More Reason Than Bass For Volunteers Behind Wolfson Children’s Hospital Tournament
Although he holds the record for the second biggest bass ever caught in the history of the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Benefit Bass Tournament, Brian Seay admittedly is not much of a bass fisherman. He has a more personal reason for serving as tournament director for the 23rd annual tournament Saturday on the St. John's River.
“My son was in that hospital and he passed away after a couple of years, so I have my own attachment. We spent a lot of time in that hospital in his short life and the care we received was astronomical,” said Seay.
Seay said a strange turn of events highlighted by that big bass led him to become involved as a volunteer with the tournament.
“I am no bass fishing expert, but I went out with a guy who was pretty good and we were fishing in Rodman. He said drop your line there and I did. That fish weighed 11-pounds-plus,” he recalled, adding that it also caused him to catch some grief from his co-workers.
“All of the guys at work live and breathe this stuff and when I told them about it, they said, 'You went out there and did what?' I got a little plaque and I put it in my office. Sometimes I will take it out and show it to those guys,” he said with a chuckle.
“But my drive and my motivation for this tournament is not so much for the bass fishing as it is raising money for those kids,” Seay said. “I consider it a big honor to be involved.”
The tournament began more than two decades ago when the director of the Plant Facilities Department of Baptist Medical Center Downtown in Jacksonville, along with several outside contractors, wanted to play a major role in funding capital improvements and technological advancements for the Children's Hospital. They created the tournament with the goal of making it the largest in the state raising money for kids.
In 2010 the tournament drew 422 boats and last year the count was over 460 boats. Bob McNally, outdoors writer for The Florida Times Union in Jacksonville, calls it the largest single-day bass tournament in Florida.
“Actually,” said Seay, “we don't know of a bigger tournament in the Southeast.”
The tournament is actually three events over three days, starting with 14th annual the Lads and Lassies Tournament Thursday. Entry fee for Thursday competition is $70 a boat with an optional $10 entry for the Big Bass Pot.
Prizes for Lads and Lassies range from $1,000 for first place down to $100 for 10th place, with first Big Bass earning $1,000 and second Big Bass worth $500.
The VIP Tournament on Friday is strictly for show to allow sponsors and other dignitaries a chance to get on the water and go fishing.
Entry fee for the 23nd annual Wolfson Children's Hospital Benefit Bass Tournament Saturday is $90 per boat with an additional $10 per boat for the big bass competition. The tournament has a guaranteed purse of $37,000 in cash and prizes, including $10,000 for first place, $4,000 for second and $3,000 for third, on down to $100 for anglers who finish 51st-55th..
There is also a $5,000 prize for the largest bass weighed in and $1,000 each for second and third big bass of the tournament. Bringing in the exact weight listed in a sealed envelope will earn a huge bonus.
The tournament buys an insurance policy and places a pre-determined weight in the envelope. If an angler weighs in the big bass at the exact weight in the envelope he receives an additional $15,000. If the second big bass matches the weight in another envelop that angler gets $10,000.
In addition to all the potential prize money, somebody will go home with a brand new bass boat. Tickets are being sold for a drawing following Saturday's weigh-in for a new fully rigged 2012 Bullet 21XD Bass Boat with a Mercury 225 Pro XS OptiMax Motor, courtesy of Bullet boats and Mercury Marine.
“We raised right at $150,000 last year,” said Seay. “After the tournament we hold a big dinner in Jacksonville for the hospital and present them with the money.”
The volunteers who put on the tournament all have full-time jobs, Seay noted, but they all feel it is worth it just to help the children in the hospital.
“It has been very rewarding to me,” he said. “It's just a huge way to give something back to the hospital.”

Gagliardi Settling On Strategy For Flw Tour Major On Potomac River
With practice over, Anthony Gagliardi was waiting to learn his flight number before determining a set strategy for the first day of fishing Thursday on the Potomac River in the fourth FLW Tour Major of the year.
“I have probably three or four primary ares that I know hold fish. I may decide to fish one for an entire day or I may run up the river and fish back down with the tide,” said the 10-year FLW pro from Prosperity, S.C. “I know there are four possible places I will be fishing in the tournament – I just have to determine which order I will go to them in.”
Gagliardi, the 2006 FLW Tour Angler of the Year, is currently ranked 11th and on track to qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup to be held Aug. 9-12 on Georgia's Lake Lanier. He has made the world championship of bass fishing all 10 years of his career, scoring four top 10 finishes: 3rd in 2004, 5th in 2005, 10th in 2006 and 9th in 2007.
In regular tournaments he has 17 top 10 finishes, including four first places and his career prize winnings top $1.2 million.
Although he did not have a good practice earlier this week, Gagliardi said he has some confidence fishing the Potomac where he has placed in the money in two out of the three tournaments he has fished there. Other than one tournament on the James River some years ago, those three tournaments are his only experience fishing tidal waters for bass.
“I have a little bit of confidence fishing here and I like fishing here,” he said. “It's a great fishery and I usually get a ton of bites when I fish here, but I did not get as many in practice as I normally would.”
Gagliardi said the fish apparently are in several different stages, with some still spawning, some that have spawned and moved out and some that are still on the way up shallow.
“Where I am fishing the water is not clear enough to fish for spawning fish,” he said. “I will fish four different things, but mainly I will be fishing soft plastic. I've had a couple of frog bites to I'll probably fish a frog and I'll go back and forth between those two. I may also throw a swim bait and a Chatterbait.
“If I had to pin it down to just one technique I'd spend most of my time flipping. After that I'd throw the Chatterbait, then the frog and then the swim bait.”

