15-yr-old angler lands 7-lb bass on 4-lb line!

Courtney McCullough had a career day fishing with StarBrite Pro Patrick Pierce at Bienville Plantation's newest hot spot, Thomas Lake. The 15-year-old tossed pink trick worms on 4-lb fluorocarbon line and hauled-in dozens of bass, including the biggest of the day at 7.1 pounds and another that weighed 5.75. Her biggest 5 would have easily weighed over 20.

Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Trail Qualifier #3 Results - Shearon Harris

Teaser image:

Well, things are starting to get back to normal weatherwise bringing a large crowd to fish the PBC Qualifer #3 at
Shearon Harris. We did get a break in the weather today, but it was still cold in the morning at 35 degrees but
pretty nice towards days end with about 55. Wind, however, was the factor today with 5 to 15 mph then some gusts
up to about 20. Water temps ranged from 55 to 59 depending on the area fished. Most of the 65 teams said the
bite was pretty shallow and many of the bass were seen in 1 to 2 foot of water in the shade of the grass beds which
means the spawn is coming soon!

Kevin Beverly & Tyler Faggart took their first win this year with 5 bass weighing a total of 27.46 lbs. along with
1st place TWT for a total of $2,333 in winnings. Greyson Barefoot & Aaron Johnson took 2nd place with 4 fish
weighing 22.07 lbs. They also won the Big Fish Award (7.98 lbs.) and 2nd Place TWT for a grand total of $2,141.
2nd Place Big Fish (7.98 lbs.) was caught by the team of Jerry Marshburn & Chuck Byrd (7.93 lbs.) netting them
$384 in cash.
100 fish were weighed in for a total of 355 pounds for an average of 3.56 lbs. each. There were a lot more bass
caught that could not be weighed in because of the slot limit rule on Harris. Most of the fish were caught on
plastics and jerk baits with a few on topwater.
I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support this trail.
Coming up April 4th will be the
Cashion Fishing Rods Spring Team Bass Mini Trail Q#3 at Shearon Harris. On
the following weekend we have a double header, the Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail
Qualifier #4 on April 11th At Falls Lake and the Qualifier #2 on April 12th at Jordan Lake which is the makeup
date for the that event that was supposed to be held on March 14th.

Heavyweight Weigh-In Predicted For Carolinas Bass Challenge On Jordan Lake Saturday

Look for some heavy bags to be weighed in the Carolinas Bass Challenge North Carolina Division tournament on Jordan Lake Saturday, according to an angler who knows the lake well.

“It will definitely take 25 pounds-plus to win it,” said Dave Murdock, who lives in Sanford, N.C., just 15 minutes from the lake. “Jordan has got some whopper fish in it and there are always some 30-pound sacks weighed in the spring.”

What is phenomenal, Murdock said, is that kind of big bass bonanza carries right on into the summer.

“You can catch them in Jordan. There are 25-pound stringers weighed in the summer.”

Although Murdock and teammate Tony Fofi normally fish the CBC South Carolina Division tournaments, they plan to fish Lake Jordan Saturday because it is so close to where they live.

“I used to live in Sumter (S.C.) and have fished those South Carolina lakes for years,” Murdock said. “We decided to fish the Jordan Lake tournament because we usually do fairly well on the lake.”

Murdock obviously knows South Carolina's Lake Wateree pretty well, too. He and Fofi weighed in a five-bass limit at 25 pounds even to win the March 7 CBC-SC on Wateree, earning a $12,500 payday – $10,000 for first place plus $2,500 for the Highest Finishing Skeeter Bonus.

Although he did not get a chance to pre-practice on Jordan Lake and it is off limits the week before the tournament, Murdock said the bass are probably the same as everywhere else at this point – up shallow, either spawning or looking to spawn.

“We typically fish the backs of main lake pockets,” he said, “because we feel we have a better opportunity to catch the spawning and pre-spawn fish there.”

Murdock said he and Fofi will target sunken timber in those pockets.

“The water in Jordan raises and lowers anywhere from 3 to 20 feet in a matter of a couple of days, so there are a lot of floating logs and a lot of times they settle in the backs of the pockets and some of them end up sunken there,” he said.

“We usually give the fish a one-two punch. We both don't fish the same lure unless it is just absolutely the same thing that is catching fish,” Murdock said. “We throw different things to give them a different look, mainly plastics and jigs, with probably some spinnerbaits and a little topwater early in the morning.”

Saturday's weigh-in should be exciting with a lot of 5-pound, maybe even 6-pound, averages for a five-fish limit.

Sergeant Major Jamey Caldwell Signs With Strike King Pro Staff; Embarks On 2Nd Career

Strike King Promotes Sergeant Major Jamey Caldwell to National Pro Staff Team

Strike King Lure Company announces the addition Jamey Caldwell of Carthage, NC to the national Strike King Pro staff.  Allan Ranson Chief Operating Officer says, “I have known Jamey for 5 years and it is rare to find someone who puts as much energy and effort into whatever he is doing to be the best that he can be.  He is an expert on technology used for fishing and all the equipment and has lots experience with product development.  He is an accomplished angler, is great at giving seminars and is active on all forms of social media.”

Becoming a bass pro is a second career and a dream for Jamey.  In December 2014 he retired from a 21-year career in the U. S. Army. Most of his first 7 years were in the 75th Ranger Regiment and then he spent 14 years in an Elite Special Operations unit at Ft. Bragg, NC.  The majority of his career was spent fighting the War on Terror.  He was too humble to share but from his official military records it shows that during this time he was deployed 14 times to various theaters for combat operations.  He received 8 Bronze Stars (2 with Valor), 3 Defense Meritorious Service Medals, 1 Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Army Commendation Medals (1 with valor), 16 other medals and 11 other awards as well as a long list of training courses and expertise in many areas.  After being a Tier One Operator for so long he is now ready to pick up a fishing rod full time!

“The characteristics of the men that achieve this highest level of military training and achievement uniquely position them for success at whatever they choose to do.  They have the drive, smarts and energy to win,” says Ranson.  “I have seen Jamey take these traits into his fishing, even win a tournament right after a deployment on which he did his pre-fish planning while in Iraq!  He has infectious energy and is fun to be around.  We want to help him fulfill his dream and know that he will be a tough competitor on the water and a great ambassador for our Company.  This year he will be fishing the Southern and Northern B.A.S.S. Opens with the hopes of qualifying for the ELITES.  “Elite” is a good word to describe Jamey so I expect it to happen!”

Says Jamey, “While serving in a Special Operations unit I was provided with the best tools available to do my job.  Now Strike King is arming me with the best lures on the market to fish at the Elite level.  It is a great privilege to be part of such an amazing company and I am honored to represent them.  The road to the Elite series is not going to be an easy one but nothing I have chosen to do in life has been easy.”

QUITMAN, TX (April 1, 2015) – The Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) will feature 35 of the world’s best anglers Memorial Day Weekend, May 23 – 25, 2015 on Lake Fork in Quitman, Texas. Highlights from the field include 3-time TTBC winner and defending champion, Keith Combs and 2015 Bassmaster Classic Champion, Casey Ashley.

The 2015 final field is made up of the top 15 anglers in 2014 Angler of the Year points from both the FLW and Bass Elite Series. “This is one of the strongest and most talented fields we’ve ever had,” said Lenny Francoeur, Tournament Director. “We shattered records during last years’ event and with yet another star studded field; we could be looking at rewriting those records this Memorial Day on Lake Fork.”

The field boasts a combined 190 wins, 19 Angler of the Year Awards, 19 Majors and over $56 million in career earnings. In addition to 30 professional anglers there are 4 sponsor exemptions which include Mike Iaconelli, Kelly Jordon, Terry Scroggins and Kevin VanDam and defending champion, Keith Combs.

“The TTBC is the tournament I look forward to above all others each year,” said Keith Combs “As a native Texan, it was a dream come true to win my third TTBC title last year and I cannot wait to return to the incredible Lake Fork, with the best anglers in the world, to defend my title in May.”

Along with the coveted title of TTBC Champion, the anglers will be battling it out for two additional awards: the Toyota Tundra Big Bass Award and the LEER Heavy Weight Award. The Toyota Tundra Big Bass Award is new to the 2015 event. The angler who catches the single heaviest fish from any of the three days of the competition will win a 2015 Toyota Tundra. Timing Of Elite Tournament Could Change Robinson's Luck On Lake Guntersville

Marty Robinson has had a lot of experience fishing Lake Guntersville – not much of it good. But he is hoping the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on the Alabama Lake April 9-12 will be a major turning point in that history of mostly bad tournaments.

“Guntersville seems to be one of my toughest lakes to figure out in the past,” said the elite Series pro from Lyman, S.C. “I am hoping all that will change one of these days – hopefully next week.”

