MECHANICSVILLE’S ELROD WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS
Chester’s Deciucis Wins Co-Angler Title
HUDDLESTON, Va. (May 13, 2019) – Boater Bryan Elrod of Mechanicsville, Virginia, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division tournament on Smith Mountain Lake presented by Navionics Saturday with five bass weighing 17 pounds, 1 ounce. For his efforts, Elrod pocketed $3,766.
“I targeted the shad spawn. I’d found multiple areas where the shad were spawning, but only one had fish in it – It was a point up the Roanoke River,” said Elrod, who notched his third career win in BFL competition. “I caught them from rip-rap in about 2 feet of water using a shad-colored [Heddon Zara] Spook. I caught four that I weighed on the Spook and one on a [shad-colored Rebel] Pop-R.
Elrod said he caught about 8 keepers during the tournament, citing the first hour of the day as the most productive.
“We went all over the lake running other stuff. The fish had spawned, and there were some areas with fry-guarders, but those fish were small. I only caught a few of those and they didn’t help me any,” said Elrod. “That area was really the only productive stop.”
Elrod went on to say that his winning limit consisted of four largemouth and one smallmouth.

BURROUGHS WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON LAKE HARTWELL
Greenville’s Carter Grabs Co-Angler Honors
ANDERSON, S.C. (May 13, 2019) – Boater Jason Burroughs of Hodges, South Carolina, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 16 pounds even win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division tournament on Lake Hartwell. For his efforts, Burroughs was awarded $3,572.
“I caught them targeting the blueback herring spawn,” said Burroughs, who earned his third career victory on Lake Hartwell in BFL competition. “It’s the very, very tail end of their spawn. The bite was extremely good in April, but it’s gotten tough. There’s only a few of us trying to do it and its fading fast.”
Burroughs said he focused on shallow red clay points and small pebble rock points, fishing mid-lake from near Andersonville Island to the dam. He estimated that he made 70 stops and that his fish came from less than 3 feet of water.
“I caught the majority of my keepers on a [½-ounce, brown-colored] Buckeye Lures Mop Jig with a [3½-inch, green-pumpkin] Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw trailer,” said Burroughs. “I also caught some on a topwater in the same areas. I’d throw the topwater up over the point first, and if they didn’t hit it, I went with the jig on the bottom.”
Burroughs said his topwater lure of choice was a chrome-colored IMA Little Stick 135 Walking Bait.
“I didn’t catch a ton of fish – only about 13 all day. I think I weighed three on the jig and two on the stick – all largemouth.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

HERRON AND RUTLAND TIE FOR WIN AT T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON LAY LAKE
Co-Angler Title Goes to Anniston’s Corbett
COLUMBIANA, Ala. (May 13, 2019) – Boaters Dusty Herron of Alabaster, Alabama, and Chris Rutland of Wetumpka, Alabama, each caught five bass Saturday weighing 16 pounds even to tie for the win at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Bama Division tournament on Lay Lake. After contingency awards, Rutland earned $3,435, while Herron took home $2,435.
“I changed up my strategy a little bit because of how many boats were around. Everyone was fishing points, so I knew I needed to try something different if I wanted to win,” said Herron, who earned his first win FLW competition. “Basically I found them super shallow in really scattered out grass. I was on the lower end of the lake toward Mitchell Dam. I knew what they were on, so I went around looking for the same kind of stuff. They were definitely spread out – probably 15 different places.”
Herron said he threw a white custom swim-jig with a custom worm trailer of the same color. He caught nine keepers – including two bass over 5 pounds – and culled four times.
Rutland said he fished main-lake grass points on the south end of the lake until around mid-morning, then flipped boat docks the rest of the day, catching approximately 25 keepers in the process.
“I hit a bunch of points – more than 20 – and was targeting fish in 2 to 4 feet of water,” said Rutland, who earned his third career victory in BFL competition – second on Lay Lake. “I weighed three largemouth from the points and then two spotted bass from the docks. They were also on the south end and about halfway back in the creeks.”
Rutland said he used a 5-inch, Alewife-colored Big Bite Baits Dean Rojas Cane Thumper on a Gamakatsu belly weight hook and a green-pumpkin ½-ounce Davis’ Baits Wood Jig with a Big Bite Baits Real Deal Craw trailer of the same color.
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

MANSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON GRAND LAKE-ST. MARY’S PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS
Co-Angler Title Goes to De Graff’s Whitsett
CELINA, Ohio (May 13, 2019) – Boater Scott Manson of Covington, Ohio, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 13 pounds, 4 ounces, to take top honors at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Buckeye Division opener on Grand Lake-St. Mary’s presented by Navionics. For his efforts, Manson netted $4,046.
“I was fishing rocks, boat docks and a little bit of weeds on the south side of the lake, mid-way down the lake,” said Manson, who notched his third win in BFL competition – second on Grand Lake-St. Marys. “I was in a couple of creeks. I had multiple areas, but most of the fish came out of those creeks.”
Manson said he caught six keepers – five of them on a black and blue-colored D&L jig with a Zoom Super Chunk Jr. trailer. The other, which he weighed, came on a Texas-rigged, green-pumpkin Netbait Paca Craw.
“I’d switch back and forth between the two. Working it slowly was the key– just taking my time and hitting everything I could,” said Manson. “It was cold and windy so I knew it would be tough.”
Manson said his equipment included 7-foot, 6-inch medium-heavy Elite Series Black and Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Signature Series Casting rods and Abu Garcia Revo Rocket and Bass Pro Shops Pro qualifier reels.
“I’ve got to mention my Nitro Z21 boat and Mercury outboard motor as well – it’s a very efficient motor, and the Nitro is a great boat to fish out of,” said Manson. “I also need to thank Freedom Outdoors here in Ohio, they get me everything I need to get out there and compete.”

Florida Anglers catches 15 Pound Giant!!
Courtesy of Vance McCullough
Brian Hammett just caught the 2nd-biggest bass in the history of the Florida Trophy Catch program.
His fish weighed 15 pounds, 13 ounces and was 29 inches long, 22 inches around.
The monstrous bass came from Orange Lake, a legendary fish factory in the north-central region of the state. The lake seems to be on a strong rebound over the last couple of years following years of low water.
Might be a good place for that summer road trip.

