Timing Of Elite Tournament Could Change Robinson’s Luck On Lake Guntersville
Marty Robinson has had a lot of experience fishing Lake Guntersville – not much of it good. But he is hoping the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on the Alabama Lake April 9-12 will be a major turning point in that history of mostly bad tournaments.
“Guntersville seems to be one of my toughest lakes to figure out in the past,” said the elite Series pro from Lyman, S.C. “I am hoping all that will change one of these days – hopefully next week.”
And, he said, timing of the tournament could play a major role in a reversal of his fortunes on the lake.
“The last two times we were there it has been more like post-spawn and the fish had pretty much got off the banks and grouped up good. There were a handful of guys who found that one spot loaded with a school of 3- and 4-pound fish.”
This time it should be different, he said. The fish should be more in a spawning mode and still on the banks.
“I think it’s probably prime time spawning going on down there right now. I don’t feel like a lot of them will have come off the beds and got grouped up on those post-spawn places like before, so I think the guys depending on that will struggle a little to find places holding groups of big fish.”
Robinson said he will leave for Guntersville Sunday after church.
“I will take my boys to church for Easter Sunday and then they will be out for spring break next week so my wife and kids are going down there with me. That will be good.”
One he gets into practice the first of the week, Robinson said he will tie on some moving baits – spinnerbaits and swimbaits – so he can cover a lot of water and try to find a little stretch or two where some fish are spawning.
“I think most of the fish will be on the bank, either trying to spawn or cruising and looking for a places to spawn, so I will go from there and target those places where fish are trying to spawn.” he said.
