mobile Tensaw River Delta waterway has become slightly more difficult to pattern over the recent weeks.  While the Alabama Bass Trail features some of the best team anglers in the South, having some understanding of this unique fishery was sure to be an asset.

The team of Jeston Anderson and Robbie Robinson; locals to the waterway, proved that having an understanding of what was happening with the water flow and the tidal system was beneficial on this fourth stop on the ABT Southern Division.  Anderson and Robinson came to the scales at Live Oak Landing in Stockton, Ala. midway through the weigh-in and placed a 14.70-pound limit on the scales to take the lead.  Their limit held up to the end, even sustaining a challenge from division Angler of the Year Leaders Keith Dees and Tommy Walley, and Coby Carden and Chris Rutledge – who tied for second place – in the process.

“This is my first big win, and it really means a lot to do so on our hoe water and to beat these guys that we compete against down here adds to it,” said Anderson.  “I thought that we had blown it today because we lost a few key fish, and I was sure that it cost us; but it worked out and I’m humbled an honored.”

Robinson, who has competed and won on large stages himself in the past, said it was all about being able to read the water.  “We caught them on a swimbait and a white swim jig, as well as a black and blue Flippin’ jig,” said Robinson. “But really, it was about being able to read the water levels and know where we needed to present to lure in order to get the right bites; I’m really glad it worked out.

Anderson and Robinson were the ABT 2014 Southern Division Anglers of the Year, but this is their first win on the tour.  They earned $10,000 for their win as well as the Alabama Bass Trail logo bonus for being the highest finishing team with an ABT logo on their clothing.

Dees and Walley, who came into the event in the lead for the 2015 ABT Southern Division had said that they were going to fish to win, but they needed to avoid a crash as well.  “We took a huge risk last year and only weighed three fish here on our home water,” they said.  “We still too a little bit of a gamble here, but it was more of a cautious gamble and we fell a little short.  But, we extended our points lead going into the final event, so we feel pretty good about it.”

The pair used custom painted Spittin’ Image topwater baits and spinnerbaits to produce their weight, and together pocketed $4,500 for their win as they finished tied with Carden and Rutledge, who also received $4500 for their day on the water.

Tullis Lanier and Joey Davidson continued their strong season by finishing fourth with 13.54 pounds; earning $3,000 and Foster Bradley and Britt Lemley weighed 13.15 pounds to finish fifth and pocket $2,000.

The Diet Mountain Dew Big Bass of the tournament went to 165h place team of Greg Griggers and Barry Landrum.  Their 5.57-pound largemouth bass anchored their 10.32-pound limit earning them $500 for their paycheck finish as well as an additional $500 for the Diet Mountain Dew Big Bass.

Unfamiliar Waters No Problem For Elite Series Rookie Of The Year Challenger David Williams

When the Bassmaster Elite Series moves to Kentucky/Barkley lakes next week for the Zippo Bassfest tournament, Elite Series rookie David Williams will once again be fishing waters he has never been on before. But, for Williams, that's not really a bad deal.

“It's my first trip to Kentucky Lake so it's going to be an experience like all the rest of them have been,” said the Maiden, N.C., pro who, while a rookie on the Elite circuit, has a lot of experience in FLW Outdoors tournaments. “Most of the BFL All Americans that I made were on lake where it was my first time there.”

In those All American championships Williams finished in the top 20 all four times, with two top 5s – 5th in 2013 and 3rd in 2012. He has fared nearly as well on the bigger stage this year in the Elite Series and at midway of the season finds himself ranked 3rd in the Rookie of the Year standings.

He won the Bassmaster Southern Open Series standings in 2014 to qualify to fish the Elite Series this year. And, although a rookie on the Elite circuit, he won the Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship in 2008 to qualify for the 2009 Bassmaster Classic.

Although April was not a very good month with finishes well down in the standings at Guntersville and on the Sacramento River in California, Williams finished 16th at Lake Tohopekaliga in March to start the Elite season and then surprised everyone – including himself – with a 5th place finish at Lake Havasu in Arizona in early May.

“The season has gone pretty well,” Williams said. “I have had two good events where I have been in contention. If not for one bad day in Texas with a mechanical issue on my boat, I probably would have had a shot to win there. And I was just one or two bites away at Havasu.”

Ironically, he said, his best practices were at the two sites where he did not do well in the tournaments.

“On the California Delta I was on so many big fish it was unbelievable. I could not wait for the tournament, but when it started my fish went South. I could not figure out how to catch them.”

Havasu was where everyone sat up and took notice, however.

“Havasu scared me to death. It has no history at all, nobody knows anything about it. You could literally see fish swimming 15 to 20 feet deep. Initially I thought the tournament would probably be won by a drop shot or finesse fishing.”

But in practice, he discovered the fish were just like bass back home. They would hide under any cover they could find.

“They would bite, too. They were not shy at all, like you would expect in clear water,” said Williams, who weighed four daily limits for a total of 62.14 pounds to take 5th place and move into 3rd in the ROY standings.

So, while he has never been on Kentucky Lake, the mystery of the fish there does not faze him, he said.

“Anytime I go somewhere that I don't have any history I do my best,” he said.

That could play into his favor for the Kentucky Lake Elite, but the familiarity he gains in practicing for and fishing the Elite tournament next week could set him up with just enough experience to do well in the 2015 All American which is scheduled just two weeks after the Elite tournament.

“Hopefully I can find them pretty good next week during the Elite tournament and have some fish to go back to in the All American,” he said.

Early Bite Key To Winning Flw College Fishing Southeastern Conference Tournament On Lake Hartwell

It might just be the early bird that gets the worm – or in this case, the first place trophy – in the third and final FLW College Series Southeastern Conference tournament Saturday on Lake Hartwell.

The herring pattern is on – but it does not last very long, said Josh Rennebaum, one of the University of South Carolina collegiate anglers in the tournament.

“The first hour and a half of the morning it's typical schooling with fish blowing up on the herring, but by about 8:30 that bite is gone,” said Rennebaum Thursday after the first day he and teammate Patrick Walters had to practice on the lake. They caught the schooling fish on a rainbow shad fluke and a Lake Murray Clear Dunfish topwater.

“We caught two or three decent largemouths on the topwater,” he said. “Then we went to the drop shot and caught some decent spotted bass on a green pumpkin worm out on the points.”

Rennebaum said he and Walters fished the main lake area Thursday, mostly around the Gum Branch launch site, but they plan to spend their second day of practice Friday upriver in search of some larger largemouth bass.

With the fishing tougher than expected, Rennebaum said he expects it will take about 16 to 17 pounds to win the third and final qualifying tournament for the Southeastern Conference Saturday.

“I would guess it will take about 12 pounds to make the cut,” he said.

Rennebaum, of Chapin, and Walters of Summerville, actually qualified for the Southeastern Conference Championship to be held on Pickwick Lake Sept. 26 after finishing 8th in the tournament at Guntersville May 2.

“We are fishing mainly for points at Hartwell,” he said. And, of course for a top prize of $2,000. The top 15 teams in Saturday's tournament will qualify for the championship at Pickwick.

Anglers will take off from the Gum Branch Park ramp located on Vanna Waller Road in Hartwell at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Schools are allowed to register up until the morning of the tournament. Entries may be made either by phone or at CollegeFishing.com.

Herring Bite Key To Winning Carolinas Bass Challenge Sc Division Tournament On Hartwell

The herring pattern is in full swing on Lake Hartwell so anglers in the Carolinas Bass Challenge South Carolina Division tournament on the lake Saturday should have no problem catching fish,” said CBC Tournament Director Brett Collins.

“Fishing has been great at Hartwell lately, with winning weights coming in well over 20 pounds,” Collins said. “The teams that capitalize on the early morning bite will come out on top this time of year at Hartwell. Big spots and largemouth bass will make up the creel.”

Going into the tournament Wayne Frierson and Ronnie Mueller are leading the SC Division points, just ahead of Chris Marshall and Josh Gardner. Although Marshall and Gardner won the season opener on Lake Murray, Frierson and Mueller have turned in steady performances in all three tournaments to secure the lead, with two top 20 finishes.

“This deep into the schedule a lot of the teams have qualified, but we still expect a good crowd Saturday,” Collins said.

The Carolinas Bass Challenge is experiencing a banner year, he said, with numbers up over previous years and a lot of new teams joining. A big reason is the money involved, with the opportunity for a major payday at every tournament, he added.

“Multiple teams have won over $10,000 and the Skeeter Bonus Dollars the CBC offers on top of the Skeeter Real Money has been a huge addition,” Collins said. “This year we have been paying back the $5,000 at each event in three places – $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000.”

Collins also thanked the fishermen for their support, noting their participation in the tournaments is the key to the success of the CBC.

“We will also send another big number of teams to the Bassmaster Team Championship on Lake Guntersville later this year. Last year we sent 22 teams and it looks to be about the same this year,” he said.

Collins also said he will try to have the 2016 schedule out late this summer so anglers can start making their plans for next year.

Official Press Release For Brent Ehrlers Big Toyota Texas Bass Classic Win On Lake Fork!

With a total weight of 89 pounds, 12 ounces, Brent Ehrler wins the Toyota Texas Bass Classic on Lake Fork.

QUITMAN, TX (May 25, 2015) – On Monday, the 35 angler field was cut to the Tundra 10 for the final day of the 2015 Toyota Texas Bass Classic on Lake Fork.  Over the first two days of competition, Oklahoma’s Jason Christie built a 5 pound lead over his closest competitor, Chris Lane, but seven of the Tundra 10 started the day within 10 pounds of the lead.