Kevin VanDam’s other favorite sport
Courtesy of Alan McGuckin - Dynamic Sponsorships
Most people consider Kevin VanDam the greatest professional bass angler of all time. But beyond fishing, and aside from cheering for his home state Detroit Lions each autumn, there’s not another sport on the planet he tracks with as much passion throughout the year as NASCAR®.
We sat down with the highly decorated, class act of a bass pro from Southwest Michigan to learn more about his love of racing. And it became clear VanDam’s constant attention to the sport centered on 3,400 pound cars traveling at 200 mph definitely equals his intense approach to bass fishing.
Q: How did your love of NASCAR begin?
VanDam:Several years ago, CITGO®was a huge sponsor of both pro angling and NASCAR, and I got invited to participate in a “race & fish” promotion with former driver Jeff Burton at Disney in Orlando. I got to drive a car at the Richard Petty Driving School during that event, and after that I started following Jeff Burton, and watching a few races. Then Jeff invited me to be his guest at a race in Richmond – and ever since then, I’ve been totally into it.
Q: You drive about 40,000 miles in your Toyota Tundra each year towing your Nitro Boat. What percentage of the time would you say you’re listening to “NASCAR Radio” on SiriusXM?
VanDam:Oh, I’d say I listen to “NASCAR Radio” about 70% of the time I’m in my Tundra.
Q: You are sponsored by Bass Pro Shops and Toyota, two companies with a generous history of sponsorship in NASCAR. Tell us how that marketing overlap has created some neat experiences for your NASCAR loving self.
VanDam:Oh, it’s been awesome. Through Bass Pro Shops and Toyota I’ve worked with drivers Martin Truex Jr. and Jamie McMurray, and got to know Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and others. I even got to emcee a charity bass tournament Ryan Newman hosted on Lake Norman near Charlotte.
Q: What tracks have you been to?
VanDam:At least seven that I can think of. Talladega, Bristol, Daytona, Richmond, Chicago, Michigan and Texas Motor Speedway.
Q: Lastly, Kevin, what’s the coolest, most memorable experience you’ve ever shared with a well-known driver?
VanDam:There’s two that come to mind. One was fishing with Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Newman on a private lake in Alabama. And the other was taking Johnny Morris, the owner and founder of Bass Pro Shops fishing with Martin Truex in Northern Michigan for big smallmouth. Man, that was an incredible trip!
Auburn University wins MLF College Face-off on Guntersville
Courtesy of MLF
Auburn University, University of Alabama and University of North Alabama competed in the second MLF College Faceoff on May 5. Teams of two college anglers competed on Lake Guntersville during the Phoenix Boats Stage Five Presented by Mercury, and the winning team, Tristan Crowder and Lake Blasingame of UNA, racked up 101 pounds, 13 ounces on the SCORETRACKER LIVE® app.
Auburn University took home the MLF College Faceoff shield because more Auburn teams finished in the Top 10, earning Auburn more points than the other two schools. Auburn’s bass fishing team received their shield at the Bass Pro Tour Postgame Show Presented by Berkley on Championship Sunday.
The next MLF College Faceoff will happen on Bull Shoals Lake during the Berkley Stage Six Presented by TrueTimber. Missouri State University, Drury University, University of Arkansas and Arkansas Tech will compete.

Jim said” We stayed deep most of the day and had a 5 bass limit but we weren’t getting any better in total weight, so we decided to go to shallow water catching several better fish including our 10.12 big fish. That big fish really helped make our 27 pound bag and we were very fortunate to land her. I would like to thank Ranger boats and Chattanooga Fish n Fun for a great boat to fish from”.
Chase McCullough won the Sportsmans Warehouse highest finishing youth division with a 5 bass limit weighing 25.90 pounds
All fish caught in this event were released back into Lake Chickamauga to be caught again and special thanks to the fishermen for taking such extra good care of their catches.
Chattanooga Bass Association President, Jamie Copenhaver, said “Special thanks to Moses Watersports and all our sponsors for their much appreciated support for this 2019 season”.

Mitch Mitchell and Candler McCollum Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Pickwick Lake
by Dan O’Sullivan
May 11, 2019 – Florence, Ala. – Pickwick Lake has been a steady performer whenever the Northern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail make a stop at Florence Alabama’s McFarland Park. Typically, the winning weight at Pickwick will be somewhere between 20 and 25 pounds, and it will take 14 pounds to get a paycheck.
May 11, 2019 was not a typical Pickwick Lake day. The winning weight was much higher, and it took nearly 17 pounds to get the last paycheck spot.
No strangers to the ABT podium, the team of Mitch Mitchell and Candler McCollum produced a stellar 29.04-pound limit of Pickwick Lake largemouth and walked away with their third career ABT victory and the first place prize of $10,000.

The pair said that they felt this event in particular was their best chance to move back into the winner’s circle. “We have been waiting for a tournament at Pickwick that lines up with the fish just moving out to their postspawn haunts, and today was that day,” they said. “We had 40 or 50 small schools of quality fish marked, and hit 20 of them to get out limit; it feels really good to be holding another one of these trophies.”
They reported making the long run to in sight of the Pickwick Dam and fishing offshore current breaks with moving lures. “We caught all of our fish on 6-inch Zoom swimbaits on a jighead and Strike King 10XD crankbaits,” they said. “We only caught about 20 fish, but they were all the right caliber of fish; it was a great day.”

Nolen Spencer and Jonathon Reese finished the day in second place with a limit weighing 26.73 pounds. The former ABT Northern Division winners said that they too made a long run and fished for postspawn fish. “We ran to just past the State Line and caught fish off of three spots within three miles of each other,” they said. “We caught our fish on a variety of lures, but our main ones were 3/4-ounce Mean Mouth Lures Football Jigs and Big Hammer Swimbaits on jigheads. We did all we could, and got beat by a huge bag; we feel good about our day, and possibly took over the lead in the points race, so we’re happy.” The pair earned $5,000 for their performance.

The third place tea of Jake and Michael Gipson produced a limit of 23.44 pounds to finish third and take home to $4,000 payday. Their limit was anchored by a remarkable 10.33-pound Pickwick Lake largemouth that took home the Mountain Dew Big Bass $500 bonus for being the largest bass of the event.
The Northern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail hits the water next at the Neely Henry Lake on June 8.

OLLIVERSON WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON TABLE ROCK LAKE
Missouri pro Earns First Career Victory and earns $38,450
BRANSON, Mo. (May 11, 2019) – ProEric Olliverson of Lampe, Missouri , caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 16 pounds, 8 ounces, to win the three-dayCosta FLW Series on Table Rock Lake presented by Power-Pole. Olliverson’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 46 pounds, 3 ounces, was enough to earn him the victory by a 5-ounce margin over second-place pro Dakota Ebare of Denham Springs, Louisiana, and earn him $38,450.
" src="blob:https://anglerschannel.com/82950a36-bb21-4b97-8ae5-72edeaafa2a0" alt="image004.jpg" width="288" align="right" hspace="12" v:shapes="Picture_x0020_2" class="Apple-web-attachment Singleton" style="opacity: 1;">Olliverson said that he fished two main patterns throughout the week, targeting smallmouth in the morning before flipping for largemouth in bushes in the afternoon.
“Every morning I’d start out fishing for smallmouth and would spend 2 to 5 hours doing that,” said Olliverson, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “Then I’d go flipping in the bushes for largemouth. I’d have done that the whole time, but I just couldn’t get a largemouth bite going early.”
Targeting offshore areas off points on the lower end of the lake, Olliverson caught a limit of smallmouths on Thursday throwing a Keitech Swing Impact FAT 3.3 swimbait on a 6th Sense Divine Swimbait Jighead and a 6th Sense Dogma 115 topwater bait, on which he replaced the back hook with a feathered VMC treble.
From there, he went flipping a beaver-style bait to shallow brush from Kimberling City to the mouth of the rivers, catching a pair of culling largemouths.
Friday was more of the same, but Olliverson noticed his morning smallmouth bite really never got going until after 8 a.m. Saturday, Olliverson only spent an hour on his smallmouths, catching one keeper before heading shallow to flip. Yet, he never got out his flipping rod.
“Before I flipped, I picked up the Dogma topwater and was throwing it around the bushes and a 3-pounder ate it,” Olliverson said. “From there I just kept the topwater in my hand and covered a ton of water.
“I think the key for me this week was trusting my instinct and trusting the Good Lord,” Olliverson went on to say. “It’s weird, but I felt like I was led this entire week. I’d be running down the lake and it was like there was a voice telling me to ‘turn around, that looked good.’ I’ve got a lot of experience here and I was fishing random places that I’d never fished before. And I was catching big ones. It was truly an amazing week.”