Big Boost In Entries Expected For Angler's Choice Team Trail Tournament At Smith Mountain
Chris Lucas, tournament director for the Anglers Choice Marine Team Trail, is looking for 200 or more boats for Saturday's tournament on Smith Mountain Lake!!
“We had 223 boats in the first tournament (on Smith Mountain), 224 in the second tournament (on Kerr Reservoir) and it dropped to to 167 in the third tournament (also on Kerr), which is typical because we split the state in half. We go to one half three times in the East and stay in the western part three times during the season,” Lucas said.
In order for anglers to get in the four required tournaments, he explained, they go to the first one in the West and the first one in the East and then pick their other three tournaments on waters closest to them.
“Early indications for this tournament look like we are going back to 200 boats again. We had 130 boats pre-registered as of Tuesday morning, so this should be another big tournament. I don't know but some people say we are the second largest amateur trail in the country on average.”
Lucas said there is still plenty of time to register for the tournament. Anglers can register at Anglers Choice in Martinsville, Va., until 12 noon Friday and Lucas will have open registration at the dock from 5 a.m. to about 6:45 a.m. on Saturday.
With half the tournaments already fished, there is a group of teams sitting atop the points standings, but Lucas warned that with three tournaments left the points championship is still anybody's game
“We award 300 points per tournament, so the top guys don't have anything concrete with three tournaments to go. Those guys who are middle ways back could easily have a good day and the top guys could have a bad tournament and then it doesn’t take long to catch up in the points.”
At the midpoint of the season, Travis and Daniel Towe are atop the points standings, but four other teams are close behind. Randy Redden and Gary Payne are second, Ryan and Wayne Mace are third and two teams are tied for fourth: Mark Cooper and Steve Roberts and Tyler and Zach Meadows, both only 42 points behind the leaders.
Lucas said anglers should have no trouble catching fish Saturday about any way they want to fish.
“A lot of the fish have gone to biting at night, but there are still a lot of fish being caught during the day, too. There are reports of some fish still spawning, so there are fish up shallow and some out deeper,” he said.
“There should be a topwater bite early and then anglers can get out and fish the docks and off the points. Some fish will move back on the deep brushpiles, so there will be a variety of ways to catch fish.”
The weather likely will also play a major role, he added. Saturday is supposed to be sunny with temperatures running 79 to 80 degrees.
“But we got hammered Monday night and the night before with rain so the lake will be up and there is a lot of flooding on Smith Mountain Lake right now. There will be colored water in the creeks and tributaries and clear water down the lake, so there will be every possible gamut you will want to fish. It should be a good tournament,” said Lucas who predicted it will take a five-fish limit at 18 to 20 pounds to win Saturday.
An added wrinkle to the tournament Saturday, he added, is the appearance of NAPA Auto Parts. The company will have a big display tent and give away product.

Shootout Anticipated On Wateree In Final Sc Division Carolina Bass Challenge Qualifier
Saturday's final Carolina Bass Challenge South Carolina Division qualifier of 2012 on Lake Wateree is shaping up to be a shootout for the points title which carries a $1,000 cash prize, said CBC director Brett Collins.
“Jason Barrett and Ken Ellis lead Nelson Walker and Chris Brunson by 1 point and Brent Riley and Nathan Burgess are 15 points behind in third, but Saturday is a double points tournament so it's going to be close.”
Barret and Ellis won the opening tournament Feb. 11 on the Cooper River, weighing in a limit at 20.39 pounds, including the Big Fish at 8.63 pounds to win a total of $7,575. They fell to 44th at Lake Murray March 31, finishing out of the money with five fish that weighed 13.54 pounds, but rebounded to ninth at Santee Cooper April 28 when Ellis partnered with Chuck Howard to catch five bass that weighed 21.41 pounds and win $500.
Walker and Brunson have not been spectacular in any of the three qualifiers, but they have been consistent, finishing 18th on the Cooper River, 19th at Lake Murray and 18th at Santee Cooper.
Meanwhile. Burgess and Riley dug a deep hole to start out, finishing 57th on the Cooper River, but have climbed back out with a 10th place finish at Lake Murray and then finishing second at Santee Cooper where they weighed in five fish at 26.71 pounds and took home $4,000.
“The pre-paid list is close to 100,” Collins said at mid-week, “so it looks like we are going to have at least 125 teams for the tournament Saturday at Lake Wateree.”
Fishing at Wateree has been tough recently, Collins said, but the mid-week rains could change that quickly.
“Last week it took only 15 pounds to win a tournament on Lake Wateree, but we expect more weight this week,” he said. “The shad should be spawning in the grass and that will make the topwater bite turn on. With the mild winter and early spring we've had some fish are already out deep and docks always come into play at Lake Wateree.”
Collins said the South Carolina Division is up to 190 teams and he anticipates the number of teams that join up will expand to more than 200 after the tournament Saturday on Lake Wateree.
“It looks like the number of teams that will qualify for the South Carolina Divisional Final on Lake Wateree June 23 will be between 125 and 150,” he said. “First place at the Divisional Final will take home a Skeeter TX190 equipped with a 150 Yamaha HPDI. The point winning teams of each division will receive $1,000.”
Collins said all the teams from the SC Divisional and all the teams who enter the NC Divisional Final will be eligible to enter the Carolina Bass Challenge Championship on Kerr Lake (Buggs Island) October 27. The first place team at the championship will receive a Skeeter ZX200 equipped with a 200 Yamaha SHO.
The Carolinas Bass Challenge is a two-division series promoted by Skeeter Boat dealers Marshall's Marine in Lake City, S.C., Foothills Marine in Morganton, N.C., and Palmetto Marine in Greenville, S.C.

Tough Fishing Means Time To Bear Down For Aoy Auten In Paa Tournament On Old Hickory
Finding fish has been tough in practice on Old Hickory Lake for PAA Angler of the Year Todd Auten, but that might not necessarily be a bad thing.
Auten, who won the third ever PAA AOY title last August on Alabama's Neely Henry Lake, is noted for poor practices followed by good tournaments, as evidenced by his 16th place finish in the FLW Tour Open tournament on Lake Okeechobee in February.
“I had a tough practice, so I had to change up and then I caught some good fish that helped me through the tournament,” he said following practice for the first regular PAA tournament of the year this week on Old Hickory Lake near Nashville, Tenn. After Old Hickory the PAA will move on to Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden, Ala., July 23-28, and will wrap up Sept. 13-15 on the Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla.
“I'm hoping that is going to happen here because Old Hickory has been fishing pretty tough this week,” said the Lake Wylie, S.C., pro angler. “Sometimes when you start bearing down on the fish during the tournament the outcome will surprise you.”
That said, he admitted that finding quality fish during practice this week has not been easy.
“They were biting a little bit, but now everything is getting kind of beat up before the tournament. You can catch fish about anyway you want to fish, but it is just hard getting keepers,” Auten said. “I've caught two quality fish since I've been practicing and they were doing two totally different things.”
Auten said he has located some schools of fish, but they were all small fish.
“I think the fish are mostly still in transition. It's like you can catch fish shallow here and there, but it is spotty. And it is the same for the deep fish,” he said. “There are some deep fish out there, but it is real hard to find a school of them,. You might pull up on a place and catch one but it is hard to find schools with quality fish.”
Auten said the Angler of the Year title has not translated into a sponsorship boon for him.
“Right now sponsors are hard to come by in this economy. You think the economy might be picking up a little bit but a lot of people are still not spending money. It seems like now that you have to look outside the fishing industry for a good sponsorship and if you do that you just about have to know somebody to have a way in with them.”
Auten and his close friend Marcos Malucelli of Fort Mill, S.C., finished 18th in the PAA Tour Team Challenge Jan. 23-28 on Florida's Lake Toho. He is currently ranked 35th in Angler of the Year points.
In FLW competition he is ranked 16th in the FLW Tour Open Division and 40th in the FLW Tour Majors.
“I had a couple of pretty good tournaments and then the last one at Beaver Lake I finished 92nd, my worst finish in a long time. I need to get that turned around and start making some cuts,” he said.
It's time to bear down and fish hard at Old Hickory.