Brent Ehrler was one of the anglers within striking distance, entering championship Monday in 5th place with a total weight of 58 pounds, 4 ounces.  Despite averaging over 29 pounds a day for the first two days of competition, the California pro had yet to catch a bass surpassing the 24-inch slot length.

That changed shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Monday, when Ehrler boated a 10 pound, 11 ounce bass to take over the top spot on the leaderboard.  The Lake Fork giant proved to be the Tundra Big Bass of the tournament, earning him a brand new Toyota Tundra valued at $35,000.

The big bass also anchored Ehrler’s final day limit weighing 31 pounds, 8 ounces.  With a three-day total weight of 89 pounds, 12 ounces, Brent Ehrler lifted the 2015 TTBC trophy and added another title to his already impressive résumé that includes a 2006 Forrest Wood Cup victory and four FLW Tour victories.

In his typical calm and cool style, Ehrler said that it was hard to put into words what the TTBC title meant to him.  “I’m still kind of shocked.  I really didn’t think that I had a great chance to win today because I was so far behind,” he explained.  “This win ranks way up there for me. At Media Day on Thursday, they presented Keith Combs with his 2014 championship ring, and I remember thinking, ‘It would be really cool to have a ring like that.’ I never expected that it would actually happen.”

For the duration of the tournament, Ehrler fished offshore with a trio of baits including a Lucky Craft 3.5XD crankbait in shad color, 6-inch hollow bodied swimbait in shad color on a 3/4 oz. BOSS Swimbait Jig Head, and a ¾ oz. BOSS Football Jig Head tipped with a Yamamoto trailer.  He used Daiwa rods and reels spooled with Sunline fluorocarbon for all of his presentations.

He caught the bulk of his weight slow rolling the swimbait, but he also caught several fish that helped on the crankbait and two key fish on the football head jig, including his biggest fish on Sunday and a 6-pounder on Monday.

Ehrler said that the key to his victory was using his Humminbird graph to find the winning school of fish early on the first day of practice. “I saw some fish down there, and on one of my first casts I hooked a 6-pounder.  When I was reeling it in, I noticed a bunch of other big ones following the hooked fish back to the boat,” he explained.  “I immediately knew that I’d found a spot that could be very productive.”

On Monday, he caught a limit weighing 23 pounds off his primary area and then boated the 10-pounder and a 6-pounder off his secondary area in the afternoon. “Both areas that I fished were basically points that extended out into the lake and then dropped off,” he explained.

Along with winning the Toyota Tundra for catching the largest bass of the tournament, Ehrler also took home a check for $150,000.

2nd place finisher Jason Christie didn’t catch his first keeper until 9:30 a.m. on Monday, when he boated a 7 pound, 12 ounce largemouth.  By then, his 5 pound lead had evaporated and he was trailing the on-the-water leader by more than 18 pounds.

Christie rebounded nicely, catching two quality bass in the final hour of competition to nearly pull off the wire-to-wire victory.  He finished with a total weight of 87 pounds, 12 ounces.

With three FLW Tour victories and two Elite Series victories since 2011, the 2015 TTBC title would have capped an impressive five year run for Christie, but he had no regrets with how he fished this week on Lake Fork.

“I felt like this event was going to be won offshore, so I just decided to stick with it,” he explained.  “The area that I fished really doesn’t look that great on the map.  I fished the area last year in the TTBC, so I idled over it during practice this year and I saw a couple fish down there.  That’s where I ended up catching my 10-pounder on Saturday and four of my keepers yesterday.

â€œI fished 12 to 15 places each day, but I had three or four spots where I spent quite a bit of time fishing, and two stops that I considered to be my primary areas,” continued Christie. “I spent most of the tournament fishing the lower third of the lake based on the water clarity.”

Christie fished a myriad of deep diving crankbaits, but caught several of his key fish on a silent Bomber Fat Free Shad BD7.  He also threw a number of different 6- to 7-inch hollow bodied swimbaits, including an out-of-production YUM Money Minnow rigged on a 1 oz. jighead.  He fished with Lew’s baitcasting reels spooled with Sunline fluorocarbon line and Falcon rods.

Tennessee’s Andy Morgan flirted with the lead for the duration of the tournament, but he was never able to garner the big bites that he needed to reach the summit.  Starting the final day in 6th place, Morgan made waves early on Monday morning after boating a 25 pound limit within the first hour of competition.   He was unable to upgrade for the remainder of the day, however, and finished in 3rd place with a total weight of 83 pounds, 12 ounces.

“It seemed like I hit a brick wall once I reached the 25 pound mark,” lamented Morgan, who spent the whole week with a swimbait, crankbait, and big worm on the front deck of his boat.  “Every fish that I ended up weighing-in came on a Zoom Magnum Trick Worm in green pumpkin rigged with a 1/2 oz. weight.”

The reigning FLW Tour Angler Of the Year rotated between four spots this week on Lake Fork.  “I fished a lot of corners and points that actually connected to the bank and were on the edge of timberlines,” he explained.

Alabama’s Chris Lane was the only angler in the Tundra 10 who exclusively fished a shallow water pattern this week on Lake Fork. He finished in 4th place with a total weight of 83-8.  He relied on a heavy black and blue flipping jig and a white Snag Proof frog.

Shad Schenck rounded out the top five with a total weight of 81 pounds, 4 ounces.  The Indiana pro, who qualified for the tournament through the FLW Tour, caught every single fish that he weighed-in off of a single point that featured a small hump with a hard spot.  His fish came on a Buckeye ¾ oz. football jig, magnum finesse worm rigged on a ½ oz. jighead, dropshot, and Carolina-rig.

In total, five of the 35 competitors including Jason Christie, John Crews, Mike Iaconelli, Shad Schenck, and Brent Ehrler, caught a Lake Fork bass surpassing the 24-inch slot length.

Jason Christie won the LEER Heavyweight award for his 37 pound, 4 ounce limit on Saturday.

Due to severe storms and heavy rainfall, the weigh-in venue and activities were closed to the public on Sunday and Monday.

Roselle Relies On Strike King Jig And Rage Craw To Catch Stubborn Bass, Win $6,235 In Bfl On Potomac

MARBURY, Md. (May 18, 2015) – Mike Roselle of La Plata, Maryland, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament of 2015 on Potomac River. For his victory, Roselle earned $6,235.
Mike Roselle of La Plata, Maryland, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to win the Shenandoah Division tournament on Potomac River and a check worth $6,235. (FLW)

“My primary spot was on the north end of the river,” said Roselle. “The area was full of spawning fish and had a lot of scattered grass. There were also postspawn fish that had pulled off the bank and were sitting in anywhere from two to four feet of water.”

Roselle said he used a green-pumpkin-colored Strike King jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw to catch his entire stringer of fish.

“The only time I would get a bite is when I’d break it off from the grass, so I tried to always be in contact with it,” said Roselle. “The creek has a lot of crawfish in it right now so I knew this jig would come up big.”

Roselle went on to say he fished only two spots the entire tournament.

“Once the tide goes out the fish stop feeding. Of the 15 keepers I ended catching, almost all came before noon,” said Roselle.

Clint Brown Wins Rayovac Tourney On Seminole

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (May 23, 2015) – Clint Brown of Bainbridge, Georgia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the Rayovac FLW Series Southeast Division event on Lake Seminole presented by Evinrude with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 52 pounds, 11 ounces. For his victory, Brown earned $40,000.

“The first two days of the tournament I was mainly sight fishing,” said Brown, who earned the win in just his fourth tournament with FLW. “Coming in to this tournament I has around 20 fish marked that I knew were on the beds, and I knew that I would be able to catch them come tournament time. My bait of choice was an Okeechobee-Craw-colored Bruiser Baits Intruder, Texas-rigged with a ¼-ounce weight.”

Brown said that he tried very hard to manage his bed fish throughout the three-day tournament. He caught four on day one, then filled out his limit with a frog. On day two he caught three off of the bed, then again filled his limit with a frog. He said that he was out of fish for the third and final day of competition and was forced to just go fishing.

“Today, I went to an area where I had gotten one bite in practice,” Brown said. “I hadn’t seen any other anglers fishing it throughout the week. I went to the back of a pocket that had a lot of shad and managed to catch eight keepers on a shad-colored Dirty Jigs swimjig.

“I had a decent five-bass limit, but I had two small fish,” Brown continued. “In the last hour of the day I had a hunch to switch things up and I ended up catching my two biggest fish of the day on a chartreuse and white ½-ounce buzzbait. Sometimes you just have to trust your instinct and hope you make the right decision. I did today, and to get the win on my home lake is just awesome.”

Evinrude E-TEC G2 Update with FLW Tour Pro Anthony Gagliardi

FLW Tour Pro Anthony Gagliardi gives us his mid-season Evinrude G2 Update! As you will see and hear, there isn't much to NOT BE IMPRESSED WITH!

Mid-Season Tournament Update with Sportsman's Warehouse and FLW Tour Pro Anthony Gagilardi

Sportsman's Warehouse and FLW Tour Pro Anthony Gagliardi gives us a mid-season update as we head into Memorial Day Weekend

How The Usc Anglers Won The College National Championship On Lake Murray

When the FLW College Fishing National Championship began on Lake Murray April 16, Anthony Gagliardi, who won the Forrest Wood Cup on the lake last August, texted a message to Roger Metz, host of the Woods and Water S.C. radio show in Greenville who was on a spectator boat:

“Tell those guys don't cut it as close as I did.”