Quantum adds Spohrer and Wiggins
TULSA, Okla. – Quantum proudly announces the addition of Gerald Spohrer and Jesse Wiggins to their decorated team of professional anglers.
Spohrer served in the military, and later worked in chemical plants and refineries near his Southern Louisiana home before starting his career as a full time pro. He recorded an impressive (3) Top 10s in just two seasons as a Bassmaster Elite Series pro, and has carried that success into Major League Fishing, where he’s tremendously excited and proud to be competing.
Northern Alabama MLF pro Jesse Wiggins traded a career as a respiratory therapist for a full time angling career that’s yielded $400,000 in prize earnings, and it’s no secret few in the world are more effective than Wiggins with a shaky head worm.
“Everybody knows I love fishing a Shaky Head, and I always throw it with a Quantum Smoke S3 reel because it’s built with a unibody construction, so the gears stay perfectly aligned and smooth. Plus, it’s got an awesome drag for fighting big fish and the size 30 that I use picks up 35” of line with each revolution of the handle,” says Wiggins.
“We selected Gerald and Jesse from the Major League Fishing tour because we identified them as strong upcoming talent in the avid bass fishing space. We feel they are both great additions to the team, and are excited to see what the future holds for Team Quantum,” explains Balay Hartman, Associate Brand Manager for The Zebco Brands

Flood Conditions Force Postponement Of Bassmaster Elite At Fort Gibson, Oklahoma
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — High lake levels at Fort Gibson Lake, Oklahoma, have caused the postponement of the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah Bassmaster Elite tournament — originally scheduled for May 16-19, until September, B.A.S.S. officials announced.
The tournament will be rescheduled during the “Make-Up Week” of September 16-22, which was previously set aside in case a regular-season Elite tournament had to be postponed.
B.A.S.S. officials made the decision to postpone after flood conditions on Fort Gibson forced the closing of launch and weigh-in facilities at Taylors Ferry North Recreation Area in Wagoner.
Heavy rain and flash flooding covered much of northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas the first week of May with some of the heaviest-hit areas within the 11,000 square-mile Grand River Basin, and the outlook heading into the tournament calls for more rainy days. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials told B.A.S.S. that conditions on the lake could be expected to worsen in the coming days.
“We regret having to postpone the Elite tournament but were forced to do so due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO, who noted that the tournament was timed to coincide with the grand opening of the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah next week.
“We can’t be there for the ribbon cutting, but we look forward to returning in September, when our Elite anglers will showcase Fort Gibson Lake’s great bass fishing opportunities,” he said.

MLF Bass Pro Tour Stage 8 to visit Lake Winnebago and nearby waters June 25-30
According to the Appleton Post-Crescent, it looks as though Major League Fishing will announce its final stage, stage 8 of the 2019 season on Lake Winnebago and nearby waters.
According to the article on the postcrescent.com website, as seen below:
NEENAH - Some of the best bass anglers in the world will test their skills on Lake Winnebago and nearby waters next month as the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour makes a stop in Neenah.
The June 25-30 tournament will be live-streamed on the website MajorLeagueFishing.com, and the footage will be packaged into a two-hour TV show that will air later this year on the Discovery Channel and Sportsman Channel.
"It's a huge event for the area," Adam Schanke, sports marketing manager for the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau, told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin. "I think it's going to be a great way to show off Neenah and the Fox Cities as a whole."
The competitive tournament will bring 80 anglers and a production crew of more than 100 people to Neenah.
"It's a perfect time to be there, that time of year," said Michael Mulone, senior director of events and partnerships for Major League Fishing. "The fishing should be phenomenal."
Major League Fishing will build a TV compound with Jumbotrons — something akin to ESPN's College GameDay set — that will be open to the public free of charge during the tournament. The preferred location for the TV compound is the parking lot of Shattuck Middle School, 600 Elm St., but the deal hasn't been finalized.
The tournament is expected to generate more than 1,000 hotel room nights and about $350,000 in direct economic activity.
Schanke said the Fox Cities has been host to fishing tournaments in the past, but not to the level of Major League Fishing.
"This is probably the biggest as far as the prestige of the fishermen," Schanke said. "You can't just sign up for this tournament. These are pros who do this for a living. They are top-level fishermen. They're chosen for this tour."
How it works
The Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour is in its inaugural year. It's a series of catch-and-release tournaments in which the winner is determined by the total weight of his catch. Previous stages were held in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and Oklahoma.
The 80 anglers are competing exclusively with the tour.
"These are the best of the best," Mulone said. "They left other tours to join us this year."
Mulone said the purse for the tournament in Neenah is nearly $500,000, with the winner taking home $100,000.
The competition will occur primarily on Lake Winnebago but will extend to other waters, including Lake Poygan, Lake Winneconne, Lake Butte des Morts and Green Lake.
The anglers will catch largemouth or smallmouth bass. Officials in the boats immediately will weigh the fish, and then the fish will be released back into the water.
Officials will enter the weight into a computer network so all of the competitors and spectators watching the live stream will know the real-time status of the standings.
"If you're on one side of (Lake) Winnebago and catch a 4-pound bass, and I'm on the other side, within a minute I'm going to know that you are now 4 pounds ahead of me," Mulone said. "It creates incredible drama. Even small fish mean a lot because it's total weight per day. It's not catching your biggest five fish, which is traditional with most tournaments."
The schedule
Anglers will arrive June 23 and 24 to practice, and the tournament will run from June 25 to 30.
- Shotgun Round 1 (June 25): 40 anglers in Group A will compete. The total weight of an angler's catch will carry forward.
- Shotgun Round 2 (June 26): 40 anglers in Group B will compete. The total weight of an angler's catch will carry forward.
- Elimination Round 1 (June 27): The 40 anglers in Group A will compete for a second day. The top 20, based on the two-day weight total, will advance.
- Elimination Round 2 (June 28): The 40 anglers in Group B will compete for a second day. The top 20, based on the two-day weight total, will advance.
- Knock Out Round (June 29): The 40 anglers who survived the elimination rounds will compete, starting at zero weight. The 10 anglers with the highest weight will advance to the Championship Round.
- Championship Round (June 30): The top 10 anglers compete, starting at zero weight. The one with the highest weight will lift the trophy and win the $100,000 prize.
Benefits to Neenah
Mulone said he was looking for a different site for the tour and found a perfect match in Neenah and Lake Winnebago, which he described as "a fantastic fishery."
"A professional bass tournament hasn't been to Winnebago in a really long time, if ever before," Mulone said.
Major League Fishing is partnering with Future Neenah on the arrangements, which include equipment rental, portable toilets, fencing and overnight security. The Neenah Parks and Recreation Commission waived the boat trailer parking fees for the event.
The competitors will launch from Recreation Park, 600 S. Park Ave., when fishing on Lake Winnebago, but the focus of activity for the public will be at the TV compound, where spectators can watch the live stream and a daily results show.
Analysts will ask anglers about their performance and what changes they will make for the next day of competition.
Mulone said the TV compound will be visually appealing but won't be so loud as to disturb the peace of the neighborhood. The benefits, he said, are really to Neenah and the surrounding area.
"We're highlighting the destination," Mulone said. "We're going to go around town and find unique places to video, so when we're coming in and out of commercial, there's going to be scenery of Neenah on air. That's a big part of what we do."
Nikki Hessel, executive director of Future Neenah, said the exposure promised by Major League Fishing was too attractive to pass up.
"It's a great opportunity for us to highlight the area and what we have to offer as a community," she said.
Promoters say the economic windfall will be felt long after Major League Fishing moves to the next community.
"People are going to see the best pro fishermen fishing on Winnebago and the surrounding lakes," Mulone said, "and then hopefully they'll want to vacation there."
Redcrest, the season-ending championship for the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour, will be held from Aug. 19 to 25 in La Crosse.
I’ve met some great Americans today.
Vance McCullough - Anglerschannel.com
Patrick Sebile is known by his country of origin – France. “I am a very proud US citizen now for two years,” stated Sebile, his accent still thick, as we talked fishing while tarpon rolled in the marina behind us.
Sebile is here in Marathon, midway between Key Largo and America’s southernmost point in Key West, to introduce his affiliation with A Band of Anglers, his newest venture with Brian Anderson, President & CEO of the multi-brand company that will bring Sebile’s legendary knack for innovation to both, the saltwater, and freshwater fishing worlds.
Sebile stressed that passion is everything. His love of fishing. His love of the United States, Florida being first among the 50 in his mind.