And, he said, timing of the tournament could play a major role in a reversal of his fortunes on the lake.

“The last two times we were there it has been more like post-spawn and the fish had pretty much got off the banks and grouped up good. There were a handful of guys who found that one spot loaded with a school of 3- and 4-pound fish.”

This time it should be different, he said. The fish should be more in a spawning mode and still on the banks.

“I think it's probably prime time spawning going on down there right now. I don't feel like a lot of them will have come off the beds and got grouped up on those post-spawn places like before, so I think the guys depending on that will struggle a little to find places holding groups of big fish.”

Robinson said he will leave for Guntersville Sunday after church.

“I will take my boys to church for Easter Sunday and then they will be out for spring break next week so my wife and kids are going down there with me. That will be good.”

One he gets into practice the first of the week, Robinson said he will tie on some moving baits – spinnerbaits and swimbaits – so he can cover a lot of water and try to find a little stretch or two where some fish are spawning.

“I think most of the fish will be on the bank, either trying to spawn or cruising and looking for a places to spawn, so I will go from there and target those places where fish are trying to spawn.” he said.

Shriners Hold Dogwood Bass Tournament On Lake Norman To Help Kids In Hospital

The Lake Norman Shrine Club is a small organization – about 40 members – and they don't even have a permanent meeting place, but over the past 35 years they have raised nearly half a million dollars for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, S.C.

They have raised that money by holding a bass tournament on Lake Norman a little bit at a time, some years $7,000 or $8,000, some other years up to $12,000 to $15,000. Not bad for a group of hard working Shriners who are not actually bass fishermen themselves.

And they do it on a shoestring, depending on local businesses and individuals to donate $100 to $250 each to support the effort for the children. With no major sponsors and no boat to give to the winners, it's hard to compete with the myriad of other tournaments held on Lake Norman, said Shrine Club tournament organizer Bill Cork of Denver, N.C.

The Lake Norman Shrine Club will hold the 36th annual Dogwood Bass Tournament on Lake Norman out of Midway Marina Saturday. It is the longest-running charity tournament held on the lake.

Entry fee is $100 per team with and additional optional big fish pot. The total guaranteed purse is $5,500, Cork said, with $2,500 for first place down to $100 for 10th place. The last two years the tournament has drawn 72 boats, he said.

So far, Cork said, the club is running about $800 short on sponsor donations, so there is plenty of opportunity for local businesses to promote their company while helping the children in need with a small donation.

“In the last few years if we are close to an even figure our club just sticks in the rest of the money,” Cork said. “The Shriners Hospital is currently helping over 280 children from the Catawba and surrounding areas.”

Cork also noted that all proceeds above the payout for the tournament goes to the hospital because Shriners can't put a price on what they do for kids, so they do it for free.

Johnston-Newberry jack 25-plus to win Ray Roberts

by Brett Carlson

Stephen Johnston & Dicky Newberry

Stephen Johnston and Dicky Newberry are accustomed to seeing their names at or near the top of a bass tournament leaderboard. Many of those wins and high finishes have come on their home waters of Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. But Lake Ray Roberts, the site of the third Texas Team Trail presented by Cabela's event, is a long ways from home. Ironically, the two put together their best performance of the season as many of the 243 teams struggled with high pressure conditions.

Heading out this morning as boat No. 78, Johnston and Newberry knew it was going to be a struggle. On Thursday night, a cold front hit the area and put the bass in a major funk. That was followed with extremely high winds Friday, which further deteriorated the water clarity in the backs of pockets and creeks. While the bass are beginning to spawn all over the lake, seeing them proved to be a challenge, which played right into Johnston and Newberry's hands.

"Yesterday in practice we only got four bites so we knew what we were in for," said Johnston, the Lucas Oil pro. "These are Floridas (Florida-strain largemouths) and they get that high pressure headache and don't want to bite. But we've been here enough that we know some of the areas where they live. This morning we started on our first spot and got two little bites and missed them both."

Johnston then returned to a stretch of bank where he shook off a giant in practice. Right away the 8.22-pounder bit his 5-inch V&M Thunder Shad swimbait.

"That just kind of got us started," recalled Johnston. "It doesn't always happen like that, but when it does, it sure is nice. Then pretty quick after that we got a 2 1/2-pounder. Then Dicky pulled into another tree and caught an 8-pounder."

"It was actually a log I've fished several times in the past when the water was up," explained Newberry. "We watched three other boats fish that same log and come away with nothing. To catch a big one afterwards is pretty remarkable; it felt like everything was just lining up."

"An hour later we caught a 4-pounder and at 11:15 we finished our limit," said Johnston. "With about 30 minutes left we caught another one that culled us up a few ounces."

The final tally between the two was seven keepers, with the five best weighing 25.03 pounds.

"When we weighed our 25 pounds we were just hoping for a top 10," said Johnston. "Then after a while we noticed the weights were down and we were hoping for a top five. To win is absolutely unexpected."

While several of their fish may have been protecting nests, Johnston said none of them were caught sight-fishing.

"Dicky and I aren't sight guys. We'd rather just sit back and fish. We knew the fish were coming; that's what is on their minds. But it rained so hard last week and it blew so hard yesterday that the pockets were kind of muddied up. I think that muddy water really helped us."

Two of the winning team's five weigh fish came on the Thunder Shad swimbait with a 1/16-ounce belly hook. Two also came throwing a Texas-rigged V&M Lizard with a 3/16-ounce weight and one came from a 3/8-ounce Santone swim jig with a Thunder Shad. All of the fish were caught in 2 to 6 feet and most were relating to bank grass and Ray Roberts' plentiful trees. Johnston and Newberry said they focused on the lake's north creeks.

"We thought we were going to catch them staging on things like the side of trees or on secondary points," said Newberry. "But in practice we did better on the bank so we stuck with it and kept the trolling motor down."

For winning the third qualifier of the year, Johnston and Newberry claimed a Ranger Z119C with a Mercury ProXS 225 and an additional $2,220 of Anglers Advantage money for a total prize package worth $47,220.

"It's backwards, but sometimes it can hurt you knowing so much at home," Johnston said. "It's a weird deal. You drive five hours to a lake you fish twice a year and you catch 'em. But this lake set up right for us. When you get in an area that has 'em, you just keep your head down and keep plugging along.

"To win is still a big shock. We really thought there would be 30-pound sacks; everybody was anticipating that. With some of our primary sponsors like Lucas Oil, Ranger and Mercury sponsoring this event, it's a huge deal for us to win."

Chapman-Delgado take second

Greg Chapman and Paul Delgado finished second with five bass weighing 24.78 pounds. To reach that total, the two employed a unique wait-and-see approach with their best area.

"We had been fishing one certain creek for a while," said Delgado, the Grapevine, Texas, native. "We knew there would be a ton of boats there in the morning so we purposely stayed away from it."

Instead of running their primary program, Chapman and Delgado started with a Strike King KVD swim jig. But with just a 3-pounder and a 2-pounder in the livewell at 12:30 p.m., they knew it was time to make their move.

"We went back into that creek, pulled up to a point and caught our first fish, which was about an 8-pounder," said Delgado. "Then we just started culling through quality fish, but we never got another one over 5 pounds."

Slowly dragging watermelon-colored Flukes, one person would throw towards the bank and the other would throw parallel to the bank. Only one fish, their last keeper of the day, came from sight-fishing.

"We fished a lot of cedar trees and the whole key was knowing where to throw," said Chapman, the Keller, Texas, angler.

For second place, Chapman and Delgado earned $7,728, $1,628 of it coming from the Anglers Advantage program.

"We're really pleased with it," said Chapman. "We enjoyed ourselves and the payouts are great. We would like to thank our employer, US-Instrument Services, and our wives for letting us do this."

Cecil-Castledine settle for third

Russell Cecil and Todd Castledine finished third with a limit weighing 23.76 pounds, but were one bed fish away from taking another title. The two started on a spawning 7-pounder this morning, but couldn't get her to bite.

"We thought we might be able to go back to it later, but someone swooped in there and caught it," explained Cecil. "We gambled and we lost. It was nothing unsportsmanlike."

After unsuccessfully coaxing the first spawner, Cecil and Castledine decided to just go blind- fishing.

"I was mainly throwing a 5 1/2-inch Big Bite Baits BB Kicker on a 1/2-ounce J-Will swimbait jighead. We would also mix in some flipping in the trees. We probably got up to 20 pounds doing that and then we made a couple key culls sight-fishing late."

Of the five fish that were weighed, three came via sight-fishing and two came from blind-fishing. When the two weren't looking on the bank, they were fishing the first little break.

"We were targeting spawners and immediate prespawners," added Cecil.