The University of South Carolina team of Gettys Brannon of Gaffney, S.C., and Patrick Walters of Summerville, S.C., did not disappoint Gagliardi, who ironically is a graduate of Clemson University, the Gamecocks' bitter rival in most sports competitions.

In the August FLW championship Gagliardi, who lives a few miles from Lake Murray in Prosperity, S.C., beat Scott Canterbury of Springville, Ala., by just 1 ounce. Brannon and Walters won the college national championship over the Liberty University of Lynchburg, Va., team of Travis Rulle and Caleb Eppler, who led the tournament the first two days, by a solid 1 pound, 5 ounces.

The FLW Tour pro's win in August mirrored the USC Anglers' drive to the championship in April. Gagliardi started in 7th place on the first and second days, improved to 3rd on the third day and won it on the fourth and final day. Brannon and Walters started in 6th place the first day, improved to 2nd place on the second day and then won it on the third day. Their win completed the trifecta of bass fishing championships in the past year – Gagliardi's win in the Forrest Wood Cup on Murray in August; Casey Ashley, who hails from Donalds, S.C., won the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell in February; and the USC team claimed the college fishing championship on Lake Murray in April.

Patrick Walters fights a largemouth to the boat. Photo by Pat RobertsonPatrick Walters fights a largemouth to the boat. Photo by Pat RobertsonBrannon and Walters formed a team two years ago when Walters was a freshman and Brannon a sophomore. They are alike in many respects, but often very different in their approach to fishing – a combination that seems to be ideal for team fishing.

“Patrick is a big shallow water fisherman and I like to fish out deep,” Brannon said. “So, instead of having just one option on the boat during a tournament we always have something to fall back on. What we have discovered is that we just click when it's tournament time because we make good decisions together.”

For Walters it is the common drive to succeed that makes them click as a team.

“We want to achieve the same goal. We want to win and we are going to do whatever it takes to win. We know somebody on the boat is up to the job and we talk about everything.”

While both have spent countless hours and days on Lake Murray and felt they knew the lake pretty well, they sought out the advice of local bass fishing guru Doug Lown of Newberry who has chronicled the species and fishing for bass on the lake for many years. The best advice Lown offered, Brannon said, was to keep their minds right.

“He gave us a lot of intel about the fish, but just being mentally prepared and talking with someone who has that much knowledge about the lake definitely gave us an edge,” Brannon said. “But we had a lot of good help around the lake. Getting close to the locals and making good friends of all of them was a good move on our part,”

Following Lown's advice, the Gamecock team concentrated on bass chasing blueback herring, which were beginning to spawn.

“His best advice was on decision making, not where to go,” Brannon said. “We knew the bite was going to turn off each day around 9 o'clock and we had better have a limit by then. We did that and then we went after roaming fish. We knew if we could cull four or five times by the end of the day we would have close to 18 pounds.”

The main lure for Brannon and Walters was a Zoom Fluke to imitate the herring. They also threw a square-billed Lucky Craft and a square-billed Rick Clunn crankbait, plus a Smasher, a Sebille-type bait. When the wind died they drug a Zoom Trick worm on a Carolina rig with a half-ounce bullet weight and the also used a Shakey Head with a Greenfish Crawbait at times. Some of their bigger bass came on a Megabass 110 jerkbait, Brannon said.

“Our game plan was to hit as many points as we could since the herring spawn was starting,” Walters said. “We knew if we could get 17 to 20 pounds a day we'd be right where we wanted to be.”

The USC anglers beamed with confidence throughout the tournament, apparently unconcerned by not being in the lead the first two days. Their main concern was maintaining consistency, Walters said.

“I did not want to be sitting in first place during the tournament. Going into the second day I did not want to be in the top 5 and we were in 6th place,” Walters said. “On the final day we had jumped up to 2nd place so we went out to catch as many fish as we could and try to cull up.”

But the day did not go exactly as planned. The pattern the first two days was to work the fluke early and then go with the Carolina rig once the wind laid. On the final day the wind was not blowing early and they only caught one little 12-inch bass on the first three points they hit with the fluke.

“We were a little worried that we had hit three of our best spots and did not have a fish yet,” Walters said. “We caught a 4-pounder on the Carolina rig and then the wind came up and the fish started coming up schooling. Once they started hitting the fluke we ran as many points as we could.”

They weighed a limit at 17 pounds, 1 ounce, to take the lead and the championship to the cheers of a bipartisan crowd of Gamecock fans, many of whom came out of Carolina Stadium at the conclusion of the USC-Vanderbilt baseball game to watch the weigh-in.

“Everybody who knows me knows I always have something to say,” said Brannon, “but when Forrest Wood gave us the jacket and our bids to the Forrest Wood Cup I could not find the right words to describe it.”

“Being there with all your family and your friends on your home lake is what you dream about,” Walters said. “You could not have written a script any better.”

Thinking Big Is Key To Winning Toyota Texas Bass Classic On Lake Fork

Think Big. That's the key for success in the Toyota Texas Bass Classic this Memorial Day Weekend on Texas' Lake Fork, said FLW Tour Pro Matt Arey. Not just big lures, but big bags, Arey said.

“The water is about 4 feet higher than it was last year when I was here,” Arey said. “The fish are a lot more scattered and I feel like there are a few more up shallow, but I think the tournament will be won out deep.”

Arey said it took almost 50 pounds total the first two days to make the cut for the final day in 2014, but, with the field reduced from 50 anglers in 2014 to just 35 in 2015, it might take another 10 pounds to make the cut.

“I hate to say it, but I think it will take 30 pounds a day. That's what I am fishing for,” he said.

And to get that sized bag each day, he added, anglers will have to wade through the tons of white bass mixed in with the largemouths.

“You have to figure out a bait that you are not going to catch 10,000 white bass on,” he said, “so that means big baits – big spoons, big swim baits, big crankbaits.”

Winner of the Forrest Wood Cup as a co-angler in 2006, the Shelby, N.C. angler made the switch to the front of the boat the following year and has steadily improved his game every year. He is currently ranked 24th on the FLW Tour with two top 15s, including a win on Beaver Lake in April.

Arey owns and operates a guide business (http://www.rackandreeloutfitters.com) on Lakes Wylie and Norman with Bassmaster Elite Pro Andy Montgomery. In the off-season he enjoys bowhunting for whitetails and spending time with his wife Emily and daughter Reese.

The 2015 final field is made up of the top 15 anglers in 2014 Angler of the Year points from both the FLW and Bassmaster Elite Series. Other notable anglers include 2014 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year, Greg Hackney, 2013 recipient and 2014 runner-up Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Aaron Martens, and Andy Morgan, 2014 and 2013 FLW Tour Angler of the Year.

Along with the coveted title of TTBC Champion, the anglers will be battling it out for two additional awards: the Toyota Tundra Big Bass Award and the LEER Heavy Weight Award. The Toyota Tundra Big Bass Award is new to the 2015 event. The angler who catches the single heaviest fish from any of the three days of the competition will win a 2015 Toyota Tundra. The LEER Heavy Weight Award is awarded to the angler with the heaviest total weight of fish from any of the three days of the tournament will win a LEER truck cap.

Southeast Rayovac Points Leader Living His Dream Of Being A Pro Angler

Mark Daniels JrMark Daniels Jr

Mark Daniels Jr. is sitting on top of the points in the Rayovac Series Southeast Division heading into the tournament on Lake Seminole, which starts Thursday, and he was spending Wednesday trying to figure out how to hold onto his slim 2-point lead over Trevor Fitzgerald of Belleview, Fla.

“I've had a really tough practice so far,” Daniels said late Tuesday evening. “I am not familiar with the lake; it's my first time here, so I am trying to figure it all out.”

Daniels, a transplanted Californian now living in Tuskegee, Ala., said the shallow water bite – fishing grass lines, throwing topwater and flipping shallow cover – was not panning out for him “like I would like it to. So, he planned to move deep Wednesday in search of some offshore fish.

Daniels, who won the TBF National Championship in 2013, is now “Living the Dream” of professional bass fishing. That win included the use of a wrapped Chevy Silverado and Ranger Boat, as well as entry fees into the 2014 FLW Tour season.

He finished well down in the standings in 2014, but this year he already has a top 10 finish on the tour and he has two top 10s in Rayovac competition, finishing 4th at Lake Okeechobee in January and 8th at Lake Guntersville in March.

Once he had the opportunity become a pro angler, he jumped at it, leaving his job as a full-time Agriculture Biologist for Soloano County in California and moving to Tuskegee to try to earn a living fishing.

“I am now full-time fishing, living in Tuskegee, Ala., and getting adjusted to doing it full time,” Daniels said. “I was born and raised in the Bay Area and spent my entire life there except for five years going to school in Tuskegee.”

Daniels explained that his older sister, who now lives in Birmingham, graduated from Tuskegee University and convinced him to come there for college – a good choice, he said.

“I was not thinking about going to college at first, but she talked me into coming to Tuskegee. I was interested in environmental science and she just helped me along the way.”

Besides a college degree, which led to a good job, Daniels said he found something else very valuable in Tuskegee – his fiance.