“I choose to live in Florida,” said Sebile. “I’ve fished in 58 countries in my life. I’ve guided in 40 countries. When I discovered Florida in 1992, and fished Florida, I got it in mind ‘Florida is the place I want to live and the place I want to die and the place I want to, and do, raise my kids here.
“It’s a choice. You know, when you’re born in a country, any country, you didn’t choose. Your mom was there so you are. But when you choose, really choose, it is a big choice. I know what I want. There’s a reason for that.”
Sebile is also a part of the borderless community of anglers, hence, his choice to be involved with A Band of Anglers. “A band of anglers is a lifestyle, a band of anglers and friends. It’s the love of fishing that is everything.”
A Band of Anglers and, specifically, Sebile’s fertile mind, has kept their patent attorneys extremely busy. Look for more on their mind-expanding lures as we bring you more from the Florida Keys this week.
American Fishing Wire is aptly named. The makers of Hi Seas fishing line, as well as the wire used for leaders and Alabama rig frames, AFW does everything in Philadelphia, PA. “We extrude our own fluorocarbon in-house,” said Shawn Carpenter, Sales Executive. AFW also pulls all of its wire right here in the USA. They’ve even brought additional jobs to our shore. “We acquired Triple Fish from Germany and started making it right here,” noted Sales Director Steven Miller.
AFW also purchased C&H Lures, a stalwart in the salt community. In fact, AFW owns a great share of the orthodontic wire market. They must adhere to high standards of quality to be in that business.
Engel Coolers was founded in Florida. The company plans to expand its product line while expanding the US economy. The best part is AFW provides high quality, American-made products at reasonable prices. Again, we’ll bring you more about them in the near future.
Mike Dixon spoke of the company’s ambitious plan. “The rotomolded cooler is where the game started. Engel has the design patent. A lot of companies have followed. It gets hard to figure out how to improve that product. What we’re going to do on our next series of rotomolded coolers is one, we want to produce these coolers in the United States. We want some American-made products coming to our customers. So that’s going to be ‘A-number one’.
“The second thing is we really have endeavored to find or create the materials we need to have a fully recyclable rotomolded cooler. Not only the plastic we use in the outer shell, but also the foam we use to insulate – we want to make sure that we use 100% eco-friendly materials and that, ultimately, the product we’re putting out there, when it ever reaches the end of its life, it is fully recyclable and does not end up in the trash.”
It’s good to see the fishing industry doing what it can to Make America Great Again.

Quitting Isn’t the Answer
Team Tournament Blogger - Luke Estel
Last weekend my partner Chopper and I fished the USA Bassin Classic held on Kentucky Lake. Every year we fish that event it seems as if the fish are in transition. There are fish to be caught in the bushes, there are fish to be caught on the shad spawn, and there is a few out on the ledges. It is extremely hard to run one pattern. It is usually better to junk fish for two days and pray for the right bites. In practice we caught a few fish doing targeting all three of those patterns. Our go to spot is our “mega ledge” where we have smashed them in the years past. The day before the tournament we pulled up on it where I took one cast and caught a six pounder. That one fish ended up haunting us in the tournament. Day one, we set out on a shad spawn pattern and where able to catch two small keepers before the bite died. We then took one pass down our ledge without a bite. We were planning on a late ledge bite so we ran to Big Sandy and lost two decent fish flipping bushes. Around noon we headed back to the ledge and camped on it for two and half hours. We never go a bite. We were beyond disappointed with our decision making. Instead of driving home with our tails between our legs, we decided to go for broke and try to catch a monster sack, except we had nowhere to go. I had a small shell bed directly across the lake where we had caught fish in the past so we decided to start there. About my third cast I caught a four. Then Chopper had a good bite and never hooked up. We fished it for about an hour when he asked what else I had close. There was a small rock pile on a drop that I had a waypoint on about two hundred yards from there. We pulled up on it and my first cast, one rocked my football jig. When it jumped I knew it wasn’t a green bass. I finally got him to the boat and flipped the four pound smallmouth into the boat. That would be my biggest smallmouth I have ever caught on Kentucky Lake. Chopper quickly followed me up with two more keeper smallmouth. I was still getting a lot of bites but could not hook up with any more. Chopper switched to a shakey head and a green pumpkin Strike King Cutr worm and went to work. Within minutes he boated another smallmouth pushing four pounds giving us our limit. We both talked about how cool it would be to cull the two smallest ones we had with two more big tanks and it happened. Again Chopper sets the hook and the brown bass would not stay in the water jumping all the way to the boat. Five minutes later he set the hook again on another giant. We both had no clue how much weight we had but knew we were over eighteen pounds. With four cookie cutter smallmouth and one largemouth the only thing we knew was to go look for a couple giants so, of course, we packed up and headed south to our ledge. And just like the day before, we never got a bite. With an hour to go we went back to our smallmouth hole catching two more keeper smallmouth that did not help our bag. At weigh in our fish ended up weighing eighteen and half pounds. It was the biggest bag of smallmouth either of us had, not only caught, but weighed in at a tournament. We moved from 106thplace into 33rdplace. The moral of the story is to never quit. Because when you start giving up in tournaments, you will never become successful. Fishing is fishing. Sure we all want to win, but if you are constantly giving up and quitting before the buzzer sounds, you are in the wrong hobby. That one day will go down as was of the funnest fishing days we have ever had. And we didn’t even cash a check, but is sure was worth going out on day two.

JOPLIN’S MATHERLY WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON STOCKTON LAKE
Cuba’s Fey Takes Co-Angler Division
GREENFIELD, Mo. (May 6, 2019) – Boater Marty Matherly of Joplin, Missouri, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Ozark Division tournament on Stockton LakeSaturday with five bass weighing 14 pounds, 3 ounces. Matherly pocketed $5,279 for his day on the water.
“The night before the tournament, my buddy told me to fish the moment, so I did,” said Matherly, who earned his first win FLW competition. “I told my co-angler I was going to throw a topwater because of the cloud cover and how calm it was, but in Son’s Creek my co-angler immediately caught a 3-pounder flipping. I decided to go with what they were biting. I started flipping bushes and immediately caught fish. They were on the outside edge of the bushes.
“By 9 [a.m.], I think I had three largemouth,” continued Matherly. “I had a feeling that fish were both coming from the spawn and going to spawn, so I moved out 20 yards past the main-lake point outside Son’s Creek, and that’s where I caught a 5-pounder in some bushes.”
Matherly said he used a Texas-rigged, Sooner Run-colored Gene Larew Hoodaddy with a 3/8th-ounce WOO! tungsten weight to catch his initial fish. After hooking one and losing it nearby, he said he went two hours without a bite. After some more time spent in Son’s Creek, he headed back toward the dam to finish out his limit.
“My fifth fish came from 20 feet of clear water at the dam, on a flat with rocks,” said Matherly. “I caught a few small ones at other spots before going to a main-lake point, also by the dam. With about 30 minutes left to fish, I caught a 3-pound largemouth. It was my winning fish.”
Matherly’s final two fish were caught on a ¾-ounce PBJ-colored Omega football-head jig with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Tail Space Monkey.

