Close call for Williams on the Delta! His full Tournament report right here!
Stop number three on the Elite series Sacramento. California Delta is a interesting place to say the least! It fishes similar to Okeechobee but it is some very tide affected water. First day of practice I actually started in an area near the campground where I was staying and it was full of big fish! I knew this area was a area that I could win in if I could have it alone. Over the next two days I really got dialed into a really strong spinnerbait and buzzbait bite and I felt very confident with what I had found. I could ride around and find what I was looking for and stop and make a few cast and catch one and leave. The big factor for me was the wind and it blew every day during practice. These fish would set up on the back side of grass clumps and anything coming by would get mashed! I caught 8-9 fish over 5 pounds during practice just jumping around so I was very excited to get the event started. Day 1 of the event started at 6:15am and I’m boat 107. I haven’t made the run down to the delta from sacramento during practice so I didn’t know how it would be but it was one of the most challenging parts of the event. The run I was making was about 1 hour and 40 min and was full of no wake zones! I also had to figure out where I needed to buy fuel during the day. I finally arrived at my 1st stop of the day at 8:05 am. I pulled into the area that I had talked about earlier where I felt like I could win and as I was ideling in I saw Aaron martens, then Jason Christie, John Crews, Dennis Tejay, Mike McCleland, and Ken Iobe had all beat me there. At that point it was like you let the wind out of me! I made a quick pass and caught 2 small ones and left because it was too crowded that ended up being a bad decision because everyone in this area made the cut and 4 made the top 12. I left to run another area and when I got there 2 locals were fishing in the area but I was able to fish. I had a lot of confidence in this area also because the bream were bedding heavily. I had a couple of giant bass to come up and just chase my bait but wouldn’t eat it. I ended up catching a few small fish but never got ones I needed so I scrambled to some rocky banks late in the day just to fill a limit. I then had to go buy me some fuel and make the long ride back. Disappointing day 1 had 5 that went 9.11 but your in the delta 25-30lbs is there so I still got a shot. Day 2 I decide to start around the bream beds and they didn’t pay off so I went into another area I found and it took me a little but I started to get something pretty good going so I still knew I had a shot. I started catching them on a popper around holes in the grass. I got a limit quickly and started to cull but for some reason the big fish in the area would not commit to the bait they would just swim up to it and look then go down. That was very frustrating to have giant bass doing that over and over! I even threw a wacky worm on them with no results. I just basically ran out of time and had to start to make my run in but I gotta get fuel first. I stopped at the marina and Greg Hackney was getting gassed up so I waited and the pump cut off on him and he got the last gallon of gas at the marina! I didn’t know what to do but to take a chance and make the run back. I dropped my speed back and just kinda tried to conserve as much fuel as I could. My fuel light came on 25 miles south of sacramento and I was getting really nervous. I was bairley able to make it to check in on fumes and while I was loading the boat it ran out of gas! I was very fortunate! I ended up having 14.4 on day 2 and 23.15 total about 4 pounds short of the cut. I never got the big bite I needed but I learned that if your not in your best area during right tide you ain’t gonna catch em! Off to lake Havasu!