“She lives in Tuskegee and knowing I would be on the road so much, it was just easier for her to have some family support while I was fishing,” he said. “Pro fishing is different, tough at times, being away from family. But it is an absolute dream for me, something I have been striving for as a child.”

Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.

The Rayovac FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship. The 2015 Rayovac FLW Series Championship will be held Oct. 29-31 on the Ohio River in Paducah, Ky.

Univ Of North Alabama Currently #1 In The School Of The Year Challenge

The University of North Alabama Currently Occupies Top Spot in The Cabela's School of the Year Race: Murray State University and Tennessee Tech University Trail Close Behind in 2nd and 3rd Respectively

The BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Presented by Cabela's Adds Double Points to Race

San Antonio, Texas (May 19, 2015) --

Just as quickly as the school year started, it is once again coming to a close with a certain race left on top of the minds of many collegiate anglers. The Cabela's School of the Year Race, the most prestigious title in college fishing, is still in full swing and even more competitive than the start of the season with the University of North Alabama in first, Murray State University in second, and Tennessee Tech University in third.

"It means everything to win this title," stated University of North Alabama (UNA) Junior and Bass Team President, Dawson Lenz. "We've won it last year and we want nothing more than to win it again this year to prove how hard we work and to bring it back home for the school. I'm a junior this year and I want it to become a legacy of winning this title after I leave."

"When we first started taking the Cabela's School of the Year title, it kind of starting as a 'bragging rights' thing, because everyone wants to be the top team of course," said UNA Junior and Bass Team Secretary, Andrew Tate," but this season at our first meeting of the year we talked about the title and everyone wants to win it."

"No question is my mind this is most prestigious and hardest title to win in the sport of college fishing. The Cabela's School of the Year Title is based on performance over a year of events at all levels of college events from school run events to national level events ensures an added twist to next week's BoatUS Collegiate Championship," said Wade Middleton, Director of the Association of Collegiate Anglers and President of CarecoTV.

The UNA Bass team is no stranger to competing with the highest level of intensity. As the 2014 Cabela's School of the Year victors, the UNA Lions look to repeat in their success this year, but the competition has been steep.

"We've had a good year," added Lenz. "We haven't had the best year we've ever had, but it has been very solid. We haven't had that big win yet. We've had some top-tens, but I would love to see our teams get in the top five at the BoatUS Championship next week to help us secure the lead in School of the Year, but this lake is a lake that you can go out and find a giant school and win the tournament in fifteen minutes, just going to show just how good Pickwick Lake truly is," said Lenz.

"Our year has been pretty great so far. We've had a lot of boat problems this year, like last year and it's been tough competition this year, but it's kind of like fuel to the fire. Murray State is a solid team and they have a lot of great fisherman on their team. We've had some boat troubles in the past and Murray state has royally helped us out and we can't thank them enough but hopefully we get to return the favor someday. If there was a chance that UNA didn't win the Cabela's School of the Year title, I would have to believe Murray State would take it home," Tate stated.

While the UNA Bass Team sits on top of the leaderboard, Murray State University had come from behind in true underdog fashion, putting the Racer Bass Team in second place in the Cabela's School of the Year Bass Team. The Murray State team has been on fire about the program and wants nothing more than to be crowned not only the 10th Anniversary BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Champions presented by Cabela's, but the Cabela's School of the Year.

"Our season has gone great, just as we planned it as far as completing our goal of winning the Cabela's School of the Year title," said Murray State University Junior and now Bass Team President, Ryan Kirkpatrick. "The team is really excited on how it has been going and how it's looking for the future."

Kirkpatrick is excited about the race to the title, but he is also pleased with how his team's performance has grown stronger throughout the season.

"As always the competition is stiff throughout each school, but they're challenging us to do better. It's also great to see this year that all of the guys on our team have stepped up and fished many tournaments to give us that extra edge for the School of the Year title."

To the Murray State Racer Bass Team, the Cabela's School of the Year Title is not just another trophy to show to their friends, family and school, but it is much more than that. Kirkpatrick explained the depth of the title and how it not only goes off of one person's hard work, but how hard you work together as a team.

"This is the coveted title," Kirkpatrick added. "Just like in the pros that want to win angler of the year, this title shows that you're the most consistent team in the entire nation. It's something special to say that everywhere you go, you and you're team have been able to catch 'em and it really shows the hard work that your team needs to put in to win the title."

Kirkpatrick and the Murray State Team have high hopes looking forward and expect to gain valuable points next week at the 10th Anniversary BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Presented by Cabela's.

"Our goal is to have two boats in the top fifteen in the BoatUS Championship next week to give us that extra push in the rankings," stated Kirkpatrick. "We fish a lot on Kentucky Lake throughout the year and while each Tennessee River lake is different, they have something that's the same so even though Pickwick Lake is UNA's home lake, it's going to be game on!"

With just over a month left in competition for the prestigious Cabela's School of the Year Title, there are plenty of points to be had including the double points Championship event next week. Rounding out the remaining Top Ten in the Cabela's School of the Year rankings are the following schools:

4. University of Louisiana - Monroe

5. Bethel University

6. Clemson University

7. Mississippi State University

8. University of Tennessee - Chattanooga

9. University of Wisconsin
10. McKendree University

Zippo Signs On As Title Sponsor Of Bassfest

The inaugural BASSfest held last year was a hit with anglers and fans, and the unique competition returns next month with a new title sponsor.

The Zippo BASSfest at Kentucky Lake presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps will be June 3-7 in Paris, Tenn. The B.A.S.S. partnership allows Zippo to align its outdoor brands with the popular Bassmaster Elite Series event as a title sponsor.

“Zippo is extremely proud to sponsor BASSfest on beautiful Kentucky Lake,” said Chris Funk, Zippo marketing product manager - outdoor. “BASSfest’s combination of fishing, family and festival is the perfect opportunity to bring Zippo’s line of outdoor products to people who love being outdoors. “

He added, “Renowned for our lighters, Zippo is taking our 83-year legacy of the flame to the great outdoors. Be sure to check out our new Zippo All-Terrain Grill and sample some delicious food.”

Last season's BASSfest at Chickamauga Lake was a first for the Bassmaster Elite Series. The five-day tournament evolved as an extended opportunity for fans to gather during a weeklong, summertime event. The combination of competition and festival proved a big hit.

“BASSfest is quickly becoming one of the most popular and exciting events of the year in Bassmaster competition, and we are pleased that Zippo has decided to take advantage of that fact by becoming its title sponsor,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “This decision also reinforces the fact that bass fishing fans are avid outdoors people who enjoy camping and cooking outdoors, in addition to fishing.”

This year’s BASSfest follows up with an enhanced fan experience and higher stakes for the pro anglers.

Invited to compete are the Top 10 points leaders from each of the three divisions in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Series presented by Allstate. Also under the new format, Bassmaster Elite Series anglers will earn Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points based on their finishes in the tournament.

Two popular aspects of the original format remain. On Friday, fans have the opportunity to interact with the pros during Bassmaster University, special seminars on a variety of fishing topics. Also on Friday, the Second Chance Tournament returns at nearby Lake Barkley. Each angler below 50th place on Thursday has the chance to advance to the finals on Saturday and Sunday and earn at least $10,000, if they finish in the Top 10 of the second chance round.

Bryan Thift Wins Flw Tour Event On Eufala

EUFAULA, Ala. (May 17, 2015) – The Walmart FLW Tour event at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State promised a dramatic finish Sunday as all of the final top-10 anglers competing on the final day were within striking distance of first place and the title of Lake Eufaula Champion. When the scales settled, it was veteran pro Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, who had caught enough weight to earn the fourth victory of his career.

Thrift’s final-day catch of five bass weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces gave him a four-day total of 69-14 and the win by a 2-pound, 15-ounce margin over day three leader Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia. Thrift beat out 149 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world and claimed the first place prize of $125,000.

“I wanted to win this tournament worse than I have ever wanted to win one in my life,” said Thrift, who pushed his career earnings to more than $1.6 million in FLW competition. “Lake Eufaula is my favorite lake and I absolutely love coming here because it fits well with my style of fishing. I like to run and gun, make three casts, then pull up and go somewhere else. And there are a lot of big fish here. I finished second in the last two major Tour events here so I wanted to win on this lake very badly.

“I fished harder this week than I ever have before,” Thrift continued. “I put 30 hours in three days of practice on my new Evinrude G2 outboard. I sat on my butt for three days just idling and looking and marking – not even fishing. I had around 200 waypoints coming in to this tournament and I was just hoping that I would be able to fish them and come across five good ones each day. The key for me was just covering a lot of water and fishing as much as I possibly could.”

After catching a 7-pounder on day one, a 6½-pounder on day two and two 5-pounders on day three, Thrift seemed to be on the big fish pattern necessary to methodically work his way to the top of the leaderboard. Despite his lack of a kicker on Sunday, Thrift said he still managed to grind out eight keepers on an unnamed swimbait and a frog, to seal the win.

“I figured someone would catch a big limit today and that I didn’t have enough to win,” Thrift said. “I never got that big bite today like I had been all week, but I can’t complain. I’ve had an awesome week.”

Thrift’s win moved him up to second place in the 2015 FLW Tour Angler of the Year race with just two tournaments left. When asked if he thought that anyone could catch leader Wesley Strader, Thrift said that it is going to come down to the last tournament of the year.