Cobbs trade horse lessons for horsepower
Alan McGuckin - Dynamic Sponsorships
While South Carolina pro Brandon Cobb was racing to a record setting win at the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest event on Lake Fork, his bride Amy was back home in South Carolina cancelling the equestrian lessons she teaches at Lander University in order to surprise her husband on stage moments after he was awarded the winner’s trophy and keys to a brand new Toyota Tundra.
Cobb’s winning 4-day tournament weight of 114 pounds included an 11 pound 1 ounce giant bass he landed on Day 3 of competition. It was the biggest bass of the event, and in turn, won him the prize 381 horsepower Toyota Tundra.
“Not only did I catch the biggest bass of my life this week, but I also caught the biggest 5-bass limit of my life with 37 pounds 15 ounces. And on top of that, I got a new Toyota. That’s just incredible,” says the always happy-go-lucky Cobb.
“The fact that Toyota supports B.A.S.S. in so many ways, and then gives away a Tundra on top it all for big fish in this tournament tells you all you need to know about how Toyota does for our sport,” says the grateful and humble Clemson grad, who majored in fisheries and wildlife science.
Cobb caught most of massive limits of fish using a Duel Hardcore jerkbait to fool largemouth that were munching on spawning shad. But he and Amy caught one another while they were in college together at Clemson.
She loves horses, like he loves largemouth. And two years into their marriage on a sunny Monday afternoon on the shores of famed Lake Fork, they celebrate their second Bassmaster Elite victory of the season, a 2020 Bassmaster Classic berth, the $100,000 prize, and a new Tundra.
Now that’s definitely worth cancelling a few equestrian lessons, and booking a fast flight to Texas for.

CARBON HILL’S WRIGHT WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON NEELY HENRY LAKE
Suwanee’s Young Takes Co-Angler Division
GADSDEN, Ala. (May 6, 2019) – Boater Scott Wright of Carbon Hill, Alabama, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Choo Choo Division tournament on Neely Henry Lake Saturday with five bass weighing 18 pounds, 14 ounces. Wright earned $3,313 for his day on the water.
“I ran downriver and made a couple of quick stops before heading to an area in Canoe Creek. I’d caught them there with a swimjig in practice,” said Wright, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “I figured the water must’ve dropped some because the grass line I was fishing had scum up on top. I started throwing a frog, and by 8 a.m. I was culling – it was on fire.
“Around 9:30 [a.m.], the frog bite slowed down, so I started throwing a weightless green-pumpkin [Yamamoto Custom Baits] Senko in 5 to 8 feet of water outside the same grass line and caught several more fish. Every fish I weighed, though, ended up coming from the frog.”
Wright said he used a white H2O XPRESS™ Hollow-Body Poppin' Frog to catch his fish.
“I started working my way back to check-in around 1:30 [p.m.], but had one spot I wanted to stop at,” said Wright. “It was a small patch of grass in a pocket about a mile downriver from where we took off, and with 10 mins left to fish, I caught my biggest fish of the day.”
Wright went on to say that it was likely the way he worked his frog that had the biggest impact on his win.
“I think the way I was working did more to help me than the bait itself – I’ve never fished a frog that way,” said Wright. “I’d jerk it once or twice, and then let it sit absolutely for about 10 or 20 seconds. It was a technique I discovered during a pause to grab a bottle of water from my cooler. I never got a bite moving the frog – it had to be sitting dead still.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

GEORGETOWN’S MORRISON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON LAKE CUMBERLAND
Co-Angler Title Goes to Salyersville’s Rudd
SOMERSET, Ky. (May 6, 2019) – Boater Michael Morrison of Georgetown, Kentucky, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 17 pounds, 3 ounces, to take top honors at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament on Lake Cumberland. For his efforts, Morrison netted $4,917.
Morrison said he spent his day fishing approximately 15 different pockets mid-lake down toward the Wolf Creek Dam, about an hour from takeoff.
“The largemouth and smallmouth were still spawning,” said Morrison, who notched his first win in FLW competition. “I used a glide bait as a locator bait. Only some of them would get it, so I added a stinger hook on an inch and a half of braided line. It’s just an extra treble hook that hangs down farther in the water column to help get the fish that missed the lure’s original two hooks.
“I did the modification in practice on Friday and it helped my hookup ratio,” continued Morrison. “On Friday, out of 25 bites, I only caught 10 fish. They were only guarding the nest, they weren’t eating. But on Saturday, I was able to catch 12 keepers from 15 or 20 bites – nine smallmouth and three largemouth.”
Morrison said he opted for a 6¼-inch, Threadfin Shad-colored XPS Bass Pro Shops Boss Glide Swimbait.
“I also added a feather on the back hook to get them to target the hooks more rather than the bait,” said Morrison. “For fish that missed it, I followed up with a [Texas-rigged, Get the Net-colored Cabin Creek Bait Company] Express Bug.”
Morrison said he ended up weighing four smallmouth and one largemouth – three from the glide bait and two from the Express Bug.
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st: Michael Morrison, Georgetown, Ky., five bass, 17-3, $4,917
2nd: Ryan Davidson, Branchland, W. Va., five bass, 15-14, $2,158
3rd: Nick Ratliff, Vine Grove, Ky., five bass, 15-12, $1,407
4th: Matt Stanley, Alexandria, Tenn., five bass, 14-14, $1,164
5th: Adam Wagner, Cookeville, Tenn., five bass, 14-11, $783
6th: Thomas Coomer, Florence, Ky., five bass, 14-7, $718
7th: Ryan Coleman, Utica, Ky., five bass, 14-3, $653

9th: James McPherson, Lexington, Ky., five bass, 8-13, $217
9th: Lucas Devere, Berea, Ky., five bass, 8-13, $217
Jonathan Sydnor of Canmer, Kentucky, caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 4 pounds, 11 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $235.
The tournament was hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission.

CAMPBELL AND KALEN TIE FOR WIN T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON ROUGH RIVER LAKE
Oxford’s Thome Takes Co-Angler Division
FALLS OF ROUGH, Ky. (May 6, 2019) – Boaters Brody Campbell of Oxford, Ohio, and Bryce Kalen of Greenwood, Indiana, each caught five bass Saturday weighing 12 pounds, 3 ounces, to tie for the win at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Hoosier Division opener on Rough River Lake. After contingency awards, Kalen earned $2,328, while Campbell took home $2,128.
“I spent a lot of time bed-fishing, so I went and caught two I had right away – one cast each,” said Campbell, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “I stayed toward the dam because the water was a little bit clearer. I was only focusing on small pockets on the dam side of the lake and would stop once I got to the halfway back of them because of how flooded they were. I ran maybe 10 different pockets all day and caught around 20 keepers.”
Campbell said he caught his fish using a wacky-rigged, green-pumpkin-colored Yamamoto Custom Baits Senko. He preferred a 7-foot, 2-inch St. Croix Mojo Bass Spinning Rod with a Lew’s Speed Spin Mach 2 reel and 10-pound-test PowerPro braided line with a 10-pound-test Seaguar Red Label fluorocarbon leader.
“I threw the Senko weightless around the front and sides of bushes,” said Campbell. “I let it sink and caught a few here and there. It seemed like the biggest ones I caught were out in front of the bushes.”
“I spent all of my time in the North Fork area of the lake and fished two spawning bays side by side,” said Kalen, who also earned his first win in FLW competition. “I targeted shallow water bushes and flat spawning banks. The water had come up 2 feet from practice, so I couldn’t see the spawning fish I’d marked. I had to fish for them only knowing they were there. Fishing the old bank line was key for me.”
Kalen said he caught six keepers, weighing three from a 4-inch green-pumpkin-colored Secret Lures Stupid Tube and two on a Texas-rigged, green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Bug. He used a 7-foot, medium-heavy Powell Max rod and Lew’s Tournament Pro reel with 15-pound-test Seaguar InvisX fluorocarbon line for the tube, and a 7-foot, 6-inch heavy-action Powell Endurance rod with 25-pound-test Seaguar AbrazX fluorocarbon line to flip the Rage Bug.
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st: Bryce Kalen, Greenwood, Ind., five bass, 12-3, $2,328
1st: Brody Campbell, Oxford, Ohio, five bass, 12-3, $2,128