Baldwin Will Leave Turkey Hunting Long Enough To Fish Bfl On High Rock Lake
This is the time of year Chris Baldwin is torn between two loves – bass fishing and turkey hunting.
“I go turkey hunting in the morning and then practice for a tournament in the afternoon,” said the Lexington, N.C., angler who is currently ranked 3rd in the standings for the WalMart BFL's Piedmont Division. “Then I don't find enough fish and run out before the tournament is over,” he added with a laugh.
Not always.
He bagged a nice bird on a combo turkey hunting-practice day before the Lake Gaston tournament in April and then weighed in five bass at 16 pounds, 9 ounces to finish 6th in the tournament.
He spent Wednesday morning in the turkey woods, but did not get a shot.
“We had one out in the field and he was hung up on us. I think a hen got to him, but he should have been a dead bird. We just knew we had him, but then he faded away.,” Baldwin said. “But I can't complain. I've had a pretty good turkey season which was surprising as quick as it warmed up this spring.”
That early spring also affected the fish, he noted.
“Fishing started kind of slow this year. I usually don't start catching them good until they get on the beds and then when they pull off the beds, but March was brutal on me this year.”
Baldwin said there will be a lot of different scenarios for the anglers in the BFL on High Rock this Saturday.
“It has warmed up so quick a lot of the fish have already spawned. Normally, the shallow bite goes to the second week of June on High Rock, but the lake is down by three free. There is usually a good brush bite going on this time of year, but with the water down that brush bite likely is gone.”
There could be a good shad bite, he noted.
“I am sure the shad are spawning after the full moon and it has been real warm the last couple of weeks,” he said. “It's a little early for a crankbait, so a small Carolina rig might be good, along with a jig on the points. I still don't think there will be a 15-foot bite going on. I think it will be from 10 feet up to the bank.”
Baldwin missed practice Wednesday after turkey hunting because of heavy rains, but he will hit the lake Thursday and Friday and try to nail down some areas to fish.
“I'll fish from the bank out, just stand on the trolling motor and see what happens. It won't take very long to figure out if they are on the banks or out deep, but I think they are gong to be everywhere – scattered.”
Then, that just plays into his style of fishing.
“I love junk fishing with at least 12 rods on the deck. I am not a pattern fisherman. Other guys will have two rods on the deck with the same thing on both in case they break one off,” he said. “But I will have everything tied on, from a floating bait to a DD22.”

"It was a crazy day out there. I didn't get many bites but I got the big ones," said an elated Britt Myers. Myers, of Lake Wylie, SC leads the Bassmaster Elite Series stop on Douglas Lake in the foothills of Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains.
Myers weighed-in 24 pounds and an ounce today. Together with his day effort of 21-1, he carries a total of 45-2 and a lead of 3 pounds, 14 ounces over day 1 leader Aaron Martens.
Myers and Martens are not only neighbors on the leader board, but on the water as well - fishing many of the same spots. Martens admitted that Myers got to a couple of the spots first. The weights reflect the result.
Martens "slipped a little" weighing 17-6 today. With a total of 41-4 he is still in great shape heading into day 3 of the 4-day event.
The lake is changing though. Martens noted that he caught more small fish today than yesterday. And he said the offshore schools that anglers have been taking turns on are starting to break up. On day 2 fish had expanded their areas to 10 times the size of their territories from day 1.
Offshore schools are the target this week on Douglas. Getting them to bite is the challenge. Timing is very important. Lure selection seems to play a big role in many cases. For most guys that means a big, deep-diving crankbait. Martens is using the old 'kneel-and-reel' technique popularized by Paul Elias to get that lure down deeper.
Jeremy Starks is 3rd with 39-2. He had a big bag (23-1) and made a big jump today.
Dean Rojas did likewise, with 22-even today. His total stands at 38-7 - good for 4th at the moment.
Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg, SC is 5th with 33-15. He fell off of his day 1 pace with 12-14 today. The same reason Montgomery's weight is down would be the same reason Starks did so well today. They caught the bulk of their better bags from the same spot. Yesterday Starks bailed out early and Montgomery fished the spot later in the day (timing is going to be a big factor). Today Starks got there first and camped on the spot. Who will fish it tomorrow?
This is turning into a most interesting tournament.
The biggest surprise of this tournament season has to be the big weights we are seeing at Douglas. Angler after angler sang praises to the lake.
There is a little topwater bite going. Fred Roumbanis and Steve Kennedy mentioned buzzbaits. Rick Clunn has relied heavily on a Rico popper.
The hook-in-the-hand pattern that worked for Brandon Palaniuk last month seems to have given byron Velvick an edge as well. After letting an estimated 5-pounder stab him with a treble, Velvick had a solid afternoon and brought in the biggest bass of the tourney so far at 6 pounds, 10 ounces.
Also of note - the local trio are fishing well:
Ott Defoe jumped to 7th with 33-11.
Brandon Card moved into 8th with 33-1.
And David Walker delighted the hometown crowd with 16-4 today which, combined with his day 1 weight of 10-1, put him in the cut at 31st place.
"I knew I was fishing the right places the right way," said Walker. "Yesterday I just couldn't make it work out."

Virginia Tech Anglers Qualify For Team-Of-Year Finals Through Ranger Cup University Program
As the highest-finishing Ranger Cup University-qualified team with a total weight of 39 pounds, 9 ounces during the three-day event on South Carolina’s Lake Murray, the duo will receive an expense-paid trip to Texas’ famed Choke Canyon Reservoir later this year where they will compete for over $2,000 in cash and prizes.
Rejzer and Blevins will be matched against the qualified team with the highest place of finish in the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship taking place May 24-25. Both teams will receive an expense-paid, grand-prize package, which includes travel, lodging and meals, as well as the opportunity to compete from fully rigged Ranger boats. The made-for-TV event will be televised nationally on the Americana Outdoors show seen on the NBC Sports network, representing a unique opportunity for the collegiate anglers – complete with over $2,000 in cash and prizes awarded to the winner.
“After three years, I finally made the finals of the national championship, so I’m happy about that. Making the Top 5 was a win in my book,” Rejzer said. “And the realization that this was my last event combined with winning the trip to Choke Canyon through the Ranger Cup University program – it’s just an amazing way to go out.”
Modeled after the most lucrative contingency rewards in the industry, Ranger Cup, Ranger Cup University is the first program of its kind exclusively for collegiate anglers and is open to those fishing in either FLW- or BoatUS-affiliated competitions. Signup is free, regardless of which brand of boat they own. To remain qualified in the program, anglers need only adhere to clothing and logo requirements. And as part of the Ranger Cup University program, participants will be able to receive specially discounted tournament gear through Angler Skins and Gemini Custom Apparel, with no artwork or set-up fees. Through these vendors, Ranger Cup University anglers can purchase fully customized tournament jerseys for as low as $48.