“The AOY race is going to go to whoever has had the best year of their entire career,” Thrift said. “Our next stop, Lake Chickamauga, is Wesley’s home lake. Everybody is going to have to hold their ground, because we know Wesley is going to catch them. It’s going to be a super-tight race and going to come down to the last fish weighed in at the last tournament on the Potomac River.”

The top 10 pros finished the tournament:

               1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 69-14, $100,000 + $25,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
               2nd:         Troy Morrow, Eastanollee, Ga., 20 bass, 66-15, $29,789
               3rd:          Clent Davis, Montevallo, Ala., 20 bass, 66-1, $24,822
4th:          Wesley Strader, Spring City, Tenn., 20 bass, 63-1, $19,855
5th:          Jeff Gustafson, Keewatin, Ontario, Canada, 19 bass, 62-15, $18,862
               6th:          Randy Haynes, Counce, Tenn., 20 bass, 60-1, $17,869
               7th:          Shinichi Fukae, Palestine, Texas, 20 bass, 57-12, $16,875
               8th:          Zack Birge, Blanchard, Okla., 20 bass, 57-12, $15,882
               9th:          Adrian Avena, Vineland, N.J., 20 bass, 56-9, $14,889

Morrow Takes Lead At Walmart Flw Tour On Lake Eufaula Presented By Quaker State

Teaser image:

Texas’ Honeycutt Wins Co-Angler Title, $25,000

EUFAULA, Ala. (May 15, 2015) – Pro Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia, caught five bass weighing 18 pounds, 1 ounce Friday to take control of the leaderboard after day two of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State. Morrow’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 39 pounds, 9 ounces gives him a 1-pound, 4-ounce advantage heading into the third day of competition in the nationally televised tournament, hosted by the Eufaula Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, that features 149 anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“The first few keepers I caught today came from the brush piles that I targeted yesterday,” said Morrow, who already has one top-10 finish on Tour this season. “I was stuck around eight pounds for a long time, so I decided to try new areas. In these areas the spots were close together. I found a stretch of brush piles and caught a good one at each. One of the piles did give me three 3-pounders. I could tell they were different from the old ones by the weight of the fish that were coming in. By 9:30 a.m. I had put together a quality limit.

“I picked at the piles and culled through 15 keepers,” continued Morrow. “Once I hit about 18 pounds I saw the storm was coming in and I decided to move up the lake. I’m going to have to re-fish a lot of my spots tomorrow because I crunched so many different piles today. I ended up burning through a little more than I thought I would have to in order to get to this point in the tournament.”

Morrow declined to talk specifics about his baits but did mention he had to make a change around 2 o’clock.

“By that time I had10 or 11 pounds, but knew I needed to switch,” Morrow said. “I wanted to guarantee that I was going to fish on day three. I did end up figuring out what I need to throw, so hopefully it holds up tomorrow. I have about 20 spots left that have good fish in them so that’s where I’ll be targeting.”

Davis Leads Day One Of Walmart Flw Tour On Lake Eufaula Presented By Quaker State

EUFAULA, Ala. (May 14, 2015) – Pro Clent Davis of Montevallo, Alabama, caught five bass weighing 22 pounds, 9 ounces Thursday to grab the lead on day one of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State. Just 1 pound, 1 ounce separates the leader from second-place pro Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia, who caught five bass weighing 21-8 in the nationally televised tournament, hosted by the Eufaula Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, that features 149 anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I hit around 30 to 40 different spots today and caught eight keepers,” said Davis, a former FLW College Fishing standout from the University of Montevallo in Alabama. “Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good. Coming in to the day I thought I would be pretty lucky to catch 12 pounds.

“It’s definitely a numbers game right now,” Davis continued. “I pull up to a spot, make three casts, and if they’re not feeding then I’m heading to my next area. I’ve been fishing here all my life, so I’ve got plenty of spots to hit. I caught one today off of a spot that I had fished six years ago when I was still in college.”

Davis said that it was no real secret what he and the majority of the anglers in the top-10 were doing – targeting suspended fish over brush piles. He used a variety of baits to catch his fish Thursday.

“I was throwing a big swimbait, a big crankbait, a big worm and a big jig,” Davis said. “One fish will want a swimbait and the next fish wants a worm dragging on the bottom. The key seems to be pulling up to the spot at the right time of the day when they are feeding.

“I think that the fish tend to reload here,” Davis went on to say. “I believe that there are more fish heading deeper and they’ll replenish some of the areas that I hit today. I’m just going to go fishing again and we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”

The top 10 pros after day one on Lake Eufaula are:

'ride The Tide' Key For Wolfson Hospital Tournament On St. John's River

The key to winning the 26th annual Wolfson's Children's Hospital Bass Tournament on the St. John's River this Saturday will be to ride the tide, said Vance McCullough, AnglersChannel.com insider and self-described life-long “river rat.”

“Just follow the moving water,” McCullough said. “The direction of the tide matters less than the fact that it is moving.”

And, he noted, “They are catching them a variety of ways right now.”

A good game plan, he said, would be to fish the eel grass with soft plastics like a Senko, a toad or a trick worm on points on the outgoing tide, adding that there should also be a good topwater bite over the eel grass. McCullough said the Strike Cane Rage Toad, the Gambler Cane Toad and the Storm Horny Toad are producing good limits of bass right now.

“We've got a new moon on Sunday so the water is going to move a lot. Once it starts going out on a nearly new moon it is really going to move,” he said. That, he added means numbers of fish will be caught on Saturday.

“Fishing is going to be good and a lot of fish are going to be caught,” McCullough said. “We've had a long, cold spring, but all of a sudden the last three or four days have been in the high 90s here. I think the fish will kick into a post spawn mode, if they have not already.”

Anglers can head north or south out of the Palatka City Docks and expect to catch good numbers of quality bass, he said.

“Both ends are on fire. You just need to stay with the moving tide.”

McCullough said the tournament annually draws more than 450 boats and the goal this year is to top 500 boats.

Billed as the second largest bass tournament in the nation, Wolfson Children's Hospital Bass Tournament has raised more than $2 million for the children's hospital. The Wolfson Children's Hospital Bass Tournament Endowment provides for the educational needs of patients and staff and supports equipment purchases for the hospital.

School Of The Year Title On The Line In Cabela's Collegiate Bass Championship On Pickwick Lake

The Cabelas/BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship on Pickwick Lake next week will be make or break time for college teams vying for the Cabela's School of the Year title.

The 10th anniversary championship, the fourth and final Cabela's Collegiate Bass tournament for the current season, is a double-points tournament, said assistant tournament director Cody Levy.

“The School of the Year is the biggest title you can win in college fishing,” Levy said. “It's basically a title for schools to go for throughout the whole year. It determines who has the best collegiate bass team over, not just one event, but on top of the leader board over many events.”

Levy explained that college fishing organizations can send two teams each and the points earned in a tournament by both teams count. With more than 150 teams entered in the tournament at Pickwick a high finish could vault a team from down in the standings into contention for the title.

“Right now the University of North Alabama is leading the points and they won the title last year, so they are very hungry to win it again,” Levy said. “However, they have some really stiff competition from other schools looking to win the title, too.”

Levy said a major aim of the tournament’s organizers is to “take care of the college anglers and make sure they have everything they need so they feel like there are fishing just like they were in the pros.”

As the longest running college fishing event, the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Presented by Cabela's is celebrating its 10th Anniversary by giving away over $30,000 in cash and prizes throughout the week-long event, in addition to numerous other prizes, products and more, totaling over $120,000.

Anglers will be competing for thousands of dollars in contingency money as well as big payouts all the way down to 26th place, from $5,000 for first place down to $200 cash and a $50 Cabela's gift card for 26th place.

In addition, every team coming to the event will get a $50 travel gift card courtesy of BoatUS as well as a $25 Cabela's gift card for every angler.

As part of the event support, a variety of meals are provided starting Tuesday night during the Yamaha Angler Appreciation Night, a banquet meal on Wednesday night courtesy of BoatUS, breakfast and lunch provided by Sqwincher, and weigh in meals provided by Cabela's and Costa after each day of fishing.

“The anglers are pretty excited to be heading back to Pickwick. Some have experienced it before and they know it is one of the hottest lakes in the country for ledge fishing and for big smallmouth and largemouth bass,” Levy said.

Find The Bluegills, Find The Bass In The Chattanooga Bass Association Tournament On Chickamauga Lake

The bluegills in Chickamauga Lake are in post-spawn and that is a major key for anglers planning to fish the 4th tournament of the year in the Chattanooga Bass Association series, according to tournament director Brad Ferguson.

“The post-spawn pattern for the bluegill is where the bass are right now,” Ferguson said. “They are just making a meal out of bluegills.”

Ferguson said several anglers in a tournament on the lake last weekend had bluegills in their live wells that had been regurgitated by bass they brought to the weigh-in.

“The Chickamauga is in several different phases right now. There is still a little bit of pre-spawn activity, we've got the spawn and post-spawn and we have some fish that have already migrated to the deep water areas. The deep water pattern is not necessarily the greatest right now, but there are still fish to be caught there.”

With all the patterns available and the bluegill pattern red hot right now, fishing should be really good for the tournament Saturday, Ferguson said. The only possible fly in the ointment is the weather, which may not cooperate, he noted.

“We are looking at some strong thunderstorms that are supposed to move through on Saturday, but we will just have to see how that comes out.”

No matter, the weather, he added, there will be some heavy bags of bass brought to the scales Saturday.

