Costa Gives New Life to Recycled Fishing Nets with Expanded Untangled Collection
Costa Del Mar, born on the water over 40 years ago and dedicated to building products with purpose, is announcing its largest expansion of the Untangled™ Collection to date. The expansion marks the brand’s first apparel and accessories made with NetPlus 100% recycled nylon fabric, launching alongside five new eyewear styles. All styles join Costa’s established Untangled lineup and mark the partnership’s first voyage beyond eyewear.
Costa has partnered with Bureo®, makers of NetPlus, to bring the Untangled Collection to life. Since 2018, more than 3.9 metric tons of discarded fishing nets have been repurposed for Costa’s Untangled Collection of eyewear. Together with Bureo, by using NetPlus instead of virgin material, we’ve reduced CO2 emissions by 6 metric tons, saved more than 11,400 liters of fossil fuels, and conserved over 1.47 million liters of water since the partnership began.

The first apparel offerings from the collection arrive in the form of the Untangled Oceans Jacket, Untangled Oceans Convert Cargo, and Untangled Oceans Hat, bringing Costa’s sustainability story to an expanded collection of head-to-toe gear. All are crafted using NetPlus fabric, sourced from the same recycled fishing nets at the heart of the Untangled eyewear collection. Water-repellent and quick-dry construction of the Jacket and Convert Cargo handles coastal conditions while reflective taping enhances visibility in low light when out on the water (available in sizes S-2XL). The Untangled Oceans Hat features a six-panel design featuring a recycled NetPlus visorboard, double-needle topstitching, reflective front and back logos, and a recycled mesh sweatband with recycled taping for comfort through long wear (available one-size).
“The Untangled Collection has always been about finding better ways to build products for the water while helping protect the places that inspire us” said Trevor McGowen, Senior Director, Brand Marketing. “By expanding the collection into apparel for the first time, we’re taking that commitment beyond eyewear. We believe the more people that get out there and experience the water for themselves, the more reason they have to care about protecting it.”
“Innovation is in our DNA, and sustainability has always been at the core of our mission.” Says Kevin Ahearn, Bureo co-founder and CTO. “We forged this alliance with Costa 7+ years ago, driven by a shared commitment to protecting the places we love. This new apparel collection illustrates how our combined effort continues to be a catalyst for change, and further expands the reach of our environmental and social impact. For Bureo, this is not just about making another product, but illustrating to consumers and the industry what is possible when brands commit to doing better. The result is a living example of a product that performs with purpose.”
Five new eyewear styles join the Untangled Collection: San Carlos, Tavi, Mooring, Sunlace and Rizzler. The new frames, born from old nets, feature NetPlus material made with at least 75% post-consumer recycled fishing nets, giving new life to one of the most harmful forms of ocean plastic pollution.
San Carlos, inspired by the legendary Sea of Cortez town of San Carlos, Mexico, is an 8-base frame built for long days on the move, combining performance-driven protection with everyday comfort. The frame features sweat management channels, Hydrolite nose pads and retainer-ready temple tips, while micro side shields with hooding provide added coverage. San Carlos joins Costa’s Hybrid category, a collection of water-ready performance sunglasses and apparel designed to transition seamlessly from outdoor adventures to everyday wear.
Alongside San Carlos in the Hybrid category is Tavi, an oversized square silhouette that provides broad peripheral protection while the 6-base curvature locks in optical alignment on open water. Both frames are equipped with superior clarity through scratch-resistant 580G lenses that are available in seven lens colors that range from low light to bright light.
Mooring and Sunlace bring the Untangled story into timeless, 4-base lenses and modern shapes. Mooring, a round unisex frame, is named for the fixed anchor points at sea that become living ecosystems over time. Attracting marine life and sustaining the ocean around them, Mooring brings that same sense of grounded connection to its design. Sunlace is a women’s frame that embodies strength through softness. Both part of the Lifestyle category, they blend everyday fashion with performance-driven polarized eyewear, featuring 580G glass lenses complete with full UV protection.

Rounding out the launch is Rizzler, the newest addition to Costa’s Next Gen lineup, where high performance and ocean stewardship are built into an extra-small fit frame. Costa’s Bio-Poly lenses have at least 60% bio-circular content and perform with industry-leading clarity and UV protection. The frames are a 6-base square and designed for young anglers who are just getting started, proof that Costa’s commitment to conservation is meant to carry through to the next generation.
Costa’s commitment to protecting the waters we depend on extends well beyond the Untangled Collection. From finding more responsible ways to build products and reduce environmental impact across our operations and events, to partnering with conservation organizations, pros and ambassadors who work to protect the places they love, Costa continues to put its purpose into action. Today, Costa eyewear, apparel and accessories are trusted by anglers, explorers, conservationists and researchers around the world; people united by a deep connection to the water and a shared responsibility to protect it.
The Untangled Oceans apparel collection is available now, with the expanded Untangled eyewear collection, including San Carlos, Tavi, Mooring, Sunlace and Rizzler, available beginning Tuesday, September 15 on CostaDelMar.com and at select retailers nationwide, starting at $225.