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Buchanan, Tennessee, presented by Evinrude. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.
The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2019 BFL All-American will be held May 30-June 1 at the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland, and is hosted by the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Commissioners of Charles County. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

LAKE HARTWELL TO HOST 2020 BFL ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
37th Annual Grassroots Bass Fishing Championship to be held at Green Pond Landing in Anderson County
ANDERSON, S.C. (May 6, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) announced Monday that the 37th annual T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American will be held on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell in 2020. The tournament, slated for April 30-May 2, showcases the nation’s best weekend anglers and awards the winner a $120,000 cash award and an automatic berth into the FLW Cup, but the Anderson community is the real winner, as the area will benefit from the tournament’s estimated $1 million economic impact.
Although the fishery has never hosted an All-American Championship, Lake Hartwell has played host to numerous major FLW bass-fishing tournaments over the years – including four FLW Tour events, two YETI FLW College Fishing tournaments and 44 BFL qualifying events – and proved to be an able playing ground for competitors as anglers hauled in high numbers of solid limits.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be bringing the 2020 BFL All-American to Lake Hartwell,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW President of Operations. “We’ve had great success hosting tournaments in Anderson in the past and the attendance at our previous events has made bringing our All-American championship there an obvious choice. The bass fishing fans in South Carolina have always been extremely passionate and enthusiastic, and we’re proud to be bringing our championship event to them.”
Anglers and their families as well as staff, sponsors and spectators, will descend upon the Anderson area before, during and after the event. These visitors will stay in local hotels, eating in local restaurants and shopping at local stores. Anderson will also benefit from national publicity, as the All-American will be covered in media outlets across the country as well as in FLW Bass Fishing Magazine and FLWFishing.com. Coverage of the 2020 All-American will also be broadcast to more than 63 million cable, satellite and telecommunications households in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean on the World Fishing Network (WFN). FLW television is also distributed internationally to FLW partner countries, including Canada, China, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and South Africa.
“We are very excited to be able to host the great folks from FLW at Green Pond Landing, Lake Hartwell and Anderson County for the 2020 BFL All American,” said Neil Paul, executive director for Visit Anderson. “FLW has been an integral part of the growth and development of Green Pond and we are excited to have them back. FLW and the participating anglers will be welcomed by a nationally ranked facility and fishery, a community that is very supportive of fishing and a team at Anderson County and Visit Anderson that is dedicated to providing the best tournament experience in the country. This announcement is a huge win for our county.”
The T-H Marine Bass Fishing League features a boater/co-angler format, and anglers compete in four one-day events and one two-day super-tournament to qualify for a regional championship. Six regional championships, along with the BFL Wild Card tournament, each send six boaters and six co-anglers to the All-American. The top boater and co-angler from each of the seven divisions at the 2020 TBF National Championship, along with both members of the second, third and fourth-place teams at the 2020 YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship also qualify, for a total playing field of 55 boaters and 55 co-anglers.
Because BFL competitors are weekend anglers and not pros, the All-American and its lucrative cash awards present a unique opportunity for qualifiers. In addition to the $120,000 top boater award, the winning co-angler will earn $60,000 cash. In addition to the six-figure payday, the top boater will also receive an invitation to compete for bass fishing’s most coveted prize – the FLW Cup.
As the nation's leading provider of affordable, close-to-home weekend tournaments, the BFL is widely credited with opening competitive bass fishing to the masses. It also serves as a steppingstone for anglers who wish to advance to the Costa FLW Series and ultimately the FLW Tour - bass fishing's largest tournament series. Each year the top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each BFL division are eligible for priority entry in to the FLW Series, and All-American champions qualifies to compete on the FLW Tour. The top five pros from each U.S. division of the FLW Series, along with the International division representative at the FLW Cup are eligible to advance to the FLW Tour. Former BFL All-American champions who currently compete on the FLW Tour include Nick LeBrun (2018), Jeremy Lawyer (2016), Curtis Richardson (2015), Kerry Milner (2013) and Troy Morrow (2010).
The complete schedule and rules for the 2020 BFL season will be announced this fall. The full schedule and rules will be posted online at FLWFishing.com.

MICHIGAN’S KOROSTETSKYI WINS DEE ZEE FLW/KBF KAYAK OPEN AT NICKAJACK LAKE PRESENTED BY YAKATTACK
Ukrainian Born Angler Bests Field of 103 Anglers in First Ever FLW/KBF Tournament, Earns $7,500
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 5, 2019) – By just a slim 2-inch margin, 23-year-old Michigan angler Bogdan Korostetskyi, won the inaugural Dee Zee FLW/KBF Kayak Open at Nickajack Lake presented by YakAttack Sunday after catching a two-day total of 174.25 inches of bass. For his win, Korostetskyi earned $5,000 and added a $2,500 Dee Zee gift card for being the highest-finishing angler in the Dee Zee contingency program.
During practice, Korostetskyi, a college student in Michigan who was born in Ukraine, said he struggled to find a consistent bite anywhere but on the bank, but he didn’t want to focus his tournament where he was afraid most of the 103 anglers in the field would be fishing. Eventually, he tracked down a couple of grassy offshore humps.
“That’s pretty much what we fish in Michigan, so I felt right at home,” he said.
On Saturday, Korostetskyi found his fish schooling on his two best spots and caught fish quickly, catching a limit by 7:15. Sunday, he fished the same places, but reversed the order, starting on a hump that took him 48 minutes to reach then finishing on another hump about halfway between the first hump and his launch point.
The bass weren’t schooling Sunday, and Korostetskyi encountered muddier water and a wind direction that had flipped 180 degrees from the day before. He needed time to figure out the best way to hold in the wind and line up for the right casting angle to get them to bite.
“It took me one hour to catch my first keeper,” he said.
His strategy was to fish his primary hump, slide off it to some nearby grassy structure to let the good spot rest, then return to it and catch more. Then he finished on his second spot on the way back.
The best humps were about 8 feet deep, with grass that was about 4 feet tall. Korostetskyi said he caught his fish with a 1/2-ounce Evergreen/Z-Man ChatterBait Jackhammer with a Z-Man DieZel MinnowZ trailer.
“It feels surreal,” Krostetskyi went on to say. “I still don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been going on three hours of sleep.
“I was not expecting that. My goal was just to do my best. It was very stressful. I think I had high expectations, but it just worked out.”
The top 10 kayak anglers on Nickajack Lake finished:
1st: Bogdan Korostetskyi, Livonia, Mich., 174.25 inches
2nd: Ryan Lambert, Chattanooga, Tenn., 172.25 inches
3rd: Jordan Marshall, Maryville, Tenn., 170 inches
4th: Cody Milton, Heber Springs, Ark., 169.75 inches

6th: Cory Dreyer, Randleman, N.C., 166.75 inches
7th: Joshua Howell, Cold Spring, Ky., 166.75 inches
8th: Jody Queen, Rocky Gap, Va., 166.5 inches
9th: Brian Coyne, Hilliard, Ohio, 166 inches
10th: Ron Champion, Richmond Hill, Ga., 164.75 inches