When he was flipping and sight-fishing, Cecil would opt for a Big Bite Baits Yomama. Castledine used a Strike King Rage Bug up on the bank.

For third place, the two earned $5,640 with Anglers Advantage, Ranger and Evinrude bonuses.

"The thing about this lake is that if you can get some bites, you're going to have big ones," said Cecil. "There's just not that many small fish in it. It can be stingy, but there's always big ones. If we would have caught that first big one, we would have won. But if we wouldn't have left that spawner and just gone fishing we might never have been in that position. So it's kind of a double-edged sword."

With their best performance of the season, Cecil and Castledine are once again positioning themselves for a run at the Lucas Oil Team of the Year award.

Bonds-Nitschke fourth, Herron-Sugg fifth

In fourth place with five fish for 22.86 pounds was Jason Bonds and James Nitschke. Behind them in fifth was Michael Herron and Marty Sugg with 22.61 pounds. Herron and Sugg achieved their weight on only four fish - one of which weighed 9.07 pounds.

Lefbre Wins FLW Tourney on Lewis Smith Lake

FLW Tour pro Dave Lefebre of Erie, Pennsylvania, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Sunday weighing 19 pounds, 5 ounces to win the Walmart FLW Tour at Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude. Lefebre’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 65-5 gave him a 1-pound, 14-ounce margin of victory over second place pro Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas, in the nationally-televised event that featured 154 of the best professional bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for the top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I couldn’t sleep last night because I was so excited to go fishing today,” said Lefebre, an 11-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier. “I wasn’t even thinking about winning the tournament, I just wanted to move up a few spots and cash a nice check. Today was one of the biggest surprises of my entire career.”

Lefebre said that he caught most of his fish this week fishing in the backs of creeks. His plan was to start each day by targeting spotted bass, then move to the largemouth once the sun came up and the temperatures warmed.

“In the mornings I was throwing a white- or albino-colored ½-ounce Fish Head Spin with a Yamamoto D-Shad superglued to it,” Lefebre said. “My goal was to catch one or two keeper spotted bass early and then go looking for the keeper largemouth. The largemouth were in the back of the pockets keying on the blueback herring spawn. The key was to find the pockets that the blueback were in.

“I caught most of my largemouth on a Rapala BX Waking Minnow,” Lefebre continued. “I caught 24 pounds in practice flipping, and I really thought that I would be fishing this tournament with a big jig. But on the last day of practice I started messing around with a few other baits and that’s when I started to get confidence in that BX Minnow. I could make super long casts, and a lot of the fish would track it for 20 feet before they would bite it. The BX is what got me here.”

Lefebre’s strategy paid off, as he managed to weigh in both species each day of the tournament. Of the 20 bass that Lefebre brought to the scale, eight were spotted bass and 12 were largemouth.

“I had an awesome day – two or three of the best things that have ever happened in my career happened to me today – but I really didn’t think that my 19 pounds would win it. Lewis Smith Lake is one of my favorite lakes in the world to fish, and to come down here and get the win is just the best.”

The top 10 pros finished the tournament:

               1st:          Dave Lefebre, Erie, Pa., 20 bass, 65-5, $125,000
               2nd:         Clark Wendlandt, Leander, Texas, 20 bass, 63-7, $30,000
               3th:          Jason Reyes, Huffman, Texas, 20 bass, 62-4, $25,000
               4th:          Tracy Adams, Wilkesboro, N.C., 20 bass, 61-3, $20,000
               5th:          Scott Martin, Clewiston, Fla., 20 bass, 60-12, $19,000
6th:          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 20 bass, 59-10, $18,000
               7th:          Zack Birge, Blanchard, Okla., 19 bass, 59-10, $17,000
8th:          Drew Benton, Panama City, Fla., 20 bass, 57-14, $16,000
               9th:          Clayton Batts, Macon, Ga., 17 bass, 50-15, $15,000
               10th:        John Cox, Debary, Fla., 15 bass, 45-15, $14,000

A complete list of results can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Overall there were 41 bass weighing 105 pounds, 9 ounces caught by pros Sunday. Seven professionals weighed in five-bass limits.

Pro John Cox of Debary, Florida was involved in a single-boat accident on Lewis Smith Lake shortly before noon on Sunday. Cox voluntarily decided to end his day early and not weigh in at the final day weigh-in. Cox decided to seek medical attention upon his return to the ramp. While shook up, Cox has been medically cleared and will compete in the next FLW Tour event at Beaver Lake next month. Cox finished the event in 10th place with 15 bass weighing 45 pounds, 15 ounces and earned $14,000.

Brad Roberts of Faubush, Kentucky, won the co-angler division and $20,000 Friday with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 32 pounds, 1 ounce, followed by hometown angler Todd Lee of Jasper, Alabama, in second place with 10 bass weighing 26 pounds, 12 ounces worth $7,500.

In addition to casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division, anglers were also competing for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2015 Forrest Wood Cup will be in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 20-23 on Lake Ouachita and is hosted by Visit Hot Springs. The Forrest Wood Cup Champion could win as much as $500,000 – professional bass-fishing’s richest prize.

Coverage of the Lewis Smith Lake tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) October 5 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. EST when Season 20 of “FLW” returns this fall. The Emmy-nominated "FLW" television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

The Walmart FLW Tour stop on Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude was hosted by Walker County Chamber of Commerce. It was the second of six regular-season events in the FLW Tour’s 2015 season. The third Walmart FLW Tour event of 2015 will be held at Beaver Lake, April 23-26 in Rogers, Arkansas, and is presented by Rayovac. The event will be hosted by the Rogers Convention & Visitors Bureau. Boats will launch from Prairie Creek Park Marina in Rogers, Arkansas. For a complete schedule, visit FLWFishing.com.

Western Carolina University Wins College Series Eastern Regional

Three patterns helped Western Carolina University prevail despite adverse weather conditions and a competitive field in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops. Austin Neary and Alex Frazier targeted spawning fish while also fishing nearby docks and rocks with dropshots and jerkbaits to bring in a three-day total of 42 pounds, 6 ounces and take the Eastern Regional title.

“All of our areas setup up for all three patterns,” Neary said. “It would be like a windy marina, so we could drop shot and jerkbait and then catch spawners off bed.”

As practice for the Eastern Regional came to a close, fish flooded the banks in an attempt to find a mate and make a bed to spawn. The first day of competition on Thursday saw partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures and the spawn and dock bite were on. The second day, Friday, brought a nasty cold front to the area and the jerkbait bite picked up with a few spawners still being picked off. Then on the final day Saturday the temperatures dropped to the 30s, and it took all three patterns for Western Carolina to pull off the win.

After B.A.S.S. College Tournament Manager Hank Weldon noted the excitement that Neary exhibited when coming to the stage and mentioned Frazier must be the calmer of the two, Frazier stated, “I could probably run through a brick wall right now.”

The excitement was evident from both Neary and Frazier as the two took the Eastern Regional in Frazier’s first at bat and what would have been Neary’s final college event had they not qualified for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship with their win.

“Financially, I had already decided I wouldn’t be able to make it to the Wild Card, so this was it for me,” Neary said of the June event that will qualify more college teams for the National Championship.

Bother and sister Chelsey and Kristopher Queen of Bethel University finished second in the event, bringing in 40 pounds, 11 ounces over the course of three days.

“I’m excited we’re going to the National Championship,” Chelsey said. “I hate we lost out to these guys, but I want to congratulate them. But I guarantee you nobody had more fun than we did out on the water”

The Queens are the first brother-sister team to ever qualify for the National Championship.

Finishing third and also qualifying for the National Championship were Day 2 leaders from Appalachian State University, Kelly Johnson and Jeremy Gilley, who brought in 39-14 for three days.

The remainder of the Top 17 teams from the Eastern Regional will also move on to the National Championship to be held later this summer on a body of water to be announced within the next few weeks.

The Livingston Lures Leader award at the Eastern Regional went to Appalachian State University’s Johnson and Gilley for leading on Day 2.

Cole Blythe’s 6-pound, 10-ounce big bass from Day 1 earning University of North Carolina-Charlotte the Carhartt Big Bass honors for the event.

UNCC’s Blythe and John Auten also won the Bass Pro Nitro Big Bag award for the event with their Day 1 single-day weight of 16 pounds, 12 ounces.