Key Tactic For Elite Series Tournament On Douglas Lake Will Be Offshore And Deep
If the Elite Series anglers competing in the Douglas Lake Challenge, the fourth tournament in the 8-tournament series for 2012, have not already figured it out in practice this week, they probably should heed the advice of a knowledgeable local fishing guide.
In short, Capt. David Berry of Mascot, Tenn., says it's time to break out the deep water tackle and get offshore.
“There are still some fish trying to spawn,” said Berry who grew up fishing Douglas Lake, “but a lot of the bigger fish have already spawned and have pulled back out in the post spawn. They are not quite in the summer pattern, but they are headed that way. Some are suspended and some are out on offshore structure like breaks and drops, stuff like that.”
Berry, who operates his East Tennessee Angling Adventures guide service on Douglas and nearby Cherokee and Norris lakes, said the tournament probably will be won on swim baits, deep-diving crankbaits, maybe a Carolina rig or football jig.
“The lake has not come all the way up so it is not up in the bushes yet. There is not a lot of flipping and pitching going on, so I don't think the tournament will be in the favor of those who fish that way.”
Although Berry no longer fishes tournaments full time, he joined his local BASS Federation club at a young age and fished a dozen or more federation tournaments a year, along with competing in large local tournaments and was active in the old Red Man Tournament Series for a while, earning numerous wins in tournaments across the South.
“I've been guiding here locally for 25 years, doing customized guiding trips,” he said. Berry and his U.S. Coast Guard Certified guides specialize in largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing, crappie fishing and trout fishing and also offer family trips on the lakes and local rivers for bluegills.
While Douglas is not as well known as some of the other lakes in East Tennessee, Berry said, it produces good weights to win tournaments.
“Douglas is known more for producing numbers of fish in the 1- to 2-pound range,” he said. “In the last three weeks it was taking 21 to 23 pounds to win a tournament on Douglas Lake, but the weights have fallen off some lately. I think there will be a lot of tournament fish caught this week, 1- to 3-pounders, and it will probably take 17 pounds or so a day to win.”
But those good fish more than likely will come offshore, he said.
“Actually, there are a lot of good fish to be caught if you know the techniques and how to fish for them. Mainly that is offshore after the spawn. This tournament will line up good with guys who are good with swim baits and crankbaits, and possibly vertical jigs. This will fall right into their laps.”
Berry is sponsored primarily by Johnson Outdoor Products, Skeeter Boats and Lowrance. You can check out his guide service at: www.smokiesangling.com. To contact him, call 865-933-3140 or 865-661-5107, or e-mail: [email protected].
The Elite Series has never stopped at Douglas, a 30,400-acre impoundment formed from the French Broad River and its tributaries of the Nolichucky and Pigeon Rivers, so the fishery will be new for many of the Elite pros. With just three tournaments in the books this year, a number of top pros are stuck far down in the standings, so they will need to win one of the final five tournaments to qualify for the 2013 Bassmaster Classic.
Fans are invited to come out and see how the pros fare in their quest to win $100,000 and an instant-in for the Bassmaster Classic. The daily takeoffs and weigh-ins will be held at The Point Marina, 122 Boatdock Drive, Dandridge, Tenn.
Bush Hawg, a band that performed at the 2012 Bassmaster Classic, will perform after the May 5 weigh-in as part of the free Evan Williams Bourbon Concert Series. All fan activities are free and open to the public.
ESPN2 will present the Douglas Challenge, 8-9 a.m. ET, May 13 on The Bassmasters. The show will air again the same day on ESPN Classic, 10-11 a.m. ET.

Beaver Lake Flw Tour #3
I am back home from fishing the Beaver Lake FLW Tour event and had a really tough time. Beaver Lake is one of those fisheries that I really struggle with. Not only do you have to figure out how to catch a bass in what seems to be a dead sea, but you have to target big, small ones. Let me explain. 99% of th fish at Beaver are below the size of a normal bass, but largemouth have to be 15", smallmouth have to be 15", and spots have to be 12"s. So you have to fish clear water, catch a bass that's a keeper and make those big, small ones be bigger than anyone elses. My friend, I just don't have the secret to that. Everyone said that practice was extremely tough, "tougher than they'd ever seen it", they said. Well, I managed a limit on day one with 2 largemouth and 3 spots and was in 83rd place. That's rough. The wind blew really hard at Beaver as well, in practice and during the tournament. I really stuggle at trying to find fish on these lakes when you can hardly even drive around. I am unhappy with the 95th place result of this event, but I am surprised my finish wasn't worse and I'm happy to move on to the next one.
Thanks again to sportsmanswarehouse.com for getting me all the baits I need, right on time. Ya'll keep fishing and I'll keep my head up. Take care,

Weather May Play A Role In Sportsman's Warehouse Fisherman's Dream Tournament
Last year the winners in the fifth annual Sportsman's Warehouse Fisherman's Dream Tournament on Chickamauga Lake weighed in a whopping 27-plus pounds to win $1,850.
With the unusual weather experienced so far this past winter and spring, tournament officials say they don't know if that feat can be matched in this year's tournament Saturday or not. The tournament will launch out of Chester Frost State Park on Lake Chickamauga, but anglers can also fish Nickajack and Watts Bar lakes.
“The weather has been extremely unusual here in Chattanooga,” said Coach Chris Neighbors, director of Capital Campaigns and Fund-Raising for Silverdale Baptist Academy which uses the money raised by the annual fishing tournament to support the school's athletic programs. In its five-year history the tournament has raised more than $34,000 for Silverdale's athletic programs.
“We had the hottest March on record for the past 140 years and then it got cool in April. Last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, the temperature struggled to reach 60 degrees. Now it is in the mid to upper 80s,” Neighbors said Monday.
“Last year we had one of our better weigh-ins with several teams bringing in limits from 24 to 27 pounds. We just hope it will be that good this year.”
Neighbors said 20 boats had registered for the tournament by Monday, but he expects a lot more by the weekend.
“That's about par. We've had as few as 10 going into the last week and wound up with 90 boats that year. We had 85 boats last year and we average about 75 to 80 boats each year.”
Entry fee for the tournament is $150 per two-man team with an additional $10 to enter the Big Fish pot, one of two big fish contests in the tournament.
“So far every boat has entered the Big Fish pot, and the prize money is distributed for first and second big fish determined by the number of entries. So, if we have 75 boats in the Big Fish pot, that is $750 in prize money and the pot would be split with $500 for the biggest fish and $250 for the second biggest fish,” Neighbors said.
There is also an hourly big fish contest with no entry fee. Neighbors explained that there will be four big fish hours during the morning of the tournament. The biggest fish weighed in from 8 to 9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m. and 11-12 a.m. will each earn $250.
Anglers entered in the tournament will also be automatically entered in a drawing at the weigh-in for a two-man, 8-foot Pelican Raider bass boat, Neighbors said.
“At this point we have $8,000 in cash and prizes to award at the tournament, with first place on down determined by the number of entries, but first place typically pays between $1,500 and $2,000.”
There will be a mandatory meeting for tournament anglers from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sportsman's Warehouse.