The top 100 finishers are now qualfied to compete in the second event, the Dee Zee FLW/KBF Cup in Hot Springs, Arkansas presented by YakAttack. Of these 100 qualifiers, the top 20 will receive free entry. All other qualifiers pay a $500 entry fee. The Dee Zee FLW/KBF Cup will be held Aug. 8-10, 2019, on a lake to be announced soon in conjunction with the FLW Cup on Lake Hamilton.
KBF was formed in 2009 to offer kayak anglers the opportunity to compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes at premier fisheries around the country. Currently in its seventh season for live events, KBF offers more than 25 professional-level bass-fishing tournaments to kayak anglers. JOHN COX WINS FLW TOUR AT LAKE CHICKAMAUGA
Florida Pro Earns Fourth Career Tour Victory, Wins $100,000
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 5, 2019) – Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, won $100,000 at the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude Sunday with a four-day total of 83 pounds, 9 ounces. The victory was the fourth FLW Tour win of Cox’s career – moving him to a tie at No. 7 for the most Tour wins all-time.
Cox brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 21 pounds even to clinch the victory by a 1-pound, 11-ounce margin over local favorite Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, who brought 20 bass weighing 81-14 to the scale and earned $30,100. Tour rookie Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, who led the tournament coming into the final day, caught a four-day total of 80-5 to finish third and win $25,000.
“I can’t believe that I won,” said Cox, who also took over the points lead in the ultra-competitive Angler of the Year (AOY) race with just one event left in the regular season. “It was so tough today. I ran all over this place and had a decent limit, but not what I needed. I was bouncing around, then right before I had to check in I remembered a stretch of trees that I hadn’t checked.
“It was the last minute, and I really don’t know why it just popped in my head, but it did – go to the trees,” Cox continued. “It was weird because I had forgotten all about this area. When I pulled up and Power-Poled down, I knew before I even threw in there.”
With less than 10 minutes before he had to check-in, Cox boated a pair of 4-pounders from the trees and raced back to the Dayton Boat Dock.
“When I caught the two in the last 10 minutes, I got all worked up,” Cox said. “I was running back, and I just felt something. Tears were coming down. It was overwhelming – I don’t know. I’ve won tournaments before, but I’ve never felt anything like it before. I’m getting chills right now just talking about it. This one was different.”
Cox said he used two main baits throughout the week. He threw a Texas-rigged 6-inch Baby Bass-colored Berkley PowerBait MaxScent The General while sight fishing and a white ½-ounce Dirty Jigs jig with a white Berkley PowerBait MaxScent Meaty Chunk Trailer to cover water.
“The jig setup really came into play when the rain came in,” Cox said. “It was something that I could cover a lot of water with. I really thought the jig was going to be deal today, but I had to completely change gears at the end of the day and go back to the worm.”
With just one tournament remaining in the regular season, Cox now shifts his focus to Lake Champlain in upstate New York. He holds just a slim 1-point lead in the AOY race over Polaris pro David Dudley – a three-time AOY winner who already has an FLW Tour win on Lake Champlain on his resume.
“My two favorite lakes are Lake Chickamauga and Lake Champlain, and to finish the season on those two fisheries is great,” Cox went on to say. “I’ve been going to Lake Champlain since I was 20, and I really want to win there. But, I really, really want to win the AOY title. That would be awesome.”
The top 10 pros on Lake Chickamauga finished:
1st: Berkley pro John Cox, DeBary, Fla., 20 bass, 83-9, $102,700
2nd: Buddy Gross, Chickamauga, Ga., 20 bass, 81-14, $30,100
3rd: Ron Nelson, Berrien Springs, Mich., 20 bass, 80-5, $25,000
4th: Yamamoto Baits pro Matt Greenblatt, Port St. Lucie, Fla., 20 bass, 80-0, $20,000
5th: Polaris pro David Dudley, Lynchburg, Va., 20 bass, 78-9, $19,000
6th: Ramie Colson Jr., Cadiz, Ky., 20 bass, 76-7, $18,000
7th: Alex Davis, Albertville, Ala., 20 bass, 74-12, $17,000
8th: Strike King pro Jared McMillan, Belle Glade, Fla., 20 bass, 74-12, $16,000
9th: David Williams, Maiden, N.C., 20 bass, 69-9, $15,000
10th: Lowrance pro Austin Felix, Eden Prairie, Minn., 20 bass, 66-10, $14,000
Complete results for the entire field can be found at FLWFishing.com.
Overall there were 50 bass weighing 172 pounds, 10 ounces caught by pros Sunday. All 10 of the final-day pros brought a five-bass limit to the scale.
Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude will premiere in 2019. The Emmy-nominated "FLW" television show airs each Saturday night at 7 p.m. EST and is broadcast to more than 63 million cable, satellite and telecommunications households in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean on the World Fishing Network (WFN), the leading entertainment destination and digital resource for anglers throughout North America. FLW television is also distributed internationally to FLW partner countries, including Canada, China, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and South Africa.
The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude was more than $860,000. The tournament was hosted by Fish Dayton and the Rhea Economic Tourism Council. The next event for FLW Tour anglers will be the FLW Tour at Lake Champlain presented by T-H Marine in Plattsburgh, New York, June 27-30. The tournament will be hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.
In FLW Tour competition, the full field of 165 pro anglers competed in the two-day opening round Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advanced to fish on Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continued competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.
Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2019 FLW Cup will be on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 9-11 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

Crews always provides a welcome mat
Alan McGuckin - Dynamic Sponsorships
Consistency has been the mark of 11-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier John Crews’ pro angling career. And that includes his commitment to a pre-launch routine.
The green rag you see laying on the front deck of his Bass Cat is first used to wipe the dew off his boat seats. Then he arranges it in perfect position every morning to be used as a welcome mat for his ride-along judges and marshals to wipe their feet on as they board.
Crews’ ride along judge on Sunday at Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest on Lake Fork was sweet and jovial Amy Wisdom.
She’s a 24-year-old from East Texas who couldn’t help but laugh at the site of Crews’ green welcome mat. She’s been paired with him before and knew it would be there this morning. Especially following three wet and muddy days on Lake Fork.
“Oh yea. The towel is there every time,” she laughed. “I rode with John at the Bassmaster Elite on the Sabine River when he made it to Championship Sunday, and he had the welcome mat waiting for me that morning too.”
Crews says it’s not just any old green rag. “I actually call it “The Charlie Hartley Signature Series Towel” because Charlie is the only angler I know who is so fanatical about keeping his equipment clean, he actually washes his boat in the morning beforehe launches,” laughs Crews.
Not only is Crews’ towel a nice gesture, but also a common sense move by the Virginia pro to maintain resale value on his Bass Cat by avoiding visible wear and dirt stains on the front deck carpet.
This is Amy’s third tournament to ride with the Elite Series pros, and she sees the opportunity as a fast track to learning more about the sport she loves. “I’ve always been a fan, but I’m hoping to start fishing some team tournaments with my dad, so this is a great way to learn a lot really quick,” she says.
She’ll certainly garner great knowledge on everything from how to target bass that are munching on spawning shad, to shallow crankbaits and swimbaits too.
But her first lesson of the day from Crews was one centered on courtesy, and a simple way to keep your boat carpet clean.
TABLE ROCK LAKE TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT
BRANSON, Mo. (April 30, 2019) – Table Rock Lake and the city of Branson are set to host a field of 260 bass anglers May 9-11 for the Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Central Division tournament on Table Rock Lake presented by Power-Pole. The three-day tournament, hosted by Explore Branson, will feature top regional bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize package of up to $92,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the pro division.
“It’s going to be one of those tournaments where everyone has a good time – they’re going to catch a lot of fish,” said FLW Tour pro Jeremy Lawyer of Sarcoxie, Missouri, who finished in third place when the FLW Series visited Table Rock Lake in 2018. “The weights may not be especially heavy because the fish are moving and it’s hard to keep them kind of hemmed up in the Ozarks around the spawn. But as far as everybody catching limits, we’ll see all three species play. It’s just going to be a fun, fun tournament.”
Lawyer went on to say it will be a “full-blown” spawn and postspawn bass event.
“I think you’ll see anglers catch 20 pounds one day, and then 12 the next,” said Lawyer. “I think a lot of the bigger fish have probably already spawned, so they’re going to be in that funk, and you can’t target 20 pounds a day sight-fishing. I think guys are going to find enough fish to really be strong one of the three days and make the cut, but by the last day, they may run out of sight-fish.
“The most productive areas will probably be in the cleanest water down-lake – you’ll be able to see what’s going on so much better,” continued Lawyer. “We’ve been getting some rain, and if the water level gets up and in the bushes, the rivers could really play. As far as the numbers of fish, though, they’re going to be strong throughout the entire lake.”
Lawyer said fans should expect to see a good topwater bite and a wide assortment of lures being thrown. He mentioned Carolina-, shaky-head-, Ned- and split-shot-rigs, as well as football-head jigs as popular choices.
Lawyer went on to say that he expects that an angler who can average 16 to 17 pounds a day (48 to 51 pounds total) should be in a good position to win.
Anglers will take off from Table Rock State Park Marina located at 380 State Park Marina Road in Branson at 6 a.m. CDT each day of competition. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will also be held at the state park beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Bass Pro Shops located at 1 Bass Pro Drive in Branson, and will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Table Rock Lake, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $92,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.
The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