Flw Announces International Sanctioning

Named after the founder of Ranger Boats, Forrest L. Wood, FLW introduced its Fishing League Worldwide tagline last year to better reflect its status as the world’s largest tournament fishing organization. Today FLW expanded its presence on the world stage yet again with the introduction of a sanctioning program allowing international partners to license the iconic brand and run FLW tournaments abroad.
Walmart FLW Tour pro Jeff Gustafson of Keewatin, Ontario, will now be able to fish FLW sanctioned-tournaments on his home waters in Canada. (Garrick Dixon/FLW)

Each partner country will run a series of FLW tournaments that advance anglers, who are citizens of the host country, to a new international division at the Rayovac FLW Series Championship beginning in 2016. The highest finisher among countries represented in the international division will then advance to the Forrest Wood Cup, making it the sport’s only true world championship.

“We’ve had a significant international following for years thanks to our worldwide television distribution and the appeal of FLW Fantasy Fishing,” said Trisha Blake, FLW President of Marketing. “Now with dedicated FLW bass tournaments in partner countries we’ve realized our goal of being a truly worldwide organization in terms of both our fan base and competitors. FLW stands alone in providing the very best bass anglers from around the world with an outlet for their competitive ambitions by establishing a clear qualifying path to the Forrest Wood Cup and the sport’s biggest payday.”

Canada has already signed on as FLW’s first partner under the new program and is set to host an FLW tournament in 2015 with at least three events slated in Canada for 2016.

“This is a game changer for Canadian bass anglers,” said Cory Banford, co-owner of the Shootout Series and FLW’s exclusive partner in Canada. “We’ve been very successful with our Shootout Series tournaments over the years, but the opportunity to fish in our home country and qualify for the Rayovac FLW Series Championship and ultimately the Forrest Wood Cup is a life-changing opportunity for Canadian bass anglers.”

Two pros and two co-anglers will represent Canada in the international division at the 2016 Rayovac FLW Series Championship.

“More than money and advancement to the Forrest Wood Cup will be on the line at the 2016 Rayovac FLW Series Championship,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW President of Operations. “With competitors from around the world advancing, anglers are going to be fishing for national pride.”

Additional FLW qualifying tournaments in other countries are forthcoming. Watch FLWFishing.com for details.

Nominations Sought For High School All-American Fishing Team

With the explosive growth of high school bass fishing tournaments, young athletes are making a name for themselves in an organized sport quite different from traditional games like football, baseball and basketball.

Now there’s a program that offers national recognition for outstanding young anglers, just as there is in each of the “stick-and-ball” sports.

B.A.S.S. — the world’s largest fishing organization — today announced creation of the Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team, which honors the most successful competitive bass anglers in the country.

“Our goal is to provide skilled young anglers with the rewards and recognition they deserve,” said Hank Weldon, manager of B.A.S.S.’s high school and college fishing programs. “In addition, we are offering them an opportunity to demonstrate their fishing abilities on a national stage.”

To be considered for inclusion on the Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team, a student must be nominated by a parent, coach, teacher or other school official. Students currently enrolled in grades 10-12 with a current-year grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible. Judges will select up to two student anglers in each state. These All-State Fishing Team members become semifinalists in the selection of the 12-member All-American Team. Criteria include success in high school fishing tournaments and involvement in conservation efforts and other community service activities.

The 12 All-Americans will compete in a one-day Bassmaster All-American High School Tournament to be held in conjunction with the 2015 BASSfest event — one of nine Bassmaster Elite Series bass tournaments being held this year. Elite Series anglers will serve as “coaches” for the student anglers in the one-day tournament on Lake Barkley, Tennessee, June 6, 2015. The high school standouts will be honored before the weigh-in crowd at BASSfest, and each will be profiled in Bassmaster Magazine, read monthly by 3.2 million people.

“By focusing a national spotlight on high school students who excel at bass fishing, it’s our hope that more boys and girls will be attracted to the sport of fishing and introduced to a love of the outdoors,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “In attending some of our own Costa Bassmaster High School tournaments, I’ve been amazed at the enthusiasm, fishing ability and character our young anglers have displayed. There’s no doubt some will go on to become Bassmaster Elite Series champions.”

Akin noted that all students who compete in high school fishing events are eligible, regardless of whether they are affiliated with B.A.S.S. or another fishing organization.

Notices have been sent to youth fishing directors of the B.A.S.S. Nation and other organizations, as well as leaders of state high school fishing programs. Adults can nominate students by filling out an online form at http://www.bassmaster.com/blogs/high-school-blog/all-american.  Nominations must be submitted before midnight April 15.

A panel of judges will review the applications and select the High School All-American Fishing Team.

Drew Benton leads FLW Tourney on Lewis Smith LAKE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

FLW Tour pro angler Drew Benton of Panama City, Florida, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Thursday weighing 20 pounds, 12 ounces to jump to the top of the leaderboard at the Walmart FLW Tour at Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude. Benton will begin day two with a slim 1-pound, 3-ounce lead in the four-day event, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County, that features 154 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I went out today and fished the way that I love to fish and that’s by looking at them,” said Benton, who was the 2013 FLW Tour Rookie of the Year. “I had around 25 fish marked on beds that I had found during practice and I caught the biggest five that I had marked today.

“I wanted to sight fish all day, but that wind got up,” Benton continued. “All of these fish are bedding really deep, so when the wind gets going you can’t see them. So, I was only able to catch them off of beds for the first hour. Then I just went fishing and tried to look for more.”

Benton said that he was able to cull twice, upgrading two of his bed fish with larger bass that came on an unnamed topwater bait around laydowns. He estimated that he caught around 20 keepers throughout the day, and his five-bass limit consisted of two spotted bass and three largemouth.

“I still have fish marked, and I was able to find a few more today,” Benton said. “I should be able to catch five pretty quickly off the beds in the morning, but they’re not going to weigh much. I’ve got some spots out deep where I know that I can catch them, and I’ve had some success on a pattern with a Bagley crankbait. I’m confident that I can catch at least another 12 to 14 pounds tomorrow.”

Cold front could change bedding fish strategy for ABT North tournament on Neely Henry

The biggest question facing anglers in the Alabama Bass Trail North Division tournament on Lake Neely Henry this weekend is: what is the cold front going to do to the fishing?

“The high has been in the 70s all week, but we've got a little rain coming Thursday and Friday the high will be in the high 50s and down to 32-33 degrees at night,” said Josh Bragg who, with his teammate Joe Hartley, leads the North Division points standings after one tournament.

Bragg and Hartley weighed in a five-fish limit at 28.94 pounds, including the big fish of the tournament at 8.05 pounds, to win the first North Division tournament of the year Feb. 28 on Lake Guntersville.

The cold front moving in “could push the fish back off that moved up during the warm weather we have had this week,” Bragg said. That could present a problem for anglers who have their mind set on fish for bass on the beds, he said, but those fish are still catchable.

“A lot of big largemouths are trying to move up, getting ready to spawn,” Bragg said. “I still believe the tournament will be won shallow. It could be just a little bit tougher bite with that cold front.”

Bragg said the bass “are so full of eggs they are about to pop. They are in transition up to the bank. A lot will be caught in the dead grass and on shallow wood. ”

The front should give anglers a good reason to look for something a little different in practice.

“You are going to have to practice for the cold front, maybe try to find some fish that have staged and are ready to move shallow, not put all your bets on the fish that have already moved in shallow.”

Even with the cold front, the tournament Saturday 'is shaping up to be another heavy weight tournament like it was last year,” he said,

“I fished Logan Martin Lake, which is right below Neely Henry, Saturday and had 17 pounds and it took 23 pounds to win. A lot of the fish I caught down there were ready to pop. I think it would be busting wide open this weekend if not for that cold front.”

Bragg said he plans to practice Wednesday and Thursday and will try to develop a one-two punch for the tournament.

“I'll be looking for fish up on the banks and some right off the banks, staging and getting ready to go up,” he said.

Bragg concentrated on spotted bass in the ABT North Division tournament on Neely Henry last year and was on some really good spotted bass during practice, but only managed 12 1/2 to 13 pounds in the tournament, while the anglers who fished for largemouths “really smashed them.”

“That did not work out for me, so this year I have got a little different game plan,” he said.

Weather Could Make Fishing 'interesting' For Carhartt College Regional On Lake Norman

Fishing is good right now, but things could get really interesting by the end of the week for the college anglers fishing in the Carhartt Eastern B.A.S.S. Conference Regional on Lake Norman, according to a University of North Carolina-Charlotte team member who hopes to score big on his home lake.

“The weather could play a big part in the tournament,” said Andrew Helms, UNCC Junior from Monroe, N.C. “They are calling for rain towards the end of the week and that could change things up a little bit.”

Not to mention a drastic drop in local temperatures from spring-like high 70s on Thursday, the first day of the tournament, to a high in the low 50s and overnight temperatures below freezing by the last day of the tournament on Saturday.