“There will be some people who will have fish and there will be some who struggle, but it will take 30 pounds to win the tournament,” Ferguson predicted.

Williams Gets First Top 5 Finish On Havasu!

We got into town on Saturday night so I had a couple days to relax before our official practice started on Tuesday which was really nice after a challenging week in the delta. I got to admit when I first saw how clear this water is it really intimidated me. I mean you could see fish swimming 15-20 feet deep! I was thinking for sure it would be dominated by the deep fishermen but I quickly found out there are some shallow fish in this place. I quickly developed three patterns that would work for me. I could catch them on top around any wood, jig around grass, and spinnerbait or swimbait around rocks. On Day one I started out with my top water and never caught one so after about two hours I picked up the swimbait and I caught a 4 1/2 and a 4 almost back to back so I stuck with that and ended up with a limit that went 16.8 and was in 14th. Day 2 was a struggle we had a huge front rolling thru and those fish quit bittin! I finally got on a few fish deep in the grass flipping a jig and late that evening I finally had one good bite and broke it off. I managed a limit that went 11.4 and dropped to 46th but good enough for the cut. Day 3 was the magic day for me I found some big fish guarding fry and caught me a really good bag on top water and a jig. Had a limit that went 19.8 anchored by two over 5 pounds and moved up to 7th place so I made my first 12 cut pretty exciting! On day 4 I started off slow but was able to go back and flip deep in the grass with a jig and catch another limit that went 15.10 and that helped me move up two more spots to 5th place! So a pretty awesome event for me on a beautiful lake. If you ever get a chance take your family and go visit lake Havasu I can promise you that you will never see a more beautiful lake!

Nominations For Forrest L. Wood Sportsmanship And Community Leadership Award Now Open

MINNEAPOLIS (May 12, 2015) – Nominations for the 2015 Forrest L. Wood Sportsmanship and Community Leadership Award are now being accepted. The annual award recognizes a Walmart FLW Tour professional angler who best displays an overall commitment to sportsmanship and community leadership, on and off the water, by demonstrating ethical behavior, upholding integrity, class, selflessness, conservation efforts and demonstrating kindness to others.

From conservation to community strengthening, FLW cares about the anglers, sponsors and the millions of fans that enjoy its bass fishing tournaments each year. By recognizing the outstanding individuals who set a high standard with their approach on and off the water, FLW hopes to set the tone for tournament fishing and to pass those values on to its anglers, sponsors, fans and host communities.
Eligible candidates must be a registered FLW Tour pro angler. Several criterions will be taken into consideration for the award. Anglers must exhibit profound respect and civility for all competitors, fisheries, tournament staff and fans.  Outstanding individuals will demonstrate an ability to accept victory and defeat with dignity and grace as well as uphold the highest level of humility and integrity. Award winners display the utmost commitment to conservation, community service and volunteerism.
Past winners of the prestigious award include Walmart pro Mark Rose, Jason Christie and Rich Dalbey. During the 2014 season, Dalbey coordinated food drives at every Walmart FLW Tour stop. The drives collected more than 800 pounds of food and generated enough money to pay for more than 3,000 meals in local communities. The drives were so successful that Dalbey continues to host one at all FLW Tour events.
Those interested in nominating a FLW Tour pro angler must submit a nomination form to Allie Gibbs, FLW Community Outreach Manager, no later than Friday, July 24, 2015. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected], faxed to (270) 252-1001 or mailed to FLW at 30 Gamble Lane, Benton, Kentucky, 42025. Self or peer nominations will be accepted. After all forms are completed, an FLW committee will narrow the nominees and unveil the recipient at the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Richard Owen wins BFL on Gaston

BRACEY, Va. (May 11, 2015) – Richard Owen of Chester, Virginia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament of 2015 on Lake Gaston. For his victory, Owen earned $6,830.
Richard Owen of Chester, Va., won the May 9 Piedmont Division event on Lake Gaston with an 18-pound, 3-ounce limit to earn over $7,500. (FLW)

Owen said he sight-fished spawning beds in the backs of main-lake coves in order to catch his winning stringer.

“I was fishing shallow, not too far from the launch ramp around Holly Grove Creek,” said Owen, who earned his first career win after nine previous top-10 finishes in BFL competition. “The bite was strong anywhere shade hit the water, like on the sides of boat docks or around trees. There was also a lot of dead grass from last year that the fish were spawning in.”

Owen said his bait of choice was a wacky-rigged watermelon-colored Zoom Finesse Worm.

“I caught my kicker around 8:30 a.m. At that point I felt pretty good about my strategy of bed fishing,” said Owen. “I stuck with the worm and the bites stayed consistent.”

Owen said he caught around 12 fish throughout the day, from 2 to 5 feet of water.

“I didn’t think I was going to win it by as much weight as I did,” said Owen. “It was one of those surprises I don’t mind having.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Richard Owen, Chester, Va., five bass, 18-3, $4,830 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
2nd:         Brian Calloway, Danville, Va., five bass, 16-8, $2,415
3rd:          Shawn Hammack, Gasburg, Va., five bass, 16-7, $1,609

5th:          Steve Wagner, Raleigh, N.C., five bass, 15-11, $925
5th:          Bryan Welch, Greensboro, N.C., five bass, 15-11, $925

“It was a great day of fishing,” said Baty. “All my spots were firing like I hoped they would.”

Baty said he started his day off fishing hydrilla-covered shallow humps using a nasty shad-colored Spro Fat John 60 crankbait.

“I targeted spots near where the Chattahoochee River and Flint River dump into the main lake, specifically where the humps were five to seven feet deep,” Baty said.

Around noon, Baty said he switched to fishing deep ledges in 20 to 25 feet of water using a nasty shad-colored Spro Little John crankbait. Within the hour, he caught two 5-pounders.

“I caught nine keepers throughout the day but those two big ones put me over the top,” Baty said. “Hopefully I can keep this momentum going into my next BFL tournament.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Matt Baty, Attapulgus, Ga., five bass, 22-15, $3,718 + $1,000 Mercury Bonus

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Aaron Martens Says Fishing Is For The Birds, Wins Elite Series Stop On Lake Havasu

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. – Aaron Martens heard the chuckles from the crowd when he explained the primary pattern he used during the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Havasu presented by Dick Cepek Tires & Wheels.

But as crazy as it sounded, he was serious.

Martens made a short run up the Colorado River each day and fished thick patches of shoreline vegetation where big largemouth bass were feeding on blackbirds. Flipping a bait designed to mimic their prey, he caught enough bass the first three days to enter Sunday’s championship round in fourth place.

Then during the championship round, he caught five bass that weighed 19-5 and took home the $100,000 first-place prize with a four-day total of 68-9.

He used a drop shot rig some during the week, too. But after the final weigh-in, the buzz was about the birds.

“I do that all the time,” Martens said. “I don’t know why people don’t believe me when I say it. The birds fall out of the nest, and the bass eat them. Birds are definitely part of their diet.”

Martens used a 1/2- or 3/4-ounce weight and a 4/0 Heavy Cover Gamakatsu hook rigged with a green pumpkin punch skirt and one of two plastic trailers. His choice of trailer was determined by which weight he was using — a large Rage Craw for the 1/2-ounce rig and a Speed Craw for the 3/4-ounce setup.

He paid special attention to areas where lots of blackbirds were nesting.

“I probably shouldn’t even be talking about it, because I’ve known about it for 25 years,” said Martens, who said several fish spit up black feathers in his livewell during the tournament. “I’ve caught them in California and had them spit up full-grown blackbirds. Birds are definitely part of their diet.

“Maybe it’s such a good pattern because so many people don’t believe it.”

Though the pattern led to a victory, Martens said there were times when it was frustrating to execute.

The thickness of the tules that line the riverbanks, combined with the high winds that blew during much of the tournament, caused him lots of problems with tangles and forced him to change baits frequently. Once he hooked a fish deep in the tules, landing it was an adventure.

The process was aided by a 7-foot, 6-inch extra-heavy flipping stick from the namesake series he helped design for Enigma. He also relied heavily on 30-pound Sunline SX1 braid.

“I had to use a 3/4-ounce weight instead of a 1/2-ounce today because I started pitching way back in the tules,” Martens said. “I would have loved to go even heavier, but I was afraid to. I had five or six bass drop the 3/4-ounce weight today, and I just didn’t think a 1 ounce would work.”

The come-from-behind victory was Martens’ seventh career win with B.A.S.S., and his first since 2012. It was particularly sweet, coming on the heels of his 13th career second-place finish at the Sacramento River last week.

“I told my wife after I got my 13th second that it was time for me to win a tournament,” Martens said. “I came here with 13 seconds and six wins. That math just really doesn’t add up.”

Martens’ jubilation came at the expense of Arizona angler Cliff Pirch.

Pirch entered the final round in first place, leading Texas angler Takahiro Omori by less than a pound. But the areas near the launch site at Lake Havasu State Park where Pirch had done so well all week finally went dry.

“I probably needed to leave and go somewhere else, but I decided against it,” Pirch said. “I made a move (Saturday). I went somewhere else, and Takahiro Omori caught 20 pounds there. Justin Lucas caught 18 pounds there. I decided to stay there today, and it just didn’t work out.”

Pirch finished second with 66-9, followed by Edwin Evers (65-0), Omori (64-9) and Elite Series rookie David Williams (62-14).