Tim Irwin Food City Tournament Nearing $800,000 Mark For Boys & Girls Clubs Of Tennessee
Pre-tournament entries are running right on schedule for the 24th annual Tim Irwin Food City Bass Tournament Saturday on Tennessee's Loudon, Tellico and Watts Bar Lakes.
“We have about 90 boats registered already,” Irwin said Monday, “which is about normal for the week of the tournament. We expect to have between 150 and 200 boats. A bunch will sign up on site Saturday. Some of the anglers like to get in the last flight going out because they get to fish longer.”
In the 23-year history of the tournament almost $800,000 has been raised for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tennessee and the tournament is a labor of love for Irwin, himself a product of the local Boys & Girls Club.
“My brothers and I were kids in our local Boys and Girls Club and it was very important to our family and to us in the development of our lives. And it continues to do great work for the local children,” said Irwin, former University of Tennessee football player and NFL veteran, who now serves as Knox County Juvenile Court Judge..
“My family also had a great love of fishing and I am a tournament fisherman myself. I wanted to have a quality tournament where the fishermen got paid back the money they pledge, so we work off sponsors and raise $15,000 to $16,000 that way.”
Irwin explained that all of the money donated by sponsors goes straight to the fund for the Boys & Girls Clubs. Due to his efforts Irwin was inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Alumni Hall of Fame May 14, 2009, in Atlanta, Ga.
Entry fee for the tournament is $225 per boat, with a late fee of $10 assessed after 5 p.m. May 3. First place pays $10,000 guaranteed.
“We usually pay at least 30 places. The fishermen get back all their money by helping participate and raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs.”
Details on the tournament are available at three different websites, according to Patrice Staley who works for Irwin. The websites are for the Boys & Girls Clubs and a Facebook entry for the Tim Irwin Bass Tournament. They include : http://www.bgctnv.org/site/PageServer;
http://www.facebook.com/timirwinbasstourn; and
http://www.bgctnv.org/site/DocServer/Bass_Tournament_Form_2012.pdf?docID=1121.
“The Facebook page is new to the tournament and we are trying to gain exposure for it,” Staley said.
Irwin said historically it has taken around 20 pounds to win the tournament which starts at safe light out of Tellico Canal Ramp at Lenoir City, Tenn.
“Anglers can actually fish three lakes – they can fish Loudon or Tellico or, if they want to take the time to lock through, they can fish Watts Bar,” he said.
Although there are a few fish still spawning, the heaviest bags most likely will come fishing deep this weekend, he said.
“I think the majority of the fish will be caught off the banks, particularly up in the main part of the lake. They might find some fish on topwater early in the morning, but I think the big stringers will come a little farther off the bank than usual,” said Irwin.
“We had a very warm spring, the lake has been filling up and there is a moon coming this weekend, but by the time the guys get done practicing and messing with the fish on the beds I think the bigger stringers will come from those who find fish out in the deeper water.”

Tharp Takes Early Lead In Flw Major On Beaver
It’s hard to separate yourself when big bites are so scarce. Only 2 pounds, 3 ounces separate 1st place from 10th.
Tharp’s bass weighed 15 pounds, 7 ounces.
Powroznik’s weighed 14-11.
The rest of the Top 10:

Romans caught Thursday’s big bass weighing 5 pounds 7 ounces on the pro side to win $500.
Overall there were 625 bass weighing 1,144 pounds, 8 ounces caught by pros Thursday.
Tharp is doing something different in some odd places. He has taken precautions to not be seen for very long in any one place. He cut his practice days short in order to avoid being seen. He ran way up the river and fished down lake as well. Tharp had a limit by 8:15 this morning and said 4 of those fish came in the first 15 minutes of his day.
Chad Pipkens of Holt, Mich., leads the Co-angler Division with five bass weighing 10-12 followed by Rich Dalbey of Greenville, Texas, in second place with five bass weighing 10-11.
Rounding out the top 10 co-anglers are:
3rd: Kenny Blackwood, Rogers, Ark., three bass, 9-6
4th: Maurice Cobb, Kuttawa, Ky., four bass, 7-14
5th: Rob Hicks, Lula, Ga., five bass, 7-8

Northeast Florida Association Of Realtors Tournament Benefits Haven Hospice
When Glenn East, chief executive officer of the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors, was looking for a community project for his organization eight years ago he did not have to look far.
“I wanted a project for your realtor members to be involved in that would help the community so I met with the people at Haven Hospice. And with Palatka being the bass capitol of the world what better way to raise money than a bass tournament?” East said.
The idea of a bass tournament benefit was also a natural fit for East, an avid bass angler who has been a member of the St. John's Bassmasters since 1972 and has served as president of the oldest bass club in Florida which was organized in 1970.
East joined forces with Mike Oglesbee, a veteran tournament director who provides his expertise and time free of charge each year. Since the inception of the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors Hospice Tournament in 2004, the annual benefit tournament has raised $143,000 for Haven Hospice, a hospice care provider serving Putnam, Clay and St. John's counties. Haven Hospice offers care and emotional, social, and spiritual support for patients and their families in end-of-life scenarios
East's organization, the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors, is Northeast Florida's largest professional association, comprising more than 5,000 members working in all facets of the real estate industry, including residential and commercial sales as well as property management.
The 9th annual tournament will be held Saturday out of Palatka City Dock and East said that while he has not had a chance to check things out personally the fishermen should find the fishing good.
“They are going to have great weather. Last weekend it was rough with a lot of wind and rain, but we expect a great day of fishing Saturday,” he said. “In the past there have been a lot of bedding fish, but with the warm weather we have been having a lot of the bedding is probably over. There may still be some fish on the bed and there will also be some fish in the grass up and down the river.”
Entry fee for the tournament is $110 with $2,500 guaranteed for first place and $1,000 guaranteed for the big fish of the tournament. The 80 percent payback will go to one in every seven boats. There will also be a cash drawing following the tournament for the tournament boaters.
For the non-fishermen there will be fun, barbecue and drawings for prizes prior to and during during the weigh-in event which begins at 3 p.m.
East said he has a personal interest in the work of Haven Hospice.
“People who work for Haven Hospice are very special people who give loving care to people who need it and especially the families of those people,” he said. “One of my former employes died in Haven Hospice and they took care of her in her last times, so that is very near and dear to my heart.”