“But, right now the fish are biting good,” said Helms, who teamed with senior Jake Whitaker of Fairview, N.C., to win the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship on Georgia's Lake Chatuge last August and followed that title by winning the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Classic on Lake Keowee Feb. 22 in conjunction with the Bassmaster Classic which was held on Lake Hartwell.

“We got to weigh in before the pros on the biggest stage in bass fishing,” Helms said. “This was huge for us as there were thousands in attendance and also many more watching live online.”

While the weather may play a role, the lake itself will probably play a larger role because of the variations in temperatures in different parts of the lake due to the nuclear facilities there, Helms said.

“Some parts of the lake are warmer than other parts. There are some fish wanting to get on the bed, some fish already on the bed, and some fish that are nowhere close to the bed,” he said. “I think you can do whatever suits you best because there are so many different options, so many ways to catch fish.”

Helms said the UNCC Bass Rats have 10 teams entered in the Carhartt Regional on Lake Norman.

“We hope to do well in the tournament, especially with it being so close to home. We think we have a good chance of making a good showing for our school.”

David Williams Re-Caps Bassmaster Elite Series Event #1 On The Sabine River

New for 2015 on Anglerschannel.com is full Elite Series Tournament re-caps from local angler David Williams. David is fishing the Elite Series for the 1st time ever this year and had a great start to the 2015 season down on the Sabine River in Texas, even though Day 1 was a wash. Here is his report and look for many more of these as we move through the season:

Day one of practice I found my best area about an hour south of the launch. It was just a shallow grass filled pond that had some clear water in it and it was full of fish. The second day of practice I practiced pretty close to the launch area. I found a pretty good area but it was getting lots of pressure. On day 3 Of practice I went back south but was never able to expand on my day 1 area. Day 1 of the event we had a 2 hour fog delay so I was gonna start close in the one area I found because I was in the 1st flight and I arrived at my 1st stop and Rick Clunn beat me to it so I decided to make the long run south and I didn't make it far and I had a mechanical issue that kept me from making it so I ended up practicing on the first day of the event. I only managed to catch 1 keeper that weighed 2.6 and I found myself in 94th place! I came and got my boat fixed. After a 3 hour fog delay on Day 2 I made the run south to my best area. I caught 5 good fish that went 13.5 lbs. on a Reaction innovation skinny dipper and had the biggest bag of day 2! Moved from 94th to 24th place and made the cut! Day 3 only a 20 min fog delay and I got to run back to my area down south and in a flooding rain I caught another 5 fish limit that went 10.11 lbs. on the swimbait and caught some on a spinnerbait and finished up in 16th place. Only regret was not getting to fish my area on day 1. Good start to the season. Looking forward to Guntersville in 2 weeks!

Clarks Hill could produce biggest bass of Oakley Big Bass Series again

“I think they said last year Clarks Hill was where they had the most big fish turned in and I think you are going to see the same thing this week,” said local tournament angler Ray Diamond describing the fishing in Clarks Hill Lake a few days before the Oakley Big Bass Tour's Georgia Big Bass Classic.

“Fishing at Clarks Hill is excellent,” said Diamond who fishes tournaments and for fun almost every weekend, plus some weekdays. “The water is nice and high, and it's warming up fast.”

And that has the bass moving towards the banks, Diamond said.

“They are starting to show up close to the bank and the water is clear so you can see them. If you like fishing for bedding fish, you will be on the money this weekend, said” Diamond who noted that an angler weighed in a bass over 9 pounds in a tournament on the lake last weekend.

“That fish might have won the boat for this Oakley tournament,” he said. “Those big females are coming in and they are full of eggs. There's a real chance to catch a trophy bass in Clarks Hill right now.”

But, bedding fish are not the only game on the lake, he added.

“In different parts of the lake you have different temperatures. Areas with stained water warm a little quicker. But everything is going towards the banks. You have fish coming out of deep water, either staging up on points or moving into the creek channels. Where the water is already in the 60s, the fish have begun to move on the beds. Everything is just real good right now,” Diamond said.

The Oakley Big Bass Tournament has a guaranteed purse of $36,750 with hourly paybacks. The heaviest bass each hour wins $1,000, 2nd $500, 3rd $300, 4th $250, 5th $200, 6th $150, 7th $125 and 8th $100. Weigh-in times at Wildwood Park are 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-12 p.m., 12-1 p.m., 1-2 p.m., and 2-3 p.m.

Whoever catches the biggest bass of the tournament will trailer home a 2015 Nitro Z7 with a Mercury 150Hp ProXS motor, valued at $30,000.

Gene Parker finished second with 5 fish weighing 19.83 pounds. Gene was bed fishing on the lower part and caught his fish on a Brush Hog rigged on a shakey head  and a pig and jig. Gene earned $504 with second place and the option pot.

The big fish was caught by Dean Chapman on a jig at the lower part of the lake. The 8.32 pound largemouth took big fish for the day and stands as the D-96 big fish of the 2015 season. If it holds Dean will win the ALX IKOS Series rod. Today Dean won the $135 big fish pot.

27 anglers fished this Lake Murray qualifying tournament. It was another day of light rain from beginning to end. It started out at 58 degrees and ended with the 3pm weigh-in at 61 degrees with a light wind out of the SW. Water temperature was in the high 50’s and low 60’s. Water was clear on the main lake and stained in the backs of creeks and rivers.

Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail No. 1 Results 3/8/15 - Shearon Harris

Teaser image:

This tournament was the makeup for the February 28th event that was postponed due to the snow & icy weather
that came down upon us in a right big way! We did get a break in the weather this day, but it was still cold in the
morning but pretty nice towards days end.
It was about 35 degrees that morning and around 55 that afternoon with very light winds. Water temps ranged
from 40 to 47 depending on the area fished and water was muddy in certain areas after the rain earlier in the
week. Out of 56 teams fishing only 14 actually weighed in a bass. Water temps were just too cold to get a good
bite with all the unstable weather we have had this year so far. It will get better, however.
Somehow, Tony Woodard & Scott Smith stumbled across 2 bass weighing a total of 11.57 lbs. and they were the
only team to weigh in 2 fish. This veteran team won 1st place and 1st place TWT for a total of $2,077 in prize
money. Dave Murdock & Tony Fofi took 2nd place with 1 fish weighing 9.46 lbs. They also won the Big Fish
Award and 2nd Place TWT for a grand total of $1,777. 2nd Place Big Fish (8.37 lbs.) was caught by the team of
Mike Sipple & Curtis Vaughn netting them $318 in prize money.
Only 15 fish were weighed in for a total of 92 pounds for an average of 6.13 lbs. each. There were a few bass
caught that could not be weighed in because of the slot limit rule on Harris.
I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support this trail. Coming up Saturday
March 21st will be the
Hyco Lake Open and Sunday March 22nd will be the make-up Cashion Fishing Rods
Spring Team Bass Mini Trail Q#1 at Shearon Harris.
The PBC Q#2 at Jordan Lake scheduled for March 14th
was postponed and rescheduled for Sunday March 29th. This was the only date I could find that would work best
for our schedule due to all the tournaments in the area.

Cashion Fishing Rods Spring Team Bass Mini Trail Qualifier #2 Results 03/07/15 - Jordan Lake

The 2015 Cashion Fishing Rods Spring Team Bass Mini Trail finally got off the ground this Saturday at Jordan!
Our February 21st Qualifier #1 was rescheduled to Sunday, March 28th at Shearon Harris because of the snow
& ice. We got a break today but it was frigid this morning with temps around 22 degrees and it didn't warm up
much that afternoon. The winds were not too bad and that helped a little. Water temps averaged from 40 to 44.
Needless to say, the water temps along with cold rains never helped the bite. Out of 22 teams participating only
2 bass were weighed in. But, they were some profitable bass!!!
Randy Fisher & Donnie Lowe caught 1 bass weighing 3.41 lbs taking 1st Place. They also won 1st Place Big
Fish & their split of $250 from 3rd & 4th place money giving them a grand total of $1,358 !! 2nd Place team was
Tony Woodard & Scott Smith with 1 bass weighing 2.33 lbs. They also won 2nd Place Big Fish, 1st & 2nd TWT
and their cut of the 3rd & 4th place money for a total of $1,292 !!
2 bass were weighed in for a total of 5.74 pounds. Crazy!!!
I want to thank Cashion Fishing Rods and all the anglers that participated. Our next tournament will be the

Hite Says Heavy Rains Will Make Elite On Sabine River 'challenging,' But Fishing Should Be Improved

Elite Series Angler and Bassmaster Classic Champion Davy Hite

Record crowds are expected at the weigh-ins for the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on the Sabine River at Orange, Texas, this week – the kick-off for the 2015 Elite Series schedule – but the fishing might be another story, said veteran B.A.S.S. pro Davy Hite.

