Bass Bite Getting Really Good For Snag Proof Open On Cherokee Lake

Snag Proof Pro Staffer and 2012 Bassmaster Classic Champion Chris Lane

Anglers in the Second Annual Snap Proof Open on Lake Cherokee in Tennessee can expect excellent fishing Saturday, according to tournament director Sam Phillips at Morristown Marine.

“We’ve had reports that the Snag Proof Jig bite is great and the Snag Proof Frog bite has been really good,” Phillips said. “There are reports of 11 to 14 pounds for three fish taken on the frog.”

Phillips said the water level is coming up a little and some anglers are fishing deep with the jig while others are fishing shallow with the frog. The weigh-in limit is three bass, which can include both smallmouth and largemouth.

“They are throwing the jig off points and bluffs and a lot of them are swimming the white jig for suspended fish in deeper water,” he said, noting that white is the primary color for the jig with black and blue as a backup color. “We don’t have a lot of grass in the lake, but up the rivers there are some shallow logs and some grass. Then there is the shoreline. We don’t know exactly where they are throwing the frog because they won’t reveal their spots.”

Phillips said a lot of anglers are waiting on Snag Proof to bring its new in-line spinnerbait so they can try it out, too.

“All the Snag proof products can be used in the tournament,” he said, “not just the plastics. We are allowing a lot of modifications, as long as the original bait is a Snag Proof product. That can include any brand of trailer, any brand of jig skirt, any brand of swim bait; they can paint it, dye it, add weight and take weight off. It’s pretty much wide open.”

Phillips said the entry fee is $140, which includes big fish for both smallmouth and largemouth, with $10,000 guaranteed for first place. There is Skeeter Real Money for the tournament. A Skeeter-Yamaha owner can sign up for a shot at winning an additional $3,000.

“We are expecting between 100 and 150 boats and anglers can sigh up here at Morristown Marine this week or at the ramp the morning of the tournament. They can phone in and sign up as long as they pick up their flight card before the blastoff Saturday morning,” Phillips said.

“If anybody has any questions they can call me at Morristown Marine, 423-587-3555.”