After making a big jump on Day 3 to qualify for Sunday’s final Top 12, Lake Havasu City resident Dean Rojas caught just 14-6 Sunday. He finished sixth with 61-7, just ahead of reigning Bassmaster Classic champion Casey Ashley (61-4).

However, Rojas, who has qualified for the final round in the last three of the four Bassmaster Elite Series tournaments this year, currently leads the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race with 365 points (based on cumulative finishes in Elite tournaments), just 10 points of Lucas, winner of the Sacramento Elite, and Martens, who has 332 points.

Pirch Takes Lead On Moving Day At Bassmaster Elite Series On Lake Havasu

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — After two days, the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Havasu presented by Dick Cepek Tires & Wheels has turned into a neck-and-neck battle between two home-state pros with a star-studded cast lurking not too far behind.

Payson, Ariz., angler Cliff Pirch had an impressive catch of 19 pounds, 4 ounces Friday and took the lead with a two-day total of 36-12. John Murray of Phoenix, Ariz., caught 16-1 Friday to land in second, a little more than a pound back, with 35-9.

The anglers, who both have a long list of amateur victories on Lake Havasu, will lead the remaining field of 52 anglers into Saturday, as they brace for the lake’s legendary weekend boat traffic.

“The increased boat traffic may hurt me, I just don’t know,” said Pirch, who finished second in a Bassmaster Open event on Havasu in 2003. “It’s one of those things where you just hope you can make some adjustments and keep on fishing. It was tough out there today.”

Pirch’s biggest competition Friday wasn’t recreational boat traffic, but rather the high volume of Elite Series pros who were crowded into the areas he’s been fishing. He said the increased pressure, combined with several near misses on good fish early, almost caused him to lose focus.

“I cut one off on the first cast, and when I stood up from re-rigging, there were eight guys fishing around me,” Pirch said. “I was on kind of a community hole, and I got my head out of the game a little bit. I had to leave and go do some other stuff. But I finally got some things going, and it went really well after that.”

Pirch said anglers who spent Thursday sight fishing might have run out of fish and filtered into the area he was fishing Friday out of desperation.

“I had three to four times the guys on the areas where I wanted to fish today than what I had yesterday,” he said. “They didn’t have anything today, so the best thing to do is kind of see what other guys are doing.”

Though Pirch didn’t say exactly how he was fishing, he said he’s using a finesse tactic that requires a spinning reel and lighter line than the pros sometimes use on other fisheries where the water isn’t as clear. He lost four of the first five fish that bit Friday, and he’s being forced to handle every fish carefully.

Most of the bass he’s weighed this week have taken several minutes to land – and since B.A.S.S. rules prohibit a landing net, each has been an adventure.

“These are postspawn fish that aren’t really weighing what they should,” Pirch said. “But they’re big-framed fish, and you have to take it easy with them.”

One of the few anglers in the field this week with as much experience on Lake Havasu as Pirch is Murray.

The 50-year-old angler, who said Thursday he has been fishing the lake since 1985, amended that to 1978 Friday, remembering he caught his first-ever tournament bass on Havasu when he was still in high school.

He spent Thursday fishing areas he’s known for years and caught a good bag of 19-8 despite not finding bunches of fish in any one area. He did the same thing Friday and added 16-1 to his total.

Just as he embraced the high winds on Thursday and Friday, he said he’s actually looking forward to the flood of recreational boat traffic Saturday.

“You’ll start hearing the boats fire up about 10 o’clock, and that’s when the fish turn on,” Murray said. “They like the boat traffic. The boats spook the shad and all the other baitfish, and the bass start biting. Until you start hearing the big boats start, it won’t get right.”

Murray said his fish came from random areas Friday, just as they did Thursday. That worries him heading into Day 3.

“It always scares you, because you don’t have one place you can go,” Murray said. “But tomorrow’s Saturday, so I know I’ll be getting a check. Today, I was stressing. Tomorrow, I’ll fish a little more relaxed.”

All of the 52 anglers who qualified for Saturday’s semifinal round will all earn at least $10,000, but only the Top 12 from Saturday’s weigh-in will advance to Sunday’s championship round with a chance to compete for the $100,000 first-place prize.

Behind Pirch and Murray are Edwin Evers (34-8), Matthew Herren (33-0), Brandon Palaniuk (32-14), Chris Lane (32-9) and Randy Howell (32-4).

Pirch, as the leader on the second day of the tournament, will be awarded the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $500.

Saturday’s take-off is scheduled for 6:15 a.m. PT from Lake Havasu State Park, with the weigh-in scheduled back at the park at 3:15 p.m. PT.

Catch Major League Fishing Tomorrow At 3 Pm On Cbs Sports!

TULSA, Okla. – May 7, 2015 – Jack Link’s Major League Fishing on Saturday, May 9, will make its fifth appearance on a major television network when the Championship Round of the Shell Rotella Challenge Cup airs at 3 p.m. ET on CBS Sports. The hour-long episode was filmed in and around Shreveport, Louisiana.

“We’re extremely pleased to again have the opportunity to showcase Major League Fishing on a traditional major network. With every new show we seem to be attracting more viewers, as well as viewers that don’t fall into the ‘fishing fan’ category,” said Major League Fishing General Manager Jim Wilburn.

“Attracting a broader audience has been one of Major League Fishing’s goals all along. Appearing on the CBS Sports helps us achieve that goal.”

Major League Fishing had tremendous success on a recent CBS Sports airing. In February, Major League Fishing’s telecast of the General Tire Summit Cup championship from Waterville, Maine, attracted more than 1.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen, a ratings measurement system that ranks it as one of the top-performing fishing shows in television history.

Major League Fishing is an enterprise developed through a joint effort between Outdoor Channel and two dozen of the world’s best-known bass fishing anglers. Major League Fishing takes viewers inside the boats of the competitors as they battle each other during a six-day event set in various locations across the country. The anglers utilize a demanding format that allows them to weigh all the “scorable bass” they catch. Unlike other competitive fishing events, leaderboards in the boats allow anglers to know their standings at all times.

Produced by Winnercomm Inc. – an award-winning independent sports production company and division of Outdoor Channel, which is part of Outdoor Sportsman Group – Major League Fishing features such renowned anglers as Kevin VanDam, Skeet Reese, Mike Iaconelli and Gary Klein.

“This is the second time this year that Major League Fishing has aired on CBS Sports and we are pleased to be able to further demonstrate the broad appeal of riveting competition found in this unique bass fishing tournament,” said Jim Liberatore, President and CEO, Outdoor Sportsman Group Networks division. “We look forward to continuing to develop innovative programming, such as Jack Link’s Major League Fishing, to entertain the more than 130 million-plus active outdoor adventure participants and armchair observers in the U.S.”

Whereas the CBS Sports finale is a one-hour show, viewers can tune into Outdoor Channel on Saturdays at 2 p.m. ET, Sundays at 4 p.m. ET and Thursdays at 10 a.m. ET to see two-hour episodes of the competition that takes place in the Shreveport region on Jack Link’s Major League Fishing. Outdoor Channel airs each competition in its entirety, including the championship rounds and a tips and techniques episode featuring the finalists. Moreover, Major League Fishing GEICO Selects, the new hour-long series launched this year on Outdoor Channel, features 24 new anglers competing for one of six spots in a corresponding MLF Cup event. The show can be seen Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET, Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET, and Sundays at 7 a.m. ET.

Evers Sacks 20 Pounds, Leads Elites On Havasu

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. – The wind was blowing hard across Lake Havasu before daylight Thursday, and it only got worse throughout the day as it sometimes pushed 30 miles per hour.

But big gusts and even bigger waves weren’t enough to keep the scenic fishery on the California-Arizona border from showing just how far it’s come.

Oklahoma pro Edwin Evers caught five bass that weighed 20 pounds, 7 ounces to take the Day 1 lead in the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Havasu presented by Dick Cepek Tires & Wheels. He was one of 20 anglers to bring at least 16-0 to the scales on a day when many elected to fish close to the launch site instead of making rough journeys along the Colorado River.

Phoenix, Ariz., pro John Murray was second with 19-8. He was followed by Matthew Herren of Ashville, Ala., with 18-9; Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., with 18-3; and Mike Kernan of Wylie, Texas, with 18-2.

“It was a great day, but I wasn’t really doing anything special,” Evers said. “It’s not like I’ve got one area I can go into and find a big school of fish. I’m going to have to fish new water all week, and hopefully find more fish like I caught today. The fish are out there, but it’s going to be a week of adjustments, for sure.”

A 20-pound bag was once considered virtually impossible on Havasu, but anglers raved Thursday about the lake’s metamorphosis. Murray, who has been fishing Havasu for three decades, said he once enjoyed fishing tournaments on the lake because he knew it wouldn’t take much to win.

He said things are different now.

“I’m fishing techniques I don’t normally fish, actually a technique that I used to win a tournament on this lake 23 years ago,” Murray said. “I’ve been fishing this lake since 1985. Back then, it took about 10 pounds to win here. I’m fishing the same spots now and just catching bigger fish.”

Murray said he believes the size of the bass on Havasu began improving when quagga mussels appeared during the early 1990s.

Quaggas are an invasive Ukrainian species that most believe were accidentally introduced into the lake. The mussels often settle in massive colonies that can block water intakes and affect municipal water supplies, causing billions of dollars in damage.

But Murray said the quaggas actually jumpstarted Havasu’s fish growth.