Heavy rains along the river system are going to make the fishing “challenging,” said Hite, who won the 1999 Bassmaster Classic in the Louisiana Delta east of the Sabine drainage, a water system somewhat similar to the backwater sloughs and log-jammed bayous along the Sabine.

“The river is way up. There has been a lot of rain here – and a lot of rain north of here. They have nine flood gates open at Toledo Bend and that water is coming here. It's the same at Sam Rayburn. There's just a lot of water coming out of those two lakes.”

That said, Hite believes the fishing will actually be better this week than it was in 2013, the only other time the Elite Series has come to the Sabine. That’s because it's been a while between hurricanes, he said.

“Hurricanes come through here every 5 to 10 years and that kills a lot of the freshwater fish,” Hite said, noting that the saltwater intrusion not only kills bass, but a lot of the forage fish the bass feed on.

“The longer these bass have been between hurricanes the larger they get and the better the population gets. It's real similar to the Louisiana Delta where I won the Classic,” he said. “If the hurricanes did not have such an impact on the freshwater fish there would be world records here. It is just such a food factory.”

Since it has been a while between hurricanes, Hite said he believes the fish will be bigger and there will be more of them to fish for this week – in spite of the high water from all the rains.

And, in spite of the high water, the river is a great fishery and Orange is a great town to hold an Elite tournament, he said.

“When we were here two years ago it was the greatest crowd ever at an Elite event, so it's going to be great to kick off a new season with 9,000 or 10,000 or more at the weigh-ins.”

When the Elite Series last visited Orange in March 2013, records were shattered with 33,650 people attending the event over four days. The mark smashed the previous attendance record of 17,920, set in 2011 in Decatur, Ala., by a whopping 15,730 fans. The 2013 event in Orange also broke the record for single-day attendance at an Elite Series event, with 14,950 fans turning out for the Saturday weigh-in. The previous record was 14,050 at the Decatur event in 2011.

Anglers Choice Moves To High Rock For Second Tournament Of New Single-Division Season

Winners on Smith Mountain Mar 7 were Eric Catlett & Dallas Cole with 5 Fish Weighing 18.51lbs

The Anglers Choice Invitational Tournament Trail moves to High Rock Lake near Lexington, N.C, Saturday for the second tournament of the 2015 season under the new single-division, two classics format.

“When we joined the B.A.S.S. Toyota Team Championship Series we were only recognized as one trail by them,” explained tournament director Chris Lucas. “Basically, we had to have one points system, so we don't call it the North Carolina Division and Virginia Division anymore. The guys who fish on Saturday and the guys who fish on Sunday, all the points go to the same standings.”

Lucas said the schedule is set up so there are two tournaments in Virginia, which are held on Smith Mountain Lake, and two tournaments in the Carolinas where the dealerships are located – in Lexington and Spindale – one on High Rock and one on Lake Hickory.”

The other tournaments are held on the border, with two double-tournament weekends on Kerr Reservoir, he noted.

“An angler can make one trip, fish Saturday and Sunday and get two qualifiers in while saving money. That Kerr tournament weekend will be our biggest draw of the year,” Lucas said.

And, he added, anglers who plan to fish the Kerr tournaments need to get registered as soon as possible.

“We are already up to 780 to 80 on both of those tournaments and that is a month away. If you are planning on fishing that tournament you might want to go ahead and get registered,” Lucas said.

While 135 boats showed up for the Smith Mountain tournament March 8 “despite a winter storm , cold temperatures and frozen lake conditions,” Lucas said he expects 780 to 80 boats to compete in Saturday's tournament on High Rock under much more favorable conditions.

“The High Rock Tournament is scheduled to run 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but we will probably run it from 7:30 to 3:30 or 4 p.m. because it is still dark at 7 a.m.,” he said. “We'll blast off at good light.”

Lucas said he had not heard any definite reports on fishing at High Rock, but the word is the lake is a little muddy, but the water is warming fast with the warmer temperatures in the last few days.

“I think people will be able to catch fish about however they want to,” he said.

The remaining Anglers Choice Tournament schedule includes: March 21, High Rock Lake; April 18 and 19, Kerr Reservoir; May 2, Smith Mountain Lake; May 23, Lake Hickory; June 6 and 7, Kerr Reservoir; with the Ranger Classic Oct. 3-4 on Kerr Lake and the Triton Classic Oct. 17-18 on High Rock Lake.

Huge entry, outstanding fishing expected for Carolinas Bass Challenge NC Division on Wylie

A lot of boats are expected for the Carolinas Bass Challenge North Carolina Division tournament on Lake Wylie Saturday and the fishing should be outstanding, said tournament director Brett Collins.

“Lake Wylie is usually one of our best draws, with around 180 boats usually,” said Collins who noted that registrations were up to more than 150 on Tuesday evening, more than 24 hours before the cut-off at midnight Wednesday. “We have teams from Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland fishing the NC CBC Division,” Collins said.

Fishing is heating up at just the right time for the tournament, too, he added.

“In the past few weeks as much as 24 pounds has won local events on the lake. The weather is much improved this week, though some fish will still be deep. But if the rain comes later in the week and puts some color in the water this could be our best Wylie event yet as far as weights,” Collins said.

He noted that Thomas Hardwick and Tommy Williams who won the inaugural 2015 NC Division tournament on Lake Norman Feb. 14 will be looking to extend their hold on the top spot in the points standings – and the odds could be in their favor. “Lake Wylie is their home lake,” Collins said.

Hardwick and Williams topped the 184-boat field on Lake Norman with a five-fish limit at 18.75 pounds, including the tournament big fish at 6.4 pounds, earning a total of $15,500 for the day. Their win money included $3,000 in Skeeter Real Money and $2,500 as the highest finishing Skeeter in the tournament.

The CBC North Carolina Division schedule includes: Lake Wylie March 21, Jordan Lake April 4, Lake Hickory May 9 and then to High Rock Lake for a double-points tournament June 20. The North Carolina State Championship will be held Oct. 10, with the CBC Classic Oct. 23-24 on Clarks Hill Lake out of Wildwood Park.

The CBC operates a full tournament schedule in South Carolina and North Carolina with outstanding payback and rewards. First place in every CBC tournament is guaranteed a minimum of $8,000, more depending on the number of entries, Collins said. The big fish winner in each tournament earns a check for $1,000 and there is a $5,000 Skeeter Bonus for each tournament for registered owners of Skeeter Boats.

“The Skeeter Bonus is split three ways, $2,500 for the highest finishing Skeeter, $1,500 for the second highest finishing Skeeter and $1,000 for the third highest finishing Skeeter,” Collins said.

Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, Foothills Marine Center in Morganton, N.C., Marshall's Marine Center in Lake City, S.C., and Palmetto Marine Center in Greenville, S.C., teamed up to support the 2015 Carolinas Bass Challenge.

The top teams of the 2015 South Carolina and North Carolina State Championships will both win a Skeeter TZX190/150 with a Yamaha 150. A ZX200/200 Yamaha SHO will be awarded to the winning team in the 2014 CBC Classic.

The big payouts in both the state qualifying tournaments, the state championships and the CBC Classic are drawing a lot of attention from anglers all over, Collins said.

Bishop Wins Bassmaster Open On Ross Barnett

Teaser image:

Gene Bishop of Ridgeland, Miss., wins the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open #1 presented by Allstate held on Ross Barnett Reservoir, Miss. Bishop brought 21 pounds to Saturday's weigh-in giving him a three-day total weight of 55 pounds, 14 ounces.

RIDGELAND, Miss. — Some of the top bass pros in the nation crashed and burned after making epic catches during the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open presented by Allstate at Ross Barnett Reservoir. Gene Bishop of Ridgeland, Miss., stumbled the first day with less than 9 pounds, only to rocket to the winner’s circle.

Bishop’s stunning 26-pound, 1-ounce limit the second day vaulted him to the lead. He slammed the door on the other anglers who made the Top 12 cut today with a limit that weighed 21 pounds for a total of 55 pounds, 14 ounces.

Local knowledge worked for and against Bishop during the tournament. He stumbled the first day by fishing one of his offshore sweet spots with a Carolina rig.

On the following two days, he fished shallow pad stems that produced his heavy limits.

“I was fishing a Barnett Special,” Bishop said. “Everybody around here knows about it.”

The Barnett Special is an 8-inch Junebug Zoom Lizard. He Texas rigged it with a 4/0 hook and a 1/4 ounce bullet sinker.

“I was barely crawling it back over the pad stems lying on the bottom in 2 feet of water,” Bishop said.

If Bishop fishes the final two Central Opens this year, his Ross Barnett victory will earn him a ticket to the 2016 Bassmaster Classic at Oklahoma’s Grand Lake.