With Water Level Down, Fishing 'rather Tough' For Flw Tour Major On Beaver Lake
Dearal Rodgers has had mixed result in five previous FLW Tour tournaments on Arkansas' Beaver Lake, but he notched top 50 finals in the last two events there and is looking for more of the same in the third FLW Tour Major of 2012 this week.
But, it might not be easy.
“Beaver Lake was high a couple of weeks ago but it has been dropped about 6 or 7 feet and is pretty low right now,” said the second-year Camden, S.C., pro. And that, he added, has made the fishing “rather tough.”
Rodgers did not earn a check in his first trip to Beaver Lake as a co-angler in 2006 when he finished near the bottom of the pack. But, he did pick up prize money in his next two trips there, finishing 82nd in 2007 and 81st in 2008, as a co-angler.
His best finish came in 2009 when he weighed in seven bass over two days at 11 pounds, 3 ounces, to finish in 21st place and win $1,300.
The next time he fished Beaver Lake was last year when he finished 50th as a pro angler after weighing in six bass at 14 pounds, 13 ounces, and won $10,000.
In 2009 Rodgers was the FLW Tour's Co-Angler of the Year after registering two top 25s, a top 15 and two top 10s. The following year, he capped his co-angler career by winning the Forrest Wood Cup on Georgia's Lake Lanier. In his second year as a pro angler he is currently ranked 87th, after finishing 68th at Lake Hartwell and 95th on Table Rock in the first two Major tournaments of the year, both in March.
In 2011 Rodgers finished 59th in points, but felt he had a fairly good year as a first-year pro considering the fact that he was able to take only so much time away from his job and did not get to practice sufficiently for most tournaments. Caught between the rigors of tournament fishing and job demands he ran out of steam towards the end of the year.
But that changed this year after he and his wife opened their own business and his financial demands were eased somewhat when Sportsman's Warehouse came on board as his major sponsor. The relationship also helps with planning his fishing strategy, he said.
“I logged onto sportsmanswarehouse.com and ordered some more Spot Removers and trick worms for the event on Beaver Lake,” he said.
After checking out the lake this week Rodgers said he has not seen any fish on the banks.
“They seem to be relating to the steeper areas. I feel like there is going to be a good bite on top early in the morning and then it will get tougher in the middle of the day,” he said. “A lot of Shakey Head fish will be weighed in and I think 10 pounds a day will be very good.”
Rodgers added, “Largemouth keepers are going to be key this week so I'll be trying hard to catch some.”

Fishing Friendships Forged In Warriors On The Water Tournament For Military Anglers
In the six years since the first Warriors on the Water Bass Tournament was held a lot of friendships have been fostered between the anglers and the military men and women they take fishing.
In fact, said Hal Abshire, one of the co-founders of the unique fishing event, many of the military fishermen have been deployed since they fished in the tournament.
“They say that all they thought about is coming back to fishing in the Warriors on the Water Tournament.”
The 7th annual Warriors on the Water Bass Tournament will be held Friday on North Carolina's Jordan Lake. Abshire said the tournament is limited to 150 boats and anglers come from all over the United States to fish with their military partners.
“All the boats will have American flags and there will be yellow ribbons tied on each boat as a welcome home from the front. It is a very unique experience to see that,” he said.
The WOW week begins Wednesday with the Ice Breaker, a social gathering so the anglers and their military counterparts can meet and get to know each other.
“For the past two years we have put two boaters and two military co-anglers at each table so they can not only meet but also sit with them throughout the evening,” Abshire said. “We will also have VIPs in from the military side, commanders from the different branches of service who will speak to the crowd. Bassmaster Classic contender Dustin Wilkes will be a guest speaker representing the Elite side of BASS tournaments.”
And nobody goes home empty-handed, he added.
“When they get there they receive a bag of goodies and this year they get a rod and reel as well. All of this is due to our sponsors who help us put this event on. This whole deal is at no cost to the boaters or the military anglers. Everything all three days is free thanks to the sponsors and the fact that we raise money all year long so we can put this event together.”
Thursday is VIP Day, which is a real treat to the boaters, sponsors and volunteers, Abshire said.
“We take them to Fort Bragg and to Polk Field so they can see what the military people do for a living. We will have them jumping out of a 42-foot tower and sliding down a rope, which is an introduction to parachuting – and they love it. We visit different troops, eat lunch with them, and do just about everything with them for a day.”
On Friday, when the tournament starts Chandler Flynn, a senior at Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque, Iowa, will sing the National Anthem. Over the past four years she has performed in many Grand Opera House productions as well as productions at her school. She plans to study music education and vocal performance in college next year.
Abshire said the boaters love doing the tournament as much as the military anglers they take on the water.
“Some of them have never been in the military and this is a way for them to say 'Thanks.' A lot of friendships have been made and a lot of them stay in touch and fish together through the years,” he said.
Abshire said Warriors on the Water is a non-profit organization founded by three combat veterans as a way to show appreciation to the men and women who serve in the military today. The tournament Friday will launch with all the pageantry of a championship bass tournament, with New Hope Ramp lit up like a small city filled with ladies and others greeting everyone as they come by on their way to the water.
“FLW will have their stage set up for the tournament and Texas Roadhouse will prepare the food for them. It will be a big deal, for sure.”

Flw Major On Beaver Will Offer Challenges
The FLW Tour Major on Beaver Lake kicks off Thursday.
The lake is at normal pool and the water is fairly clear. While Beaver lacks the bass populations found on other White River impoundments, including Table Rock and Bull Shoals, most anglers should be able to fill the livewell. Problem is, an average limit will weigh about 8 pounds. We could be in for a real dink-fest.
But there are lessons to take with us as we look back at any tournament and the toughest conditions tend to be the best teachers.
Again this week we see that a couple of big bites will jump an angler way up in the standings. How will they target those bigger bass?
Sight fishing could be a huge factor as winds diminish and daytime highs top the 80-degree mark during competition. Then again, if females don't follow the bucks up to the bank, sight fishermen will do well to simply cut a paycheck. And its hard to say what will happen, as the wind has blown to 20 mph so far during the practice rounds.
Stay tuned.

