Points Battle Heating Up Going Into 4Th Greene Boat And Motor Tournament On Lake Norman

Jody Wright and James Dyer after winning the Mar. 5 tournament on Wylie

Heading into the fourth Greene Boat and Motor Team Trail tournament of the season on Lake Norman Saturday, a real battle is shaping up in the points race with just two tournaments left after Lake Norman.

Scott Willis and Chris Marshall are leading the points, but James Dyer and Jody Wright are just seven points back.

“Scott and Chris have been consistent, but Jody and James won both tournaments on Lake Wylie,” said Brett Collins, tournament director.

At the last tournament, March 5 on Lake Wylie, Dyer and Wright brought in 5 bass weighing 16.76 pounds to take first, plus they weighed in a 5.67-pound bass to take 2nd Place Big Fish. They won a total of $1,707.00 but since the Greene Trail is sanctioned under the Stratos 2x Program and they were signed up, Dyer and Wright doubled their winnings and took home a grand total of $3,414.

“Scott and Chris are excellent shallow water fisherman and Jody and James can fish a jig with the best of them,” Collins said. “Jody fished with another partner this past fall and won the Ryan Newman tournament.”

Fishing could be tough on Lake Norman this Saturday, Collins said, because the lake has had a lot of tournament pressure the last few weeks.

“But the last two qualifiers are on Lake Wateree and Lake Hickory so they will be competing on two lakes that will be hot in the summer months,” he noted.

“Some fish may still be on the beds, but not many. Last week it took almost 15 pounds to win an open and the top team was close behind,” Collins said. “Topwater action should be good, but the trick will be to find the largemouths. As tough as it is, I think 15 pounds might be the magic mark for Saturday.”

Collins said the series is up to 58 teams and on track to match last year’s 83-team membership.

“This year a team only has to enter four of the six qualifiers and can use a sub for one of the four,” Collins said. “We look to have 40 to 50 teams eligible to enter the two-day Championship on Lake Norman Oct 8-9.”

Anglers can also double their chances Saturday if they enter the Carolina Anglers Team Trail tournament out of Pinnacle Landing on Lake Norman, said Collins who directs the CATT trails.

“If you do enter CATT you will be eligible to enter the 2011 CATT Classic on Lake Wylie May 14-15. First place at the CATT Classic will be between $7,000 and $10,000, depending on the number of teams entering.”