Meanwhile, Bishop is happy to pocket $8,405 and take possession of a Triton 19TrX rigged with a Mercury 200 Pro XS and prop, a Triton tandem axle trailer, a MotorGuide X3 trolling motor and a Lowrance Elite 5 graph.

Jay Brainard of Vinita, Okla., fishing his first Bassmaster Open at age 28, finished a close second with 54 pounds, 8 ounces. While all the other anglers that made the Top 12 cut plied shallow pad stems and reeds, Brainard skipped a 3/8-ounce Strike King spinnerbait under boat docks.

He swapped the original No. 4 blade for a bigger No. 4 1/2 gold blade and slow-rolled the spinnerbait 4 to 5 feet deep.

“If I got a hard strike I couldn’t hook them,” Brainard said. “Even a trailer hook didn’t help. I missed a lot of fish.”

The ones that stayed hooked felt like heavy weight when they inhaled the spinnerbait, he added.

“I love skipping and flipping docks,” Brainard said. “It’s my favorite thing to do.”
Doing his favorite thing earned Brainard $19,963 and 199 points toward qualifying for the Bassmaster Elite Series.

Oklahoma Elite Series pro Tommy Biffle collected $14,972 for nabbing third place with 52 pounds, 9 ounces. Most anglers would have been tickled with that. However, Biffle had his heart set on winning at Ross Barnett and punching his ticket early to the 2016 Classic on a lake that he knows well.

Although Biffle is famous for working his magic with a Quantum flippin’ stick, he caught his bass this time around with casting presentations. His primary bait was a Carolina rigged Gene Larew Biffle-O Lizard, which he dragged through pad stems.

“I just couldn’t catch them flippin’ in practice,” Biffle said. “They weren’t on the bank.”

On the final day, Biffle moved closer to the bank to catch his 21-pound, 10-ounce limit. The water had warmed to 65 degrees, and the bass were more accommodating near the shoreline than they had been in practice.

Bill Mccoun of Amarillo, Texas, who will be 70 years old in a few months, was the first co-angler to weigh in today. His three-day total of 25 pounds, 7 ounces was never bested.

Mccoun literally sweated out the weigh-in while sitting in the hot seat in bright, warm sunlight. Sunshine was a rare commodity this week. When he accepted his trophy, Mccoun suggested that an air conditioner be installed in the hot seat corner.

After thanking his wife of 50 years, Mccoun praised the pro partners he had fished with throughout the three-day event. He also recommended that anyone that has thought about fishing a Bassmaster Open should do so.

“My partner the first day was Wes Rogers,” Mccoun said. “He gave me the baits that I caught all my fish with. After he caught his limit, he stayed on his fish until I caught mine.”

That bait was a Texas rigged Zoom Brush Hog.

“You had to drag it,” Mccoun said. “They didn’t want it hopping.”

Besides the hefty trophy that Mccoun carried off the stage, he was given the keys to a brand new Triton 179 TrX with a Mercury 115 Pro XS and prop, a Triton single axle trailer, a MotorGuide X3 trolling motor and a Lowrance Mark 5 graph.

Arkansas Elite Series pro Kevin Short weighed an 8-pounder on the first day of the Ross Barnett Open. It proved to be the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass, which was worth $750.

The Bass Pro Shops Big Bass on the co-angler side was a 7-pound, 3-ounce largemouth caught by Gary Sullivan of Woodson, Texas. That heavyweight earned Sullivan $250.
Luke Clausen, a pro from Otis Orchards, Wash., won the $250 Allstate Good Hands, Great Day award for climbing the most points from Day 1 to Day 2.

Joel Ross from of Brandon, Miss., won the Allstate Good Hands, Great Day co-angler award of $150 for leapfrogging from 159th to 43rd place on Day 2.

The Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for the pro side goes to Bishop; Mccaskill will receive a Livingston Lures gift pack valued at $250 for the co-angler side.

Pair Of 7Th-Graders Win 119-Boat Bassmaster High School Open On Toledo Bend

MANY, La. — Logan O’Dell and Blaine Marks of Buna High School in Texas wanted badly to fish shallow during Sunday’s Costa Bassmaster High School Central Open on Toledo Bend Reservoir.

With spring finally in the air, they knew the lake’s giant largemouth would be making their way toward the shallows to spawn, and they wanted to go after them.

But every time they moved in, their team captain Brandon Marks forced them to back off — and his good coaching led to a five-bass limit that weighed a tournament-best 17 pounds, 12 ounces.

The big bag was just enough to help O’Dell and Marks past the Louisiana team of Nicholas Wiggins and Lane Possoit of Natchitoches Central High School, who placed second with 17-11.

“I called seven timeouts, and I said the same thing to them with every one of them,” Brandon Marks said. “We were fishing main-lake points, and they kept wanting to move in and fish the shallow grass. I kept telling them they needed to be fishing 10 to 12 feet of water because this little cool snap we’re having this weekend has backed the fish off a little bit.”

O’Dell and Marks caught their fish using Carolina rigged 6-inch Zoom lizards in gourd green. Their catch was anchored by a largemouth that weighed 7-11.

“We caught fish steadily throughout the day,” O’Dell said. “We actually culled two fish this afternoon that ended up putting us over the top.”

Despite their good day, they were surprised that 17-12 was enough.

“We really expected somebody to come in with 25 pounds,” Marks said. “We thought we probably had enough to get in the Top 5, but we didn’t expect to win it. It’s something I’ll remember forever.”

O’Dell and Marks earned a $500 check made out to their high school and an automatic berth into the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship. They also earned the right to fish with select Elite Series pros Saturday in Orange, Texas, as part of the High School Elite Experience presented by Costa.

Wiggins and Possoit also qualified for the National Championship and the Elite Experience, taking a little of the sting out of their 1-ounce loss. But they couldn’t help but think what might have been.

“I think we had maybe eight bites all day, and we caught five of them,” Wiggins said. “Our two smallest fish of the day weighed 2 pounds, 11 ounces. We know for sure those other bites would have culled, and all we needed was an ounce.”

For a brief moment, O’Dell’s 7-11 lunker ranked as the largest bass ever caught in a Bassmaster High School event, after eclipsing the previous record of 7-5. But the mark was shattered again during Sunday’s weigh-in when Logan Bourque and Conner Chappell brought an 8-8 largemouth to the scales.

A new feature of the high school events this year is the “Costa Moment,” awarded for a moving act of courage, kindness or courtesy identified on stage during the weigh-in.

The honor for this event went to Andrew Marcantel of Louisiana’s Sulphur High School. In a field packed with anglers wearing modern equipment, Marcantel was sporting the vintage Ranger Boats hat that belonged to his late grandfather, Jerry Rice.

“He passed away back in 2007, and I’ve been wearing it ever since,” Marcantel said. “If it ever blows off my head, I’ll have to go swimming for it. It means that much to me. He meant the world to me.”

In a field of 119 boats, the Top 17 teams earned a check and the Top 12 teams qualified for the National Championship.

Father-son tandom of Jeff and KJ Queen blew it out on Norman Sat with 21.50 Lbs, including a massive 8.72 Lb BF!! They beat out 140 other teams and go home with a new Ranger Z118 powered by an Evinrude E-Tec 150 provided by Denver Marine.

Team Queen wins the annual Jim Ledbetter Memorial Cancer Tournament on Norman

140 Teams turned out Saturday for what was another very successful tournament in honor of Jim Ledbetter. Lake Norman is fishing as well as it every has as the number of quality limits weighed in was really incredible. After finishing 2nd in 2014, the fatehr-son team of Jeff and KJ Queen brought a whopping 21.50 Lbs to the scales with one of the largest BF we've ever seen on Norman-8.72 Lbs!!! They had another 5 lb'er plus 3 solid spots to round out their limit. 2nd place team of Jason Wilson and Kelly Logan had a great day as well with 19.64, which would normally win on Normman, but not this day. For their big win, Team Queen went home with a brand new RANGER Z118 powered by an Evinrude 150 E-TEC, supplied by Denver Marine in Denver, NC. Skys were overcast most of the day with light rain until weigh-in and then it cleared up and was blue bird skys overlooking Norman late in the day. Congrats to the Queens on their big win and to all the anglers that came out and supported a truely great cause. Here is your top 10 (Full results at bottom) with pictures below:

Wacky Weather Wreaks Havoc On Leaderboard At Bassmaster Open On Ross Barnett

Teaser image:

Gene Bishop of Ridgeland, Miss., lead on Day 2 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open #1 presented by Allstate held on Ross Barnett Reservoir out of Ridgeland, Miss. Bishop brought 26 pounds, 1 ounce to the scales at Friday's weigh-in for a two-day total of 34-14.