Very Good Fishing Forecast For Carolinas Bass Challenge On Lake Norman Saturday
The Carolinas Bass Challenge continues to roll in both North and South Carolina with between 140 and 150 boats expected for the North Carolina Division tournament Saturday on Lake Norman.
“The support for the trail in it's first year has been great,” said tournament director Brett Collins who noted that 190 teams have joined the North Carolina Division so far.
And for good reason. The paybacks have been very strong.
“The past three qualifiers – Lake Murray, Lake Wylie and Lake Norman – have paid first place at least $10,000,” Collins said.
Collins reported that David Williams and Gerald Williams lead the North Carolina Division points standings with Shane Lehew and Larry Lehew in second place.
“Matt Hawood and Ken Fenders are in third place and all three of these teams do well on Lake Norman,” he said. Points winners earn $1,000 for the year.
The field should find fishing very good this weekend, said Collins who noted that while the water level was low for the last CBC tournament in February it looks to be about normal now.
“Fishing has been good so far and the topwater bite should be a big factor this weekend. The shallow bite usually pays off this time of year at Lake Norman,” he noted. “The spawn is about done so most of the fish should be aggressive. The team that can catch a largemouth will probably end up on top.”
Collins asked that the teams fishing the tournament arrive at Pinnacle Landing as early as possible Saturday to facilitate the start of the tournament.
“As usual, we will have food and drinks waiting on the guys when they get back off the lake,” he added.
The Carolinas Bass Challenge is a two-division series promoted by Skeeter Boat dealers Marshall's Marine in Lake City, S.C., Foothills Marine in Morganton, N.C., and Palmetto Marine in Greenville, S.C. The sponsoring boat dealers provide free food for the anglers at the weigh-ins.
The remaining schedules for the two divisions include :
North Carolina Division – April 21, Lake Norman, Pinnacle Landing; May 19, Lake Hickory, Whittenburg; June 2, N.C. Divisional Final, High Rock, Tamarac Marina.
South Carolina Division – April 28, Santee Cooper, John C. Land; May 12, Lake Wateree, Clearwater Cove; June 23, S.C. Divisional Final, Lake Wateree, Clearwater Cove.
The Carolinas Bass Challenge Championship will be held on Kerr Lake October 27, 2012.
The entry fee per tournament is $200 per team and each team member must pay a $35 membership fee. First place in each qualifying tournament is guaranteed $5,000, with $1,000 for big fish. Teams may fish three of four qualifiers in a state division to make the Divisional Final and Championship or they may fish a combination of three qualifiers across divisions and make the Division Final and Championship. The team that wins the points in each state division will win $1,000.
The winning team at both the South Carolina Division Final and the North Carolina Division Final will win a Skeeter TZX190/150 with a Yamaha 150HPDI. The winning team in the Championship on Kerr Lake in October will win a Skeeter ZX200/200 Yamaha SHO.

Entries Up Dramatically For Second Year Of Oakley Big Bass Classic On Smith Mountain Lake
Early entries are up dramatically for the second annual Oakley Blue Ridge Big Bass Classic on Smith Mountain Lake this weekend and Mark Jones with the Oakley Big Bass Tour said he expects the final entry to be upwards of 400 anglers.
“There is a chance of rain on Sunday, but it is looking like we may get lucky and have pretty decent weather for the tournament this weekend with just a little bit of rain Sunday,” Jones said.
“This is year two for the Smith Mountain tournament and all the reports I have been getting indicate the fishing is going pretty good right now. I'd say we will get a 5-, 6-, 7- or possibly an 8-pound fish as the overall winner.”
JD Perdue won the 2011 Smith Mountain tournament with a 5.54-pound bass but that tournament was held in May, a month later than this year's event.
Jones described the Oakley-sponsored tournaments as a “big bass format, with seven hourly weigh-ins on Saturday and seven hourly weigh-ions on Sunday.”

Gainey Hoping To Lose 'confusion' By Time Everstart Tournament Starts On Santee Cooper
Nick Gainey spent the first half of this week trying to make sense out of the confusion over the bass in the Santee Cooper Lakes as he prepared for the FLW EverStart Series Southeast Division tournament this coming weekend.
After practicing on his home waters Friday and Saturday, the Charleston, S.C., angler admitted the bass had him more than a little befuddled.
“I fished on some key trees that I normally catch fish on and I had five bites for the two days,” Gainey said. “And then Saturday they had a BFL tournament out of John C. Land Landing and the boy who won it caught 27 pounds and he was fishing trees like I had been for two days.”
Chuck Howard of Elloree weighed in five bass at 27 pounds, 14 ounces, Saturday to win the BFL South Carolina Division tournament on the Santee Cooper Lakes, earning $3,466 for first place, plus a $2,000 Ranger Cup bonus.
This time of year, Gainey said, the bass are mostly in post-spawn and typically the first place they go after spawning it to the standing trees in the lakes.
“A lot of times they will be on an isolated tree, or a tree on an isolated point or island. That is the best spot. Sometimes a little group of trees around an island will do well, too.”
The problem is finding the key trees, he said.
“They are not on every tree at Santee. You can catch 25 pounds on some trees and then you can fish 500 other trees and not catch a fish.”
So, his game plan this week was to concentrate on an area where he believed a group of fish would be instead of running all over the lake.
“Just pick a quadrant and spend three days trying to fish it down,” he said.
A lot is at stake for Gainey, who is currently ranked 68th in the EverStart Southeast Division, in this EverStart tournament on his local waters. He had mixed success in Florida and Georgia earlier this year, finishing 112th on Lake Okeechobee in the EverStart in January, but rallying to a 43rd place finish on Lake Seminole a month ago.
Ironically, he suffered one of his worst tournaments in the Okeechobee EverStart but had one of his best outings on the same lake three weeks later, finishing 10th in the Walmart FLW Series Open tournament there February 9.
“I did very well in the EverStart on Lake Seminole, which gave me two good tournaments in a row after I finished 10th in the Open on Lake Okeechobee,” he said. “At least I am on a little roll now.”
That, and the fact that he is noted for following poor practices with good tournaments, could bode well for Gainey in the Santee Cooper EverStart this week.
“I'm pretty confident because I have this pattern going in tournaments,” he said. “I have some friends from Georgia and West Virginia that I travel with to tournaments and they accuse me of lying because if I have a bad practice I am liable to whack them in the tournament. I've done that a half a dozen times.”
He recounted a tournament on the Potomac River a few years ago when he struggled mightily in practice – and then finished fourth in the tournament.
“When a tournament starts,” he said, “you just put your head down, don't run everywhere, and you just fish. Fish where you got some good bites. I have that rep going, so I feel good about the tournament.”