KBF/FLW Nickajack Results Day 1
Vance McCullough
“When the storm came over those mountains, it went from calm to major gusts all at once. I had to fight the wind and hail – ice was hitting my deck. The temperature dropped about 10 degrees,” FLW Kayak Bass Fishing Pro Will Mansfield.

Mansfield is one of 103 anglers competing in the FLW/KBF joint tournament on nearby Nickajack Lake while the Tour pros fish Lake Chickamauga.
Bogdan Korostetskyi of Michigan leads with 92.5 inches on Day 1. He has a 3.5-inch lead over Ohio’s Brian Coyne. From there, the leaderboard is jam packed. 73 anglers caught a limit.
Mansfield, an Army veteran from Florida, is in fine position, “I went from 13thto 6thin the last half-hour when I culled 4 fish. I lost one that would have made a big difference, probably 20 inches, had to be a 6-pounder. I’ll be chasing her again tomorrow.”
One of the cool things about the Catch-Photo-Release format is anglers know where they stand. The FLW Tour pros fishing upstream on Chickamauga didn’t know how well they had done until weigh in concluded. But Mansfield can take pride in knowing what his late day flurry was worth.
However, just like his bassin’ brethren on the upstream lake, Mansfield used modern technology to dissect his water and find his fish. His Garmin 9” Side Scan gave him some clues.
And as do Tour pros, kayakers put in the miles when searching for fish. “I’ve put over 100 miles on Hobie 2019 Outback during practice.” Good thing he has the Mirage Drive to pedal his craft and give his arms a break.
Once he found the right deal Mansfield camped on it. “I might have travelled 3 miles today. I have two main spots that I rotated through.”
Timing is everything. “When they want to eat, they eat. If not, you can slow down and throw a worm if you want, but they’re just not going to open their mouths.”
When they do eat, Mansfield feeds them a specific lure in a specific color. “Any other color, I can’t get them to touch it.”
He’s dialed-in like any successful pro, and there are still five anglers ahead of him on the leaderboard. Mansfield understands that consistency wins in multi-day tournaments and he aims to actually improve tomorrow. “I honestly think I can catch 90 inches if all goes well.”
The experience has been fun. “The Top 10 got on stage at the FLW Tour weigh in show. The Top 3 got to speak. Hopefully, tomorrow I’ll have something to say.”

MICHIGAN’S NELSON MOVES INTO LEAD AT FLW TOUR AT LAKE CHICKAMAUGA
Rookie Seeks First Tour Win, Brings 14-ounce Lead into Final Day
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 4, 2019) – FLW Tour rookie Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, caught four big largemouth late in the day Saturday to anchor his 25-pound, 15-ounce limit and jump to the top of the leaderboard after Day Three of the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude in Dayton, Tennessee. Nelson’s five-bass limit was one of just four brought to the scale Saturday that weighed in excess of 20 pounds, telling when you consider that the lake had pumped out 19, 20+ pound limits in the first two days of competition.
Nelson (15 bass, 65-0) will now bring a 14-ounce lead over second-place angler Yamamoto Baits pro Matt Greenblatt of Port St. Lucie, Florida, (15 bass, 64-2) – who led the tournament after Day Two – into Championship Sunday. Also in striking distance in third place, is Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, (15 bass, 62-9), local favorite Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, (15 bass, 62-2) and Polaris pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia, (15 bass, 60-4).
“I feel honored to be here,” said Nelson, who, although a Tour rookie, has three career tournament wins in Costa FLW Series competition. “I had no idea that I had 25 pounds. I had a real slow day and just stuck with it and stuck with it and it started snowballing real quick at the end of the day.
“I’d been running around like Buddy (Gross), burning gas,” Nelson continued. “I was way down the lake and (FLW cameraman) Jody (White) showed up around 1:30 or 2. I caught a big one and was going to leave, then I caught another big one. So I’m getting ready to leave, then I catch another big one. Then I left and came back up the lake and I caught another big one up here. It was truly a blessing.”
Nelson’s four late-in-the-day largemouth came from similar water, but his last kicker came on a different bait. Nelson declined to mention any specifics, but did say that he was catching fish on “a couple of different baits.”
“I’m excited, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself,” Nelson said. “Yesterday I dropped the ball and only had 14 pounds. I just don’t know what will happen tomorrow. I may go out and catch 12 pounds, or I could catch 35. I’m just going to keep an open mind and work hard all day. I’ll be looking for a big bag tomorrow.”

FLORIDA’S GREENBLATT TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF FLW TOUR AT LAKE CHICKAMAUGA
Day One Leader John Cox Just 8 Ounces Back
DAYTON, Tenn. (May 3, 2019) – Yamamoto Baits pro Matt Greenblatt of Port St. Lucie, Florida, brought a five-bass limit of largemouth to the Dayton Boat Dock scale Friday weighing 19 pounds, 13 ounces, to vault into the lead after Day Two of the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Evinrude in Dayton, Tennessee. Greenblatt’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 43 pounds, 2 ounces gives him a slim 8-ounce advantage heading into Day Three of the four-day competition that features 165 of the world’s best bass-fishing anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.
Berkley pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, who led after Day One, fell to second place, just 8 ounces behind Greenblatt with 42-10. Former FLW Cup champion and three-time Angler of the Year Polaris pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia, is just 15 ounces behind Greenblatt in third place with 42-3. The field is now cut to 30 for Saturday’s competition with only the top 10 anglers advancing to championship Sunday.
“I pretty much did the same exact thing that I did Thursday – same spot, same bait, same everything,” said Greenblatt, a six-year FLW Tour veteran with one career FLW Cup appearance. “I thought I had milked it for everything it was worth yesterday, but it replenished overnight. Hopefully there is two more days of bass in there, but I really don’t know what it has left.”
Greenblatt described his key area as a slope, in 8 to 12 feet of water.
“I don’t know why the fish are setting up there. There really is nothing there,” Greenblatt said. “Thursday I caught the heck out of them, all day long. Today it slowed down a lot – I think because of the pressure and we had a little different conditions. I’m catching fish on three different baits, and there seems to be a lot of bait in the area so hopefully it keeps them where they are.”
Greenblatt declined to name his main two baits, but did divulge that a Yamamoto Senko has also been a key piece of his arsenal this week.
“There is definitely a shallow Senko bite that is developing,” he said. “Wacky-rigged seems to be best, but I’ve got them rigged up four different ways. I’m dyeing the tail a little bit, giving them a little more to see.
“Hopefully tomorrow my area is not all blown out,” Greenblatt went on to say. “I’m going to get everything I can there and see what happens. If it’s not happening by noon I’m going to drop back, punt, and go to the dock pattern.”