“Quagga mussels kicked the food chain into high gear,” Murray said. “Divers say the crawdads are all over the bottom, and the redear (sunfish) are growing to world-record size now. Before the quaggas showed up, fish this size just weren’t here.”

While some anglers were bothered by the high winds Thursday, others, like Murray, said it actually helped their cause on a lake as clear as Havasu.

“The wind is why they bite,” Murray said. “If we didn’t have the wind today, it would have been a battle – at least for my stuff. I saw the weather forecast, and I geared my tackle for the wind.”

If the forecast is correct and the wind is much lighter for Friday’s second round, Murray said he might have to use some new tricks to further his success. Tharp and other pros said it isn’t likely to have much effect on their tactics either way.

“I really only saw one other angler doing what I’m doing,” said Tharp, who needed the good day after finishing 61st, 84th and 98th in the first three Elite Series events of the season. “I caught my fish early and then spent most of the day running new water, looking for something I could use the rest of the week. I actually got three bites this afternoon and didn’t set the hook.

“I know it does for some, but I honestly don’t believe the wind makes any difference for what I’m doing.”

The tournament will resume with take-off at 6:15 a.m. Friday from Lake Havasu State Park. Weigh-in is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. back at the park, with only the Top 52 anglers advancing to Saturday.

Warriors On The Water Tournament Going Strong, Will Celebrate 10Th Anniversary On Jordan Lake

When Hal Abshire and two other veterans started the Warriors On The Water Bass Tournament 10 years ago it was supposed to be a one-shot event to honor military veterans. After the tournament on North Carolina's Shearon Harris Lake that year, a reporter asked Abshire, “well, Hal, what are you going to do next year?”

Abshire replied: “We are going to make it bigger and better.”

When he told his fellow organizers, they reminded him: “We don't have any money.”

But Abshire said he thought about the line in the movie, Field of Dreams – “If you build it, they will come....” – and figured if they held the tournament, everybody would come again. And they did, and have every year for the first nine years.

The 10th anniversary tournament will be held Friday, May 15, on Jordan Lake. Abshire has made sure it was bigger and better every year amd everything is lining up to make sure the 10th Wounded Warrior Tournament is a truly memorable one.

The celebration of military men and women begins on Tuesday with a special event, Abshire said. “It's something that has never been done before. Nine of our participants, including some of the fishermen and sponsors, will do a tandem parachute jump with the Golden Knights from Fort Bragg. Celebrity jumpers will include bass pro Mark Rogers and Champion race car driver Ronnie Proctor of Proctor Racing. In addition to Rogers, another pro angler, Jeff Coble, also will take a military serviceman fishing on Friday.

On Wednesday three of the volunteer anglers who team with the military fishermen in the tournament will participate in the annual Little Heroes Program. They will take their boats and equipment to some of the Fort Bragg area schools and tell the kids about tournament fishing.

Thursday is VIP Day when the sponsors, volunteers, fishermen and others visit Fort Bragg, Pope Field and Simmons Army Air Field to observe military men and women carrying out their daily jobs and missions.

“On Friday we let the military folks see how the fishermen prepare for their battles,” Abshire said. “There will be 150 boats in the tournament so we will have three flights going out – the red, white and blue flights. Each boat will have one troop on board with the fishermen – from the Army, Navy, Air Force or the Marines. All the services will be out there and there is always a neat little rivalry to see which service wins.”

The Big Bass Award has always been named in memory of a fallen military member, but this year it will be named in honor of Mark Rogers' father, Roger Rogers, a veteran of World War II, who was a B-17 bombardier. It will be called the Roger Rogers award.

“We've got tremendous support from our sponsors,” Abshire said. “Allan Ranson, CEO of Strike King Lures, has always provided lures, hats and other products for our military fishermen. Gary Remensnyder, President of Lew's Limited, is giving a Lew's Rod and Reel to each military fisherman.”

In addition, two-time Bassmaster Classic Champion Hank Parker and his son, Ben Parker, who fishes the FLW Rayovac Series, will film a segment for Parker's television show, Hank Parker Outdoors.

Abshire said the Warriors on the Water Tournament will go on, but without him at the helm.

“I’ve been doing it for 10 years now and I gave my retirement speech. I said I just want to fish next year.”

Warriors on the Water® is a non-profit organization, founded by three combat veterans, as a way in which to show continued appreciation to the men and women who serve today.

Colley, Bain Hope Home-Lake Advantage Helps Them Move Up In Alabama Bass Trail Points On Logan Martin

The Alabama Bass Trail North Division tournament on Logan Martin Lake Saturday is going to be a fun tournament to fish, said ABT angler Kris Colley of Ragland, Ala., a short 10-minute drive from the lake's edge.

“The water is coming up and I think there will be a lot of fish caught. I'm guessing it will take 21-22 pounds to win it and there will be quite a few weights in the 15- to 16-pound range.”

Whoever wins Saturday will probably have a sack of all largemouths, Colley said, although spotted bass likely will dominate the weigh-in.

“There will be mostly spots weighed in and it's not uncommon to catch 3 1/2-pound spots, but I think whoever wins probably will have all largemouths. You can throw a Carolina rig or a Shakey Head off the points and catch all the spots you want, but it will be a matter of finding those 3 1/2- to 4-pound spots to have a chance.”

Some anglers will go up to the headwaters of the lake and some will go down towards the dam, and both should find plenty of fish, he said.

“The way Logan Martin fishes you are liable to catch them anywhere. There are really no certain places better than the others. It's a great fishing lake and the tournament can be won off the bottom end or off the top end of the lake.”

While there are plenty of spotted bass and largemouths holding off the points, Colley said he and teammate Adam Bain of nearby Talladega will fish a largemouth pattern, concentrating on grass and docks. He said most of the bass have spawned, although there may be a few up shallow guarding fry. But, with the water coming up he expects the largemouths to move up with it.

He and Bain hope to improve greatly on the 9 1/2 pounds they weigh in at last year's Logan Martin tournament. They are ranked 10th in the points this year after an up and down year so far. The finished 69th to start the season on Guntersville in February, but rebounded strongly with a 9th place finish on Neely Henry in late March and followed that with 34th place finish on Lewis Smith Lake three weeks ago.

“If we are going to make a move on the points race, I think Logan Martin is the place to do it,” Colley said.

Heavy Bags Expected At Weigh-In For Carolinas Bass Challenge Nc Division Tournament On Lake Hickory

Jeff Coble and David Wright won the NC Division tournament on Jordan in April

When the North Carolina Division of the Carolina Bass Challenge came to Lake Hickory last year the winners weighed in more than 19 pounds for a five-fish limit and tournament director Brett Collins said it probably will take that much or more in the CBC tournament on Hickory Saturday.

“Lately, it's been taking 25 pounds to win night tournaments on Lake Hickory,” Collins said. “If the water is stained, it will help the fishing Saturday. Hickory can be clear and difficult at times, but add some color and the fishing will pick up.”

Collins said some bass may still be bedding, but the majority should be in post-spawn.

“Look for topwater baits to be working, along with flipping the many docks on the lake,” he said.

The popularity of the challenge series on lakes across the Carolinas continues to grow, Collins said, with anglers not only coming from within the Carolinas, but from other states as well, including Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Ohio. Several times in the past two years tournaments have drawn 200 or more boats.

“We had 156 teams on Hickory last year and we look to have the same number or more for Saturday’s tournament.”

A major reason the tournaments are so popular is the payout at every tournament, he noted.

“First place usually takes home $10,000, plus $1,000 goes to Big Fish. We pay back $5,000 total in Skeeter Bonus, with $2,500 to the highest finishing Skeeter/Yamaha owner, $1,500 to the second highest and $1,000 to third highest. Plus there is Skeeter Real Money in play and that's on top of the Skeeter Bonus.”

Collins said the N.C. Division points race is beginning to heat up, with Thomas Hardwick and Tommy Williams leading the points.

“They will be the team to contend with on Hickory,” he said.

Benge wins co-angler title

HENDERSON, N.C. (May 4, 2015) – Chad Poteat of Mount Airy, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds even Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division tournament of 2015 on Kerr Lake. For his victory, Poteat earned $6,244.
Chad Poteat of Mount Airy, N.C., won the North Carolina Division tournament on Kerr Lake with 17 pounds even. He took home over $6,800 for his efforts. (FLW)

Poteat said he flipped the button bushes in the Nutbush Creek area of Kerr Lake, the same pattern he used to win a BFL Shenandoah Division event last month.

“I caught them on a green pumpkin-colored Zoom Brush Hog,” said Poteat. “I was fortunate that the fish were still hanging around the same area.”

Poteat credited a move to a hidden area of the lake, which can only be accessed in certain conditions, as being a key for him.

“There is a bridge that is so close to the water that the lake has to be down to sneak through,” said Poteat. “In order to get back there I took off my windshield, my depth finders, my trolling motor as well as the cap on my motor. It was worth the effort because I caught a 6-pounder flipping the bushes around 10:30 a.m.”

Poteat said that he ended up catching around 14 bass during the tournament.
“I caught two keepers before going under the bridge, but it was the 6-pounder with the Brush Hog that sealed the deal for me,” said Poteat. “I’m truly blessed.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Chad Poteat, Mount Airy, N.C., five bass, 17-0, $4,244 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
2nd:         Marty Warren, Elon, N.C., five bass, 16-12, $2,122

The top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 15-17 Regional Championship on Lake Wateree in Camden, South Carolina. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