Collegiate Anglers Already Eyeing Pickwick
When Association of Collegiate Anglers (ACA) teams from all over the nation descend on Pickwick Lake in late May for the 2012 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, grinding out a limit shouldn't be a problem. The issue will be who can catch a kicker each day - or possibly a limit of kicker-caliber fish - to claim the title.
TVA neighbors like Guntersville and Kentucky Lake have claimed the headlines for many years, but Pickwick is a lake that seems to be peaking right now.
"It used to be a lake that people would dread going there," said two-tour pro Ish Monroe. "Now it's no problem to catch 30 or more fish a day if you get on the right shell bed and the current is flowing. It's a combination of the grass and the lack of pressure on the lake."
The average size of the fish has increased along with their numbers. "It's pretty amazing," said Cabela's pro Clark Wendlandt. "A few years ago there were tons of two-pounders. Now there are tons of three- to five-pound bass and some bigger ones, too." The lake produced multiple double-digit bass this spring, including one that unofficially weighed in at about 15 pounds.
Both pros agree that the key bite will likely be offshore, on the Tennessee River ledges that are the summertime bread and butter for regional anglers. "Once you get on a good ledge, it's just a waiting game as to when they're going to bite," Monroe said.
So what makes a key spot on a ledge?
"You're looking for mussels, gravel, maybe a little bit of rock at the end of a drop-off," Wendlandt said.
For collegiate anglers who must split their time between the water and the classroom, that makes practice a comparatively easy affair. Monroe said that with his Navionics chip and high-tech electronics, any angler could pick out key areas to try long before he hit the water. "With the online application, you can do all of your practicing at home, looking for channel swings and key depths," he explained. "Then you can load all of your waypoints onto a blank card and go right to them when you get there." Key lures for ledge fishing include deep-diving crankbaits, football head jigs, Carolina Rigs, flutter spoons and castable umbrella rigs.
Both Monroe and Wendlandt believe that it'll take 15 pounds a day to be in contention, but that it could easily take 20 or more to claim the victory if conditions set up right.
"There are going to be a whole lot of fish caught," Wendlandt said. "There's no reason to hold back."
While the ledges will dominate, some anglers might be able to find a decent bite in the limited backwaters if the water levels are up. If they're high enough, Monroe said he might spend some time in those areas chunking his signature frog. It's a fallback pattern to be sure, more likely to produce a wad of two-pounders than the threes and fours it'll probably take to win, but he also believes it provides the best chance of catching a seven-plus-pound mule, so it might be worth the gamble.
Wendlandt said he wished that the ACA had been around when he was in school. "It's an awesome way to get a good degree but also learn about the outdoors," he said. "Maybe some of these students will become professional anglers, but others may learn that there are other ways to become involved in the industry."
He's also proud that his title sponsor, Cabela's, is the also a stalwart supporter of this effort.
"I think it's awesome that Cabela's is supporting these college kids," he stated. "It's the future of our sport and a great testament to their commitment to the outdoors."
After three days of practice, May 21-23, 2012, the competitors in the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship will launch on competition days May 24 and 25, 2012, from McFarland Park in Florence, Alabama. The tournament will subsequently be televised on NBC Sports Outdoors.

Kansas State University Wins FLW College Fishing National Championship on Lake Murray
The National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship on Lake Murray is a team event. Twenty-five teams from across the country competed in 20 qualifying events and five conference championship tournaments, and the top five teams from each conference competed for the title of national champion in this prestigious three-day nationally televised event. Teams go through the grueling season in the hopes of sharing the spotlight and title of national champion with their teammate.
However, the Kansas State University team of Ryan Patterson of Goddard, Kan., wasn't much of a team. Patterson's teammate and brother transferred from Kansas State, so Patterson fished the championship event alone. And he didn't even weigh a five-bass limit of fish every day. And he did the unthinkable by claiming the title of national champion.
On Sunday Patterson weighed five bass for 18 pounds, 1 ounce for a three-day total of 14 bass weighing 46-15 to claim the national championship title. Patterson took the title by 2 pounds, 4 ounces. For his efforts, Patterson received $50,000 cash, a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower engine for his school's bass club and $25,000 for Kansas State University.

"I don't even know what to say," said Patterson, a junior advertising major. "The whole time I was pretty nervous. When I got up here I knew it was going to be close.
"I'll be real honest with you," Patterson added. "I'm a very confident fisherman. I'm very confident in my abilities. I didn't expect to catch 20 pounds every day, but I knew I was going to catch my five, and if I got some breaks here and there I was going to do well."
Patterson said his equipment was "crucial" to his victory. He used G Loomis swimbait rods in a 7-foot, 1-inch version and a 7-foot, 3-inch version, Shimano Chronarch reels, 14-pound-test Sunline Fluorocarbon, YUM Money Minnows with a Lazer Trokar hook and Zoom Flukes with a Lazer Trokar hook.
"With three minutes to go I broke off a 5-pounder," said an emotional Patterson. "My rod snapped when I set the hook. I sat there and said, 'Well my rod just snapped and I just lost $100,000.'"
Now Patterson gets to go up against the best professional anglers on the planet in the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart. The Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing, will be held Aug. 9-12 on Lake Lanier in Duluth, Ga., and will offer anglers the opportunity to compete for a top award of $500,000.
"I told everyone when I came here that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Patterson said. "And the guys that do this for a living … you don't realize how good those guys are and how hard it is to make it where they're at. And for me to have an opportunity like this … it's an amazing experience. I'm definitely excited. I'll take the Cinderella ride all the way to the Forrest Wood Cup. Anything can happen."
Rounding out the top five teams are:
2nd: Clemson University – Andy Wicker, Pomaria, S.C., and Harold Turner, Sumter, S.C. (15 bass, 44-11, $10,000) 3rd: Kennesaw State University – Thomas Frink, Woodstock, Ga., and Justin Marlow, Kennesaw, Ga. (14 bass, 43-7, $5,000) 4th: Auburn University – Jordan Lee, Vinemont, Ala., and Matt Lee, Auburn, Ala. (15 bass, 43-3, $5,000) 5th: Virginia Tech – Wyatt Blevins, Pulaski, Va., and Carson Rejzer, Hampton, Va. (15 bass, 39-9, $5,000).
Complete results can be found at CollegeFishing.com.
FLW has awarded more than $3 million in prizes to more than 125 colleges and universities. College Fishing events are free to enter, boats and drivers are provided by FLW and all collegiate teams receive a travel allowance.
Four regular-season events were held in each conference – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Texas and Western. The top five teams in each qualifying event advanced to one of five televised three-day National Guard FLW College Fishing Conference Championships. The top five teams from each conference championship advanced to the national championship, and the winner of the national championship will qualify for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart. The Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing, will be held Aug. 9-12 on Lake Lanier in Duluth, Ga., and will offer the collegiate anglers the opportunity to compete for a top award of $500,000. The national champions also will receive use of a wrapped boat and Chevy truck for Forrest Wood Cup competition.