Anglers competing in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open presented by Allstate at Ross Barnett were hit with a strong dose of March’s temperamental weather Friday.

The morning broke calm with light rain. By midday, 20-mph wind gusts were kicking up brutal waves with whitecaps.

The weather during the weigh-in was blustery and switched from substantial rainfall to sunshine with a rainbow and back to rain.

The leaderboard was even more volatile than the weather. Thursday, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike McClelland sacked 23 pounds, 5 ounces to claim the lead. Today he brought in only two bass and dropped to 13th place. He failed to make the cut to fish in the finals Saturday.

Kevin Short, another Elite pro, in second place Thursday with 22 pounds, 6 ounces, brought in a single keeper today and dropped to 31st place.

Gene Bishop, a local angler from Ridgeland, Miss., bagged a paltry 8 pounds, 13 ounces Thursday and crash landed way back in 83rd place. Today he found the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow.

As Bishop made his way to the weigh-in area today, he stopped often to let his heavy fish bag down and switch hands. By the time he got to the scales, he looked exhausted. When the scales registered 26 pounds, 1 ounce, Bishop looked more relieved than elated to be sitting in first place with 34-14.

“I’m a nervous wreck,” Bishop said to tournament director Chris Bowes.

Why did Bishop fare so poorly in the first round and so superbly today?

“Yesterday, I fished ‘history,’” Bishop said.

“History” was a ledge where he has sacked big limits in previous tournaments.

“Today, I fished conditions,” Bishop said.

The conditions told Bishop to fish shallow in 3 feet of water. He was about 75 yards from a community area that was being pounded by a few dozen other boats in the tournament.

“I stayed out a little deeper and intercepted the bass that were moving up,” Bishop said. “I was catching them before they could get to those boys.”

The most consistent angler on Ross Barnett’s second day was Jay Brainard. He was in third place after the first day with 22 pounds, 1 ounce. Brainard added a limit of 11-1  today, which bounced him up to second place with a total of 33-2.

“I got a lot of bites today, but they were hitting funny,” Brainard said. “I caught only five bass, and three of them came late in the day.”

Brainard feels confident he is on enough quality fish to win. The challenge is figuring out how to get a hook into the ones that strike.

Veteran Elite pro Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., sacked his second solid limit of the tournament to secure third place with a total of 30 pounds, 15 ounces. Shallow water is Biffle’s strong suit, so it’s no surprise that he is in the hunt to win at Ross Barnett.

It’s likely that Biffle is picking off bass with his trusty flippin’ rod, but he’s not talking. Fishing fans won’t hear the details until after the final weigh-in Saturday at 4 p.m. CT at Bass Pro Shops in Pearl, Miss.

The winner on the pro side will pocket $8,405 and the keys to a Triton 19TrX rigged with a Mercury 200 Pro XS and prop, a Triton tandem axle trailer, a MotorGuide X3 24-volt trolling motor and a Lowrance Elite 5 graph.

Jim Mccaskill of Brandon, Miss., leads the co-angler field with 20-12. If he hangs on for the victory tomorrow, he will be the owner of a Triton 179 TrX with a Mercury 115 Pro XS and prop, a Triton single axle trailer, a MotorGuide X3 12-volt trolling motor and a Lowrance Mark 5 graph.

Luke Clausen, a pro from Otis Orchards, Wash., won the $250 Allstate Good Hands, Great Day award for climbing the most points from Day 1 to Day 2. With Friday’s limit of 22-6, he vaulted from 139th place to seventh place.

Joel Ross from of Brandon, Miss., won the Allstate Good Hands, Great Day co-angler award of $150 for leapfrogging from 159th to 43rd place.

The Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for the pro side goes to Bishop; Mccaskill will receive a Livingston Lures gift pack valued at $250 for the co-angler side.

For Local Anglers Ledbetter Tournament More Than About Catching Fish

When Shane Linberger was a youngster who dreamed of becoming a professional bass angler he loved going to the local tackle shop in Denver, N.C., and listening to local fishing celebrity and television show host Jim Ledbetter talk fishing.

Now that he is grown, Lineberger is living that pro angler dream, fishing the B.A.S.S. Southern and Northern Opens the Carolina Bass Challenge tournaments and any other fishing tournament he can squeeze onto his calendar.

But there is one weekend every year when one special tournament takes precedence over everything – the annual Jim Ledbetter Memorial Bass Tournament on Lake Norman which raises money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Ledbetter himself was a victim of cancer and the V Foundation is named after legendary North Carolina State University basketbacll coach Jim Valvano, also a cancer victim.

“We love that tournament,” Lineberger said. “Even if I couldn't fish it I'd probably send money. I lost two of my grandparents to that mess (cancer).”

Entry fee for the tournament is $175 per team, which includes the Big Fish pot. The winning team will trailer home a new Ranger 118 AL boat with a 115 E-Tex Outboard. The top Adult and Child Team, the top Senior Citizen Team and the top Husband and Wife team will win $500 each.

Lineberger said fishing should be very good for the tournament this weekend.

“The fish are pulling up. They have been out there all winter, freezing to death, and now we are starting to get some warmer temperatures. The only thing is we will be on the back side of the moon,” he said.

“They are calling for rain which should dirty up the creeks and the dirtier water will definitely improve the crankbait bite, like the Speed Trap, and I think it will definitely improve the jig bite, too,” he said. “I think we will see some really good weights Saturday. I'd say between 18 and 20 pounds will win it.”

Persistent Rain A Double Whammy For Anglers In Bassmaster Central Open On Ross Barnett

Under normal circumstances fishing in the Bassmaster Central Open on Ross Barnett Reservoir would be fairly simple: The bass in the lake typically spawn in late March, which means prespawn bass should be moving shallow and eager to bite this time around.

But the weather this year has been anything but normal. Persistent rains will force changes in game plans in more ways than one, according to veteran pro Pete Ponds who lives just five miles from the Madison Launch site at Ridgeland, Miss.

“The problem is we are getting rain every day so we have increasing water coming down the river. With the really high water up north everything is pushing mud down into the main lake and that's going to make the bite a lot tougher than what we were expecting,” Ponds said. “The water temperature is in the low 50s and it's just muddy and high.”

And not expected to change for the tournament, he added.

“It's supposed to rain every day of the tournament – through Saturday at least. Friday thunderstorms are predicted, with highs in the upper 60s and lows in the 50s.”

But that's just half of the problem, he said.

“Ross Barnett doesn’t fluctuate a whole lot. With all the rain coming in it's going to force them to open the gates below the spillway and that is going to create current. That's going to change a lot of things for the tournament.”

Ponds said that while he thinks the Open will still be a pre-spawn tournament, a typical pre-spawn strategy might not be the best way to go in the tournament.

“Normally the locals here do the same thing every year, year after year, and they don't win these tournaments. The guy who is doing something completely different, somebody doing something unusual will win it – and it could be current-related.”

Plus, he added, because of the rainy weather preparation should go beyond just fishing strategy.

“Preparing for the weather is going to be as key as anything you are going to do. It will be very important to have the proper clothes and rain gear. That way you are not beat before you get on the water.”

Cabela's College Series Kicks Off 10Th Season With Record Numbers On Kentucky Lake

The Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Series kicks off its 10th year this weekend with a record number of college anglers from 24 states taking their spring break to fish in the Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash on Kentucky-Barkley Lakes.

“It's a really big bass tournament,” said Anthony Wright with Cabela's. “Right now 255 anglers have registered for the tournament.”

And, while they can't win money as college anglers, there is more than $20,000 in prizes that will be awarded to individual anglers, Wright said. There is also the element of fishing for school pride.

Wright said there will be four weigh-ins on Saturday and four weigh-ins on Sunday.

“Although there can be two anglers from a school in a boat, they don't weigh in as a team. Both can weigh fish, but they weigh in individually for prizes, and for school points,” he said. “The weigh-ins will be at 9 and 11 a.m., and 1 and 3 p.m. At the end of each day we hand out all the prizes for that day.”

Wright said the anglers should find the fishing very good this weekend.

“I had a report this morning. They had a tournament there Saturday and the winning weight was 31 pounds for five fish. There were several 15- to 18-pound sacks weighed in, too. That tells me the big fish are really starting to bite.”

Registration with dinner for the anglers for the tournament will be held at the Henry County Fairgrounds Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., he said.

“During the tournament we will feed them breakfast and lunch,” he added.

Registration is now open for the rest of the 2015 schedule: Collegiate Bass Fishing Open, April 17-19, Lake Chickamauga at Dayton,TN; Collegiate Bass Texas Shootout, April 25-26, Lake Texoma at Denison, TX; and the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Cabela's, May 20-22, Pickwick Lake at Florence, AL.
