Evers Takes Over Elite Series Tourney On St Lawrence
After catching 21 pounds, 3 ounces during Thursday’s opening round, Evers added five gorgeous smallmouth bass that weighed 22-9 Friday and jumped into the lead with a two-day total of 43-12.
His Friday catch, which was the largest of the day for the 107-angler field, gave him a solid cushion over second-place angler Skeet Reese (40-5) of California and third-place angler Josh Bertrand (39-12) of Arizona.
“I’ve only been getting about seven or eight bites a day these first two days,” Evers said. “But I’ve been getting good bites, and they’ve been coming early. I spent the second half of both days practicing and just trying to find more stuff like I’m doing.”
Evers said he was concerned coming into the event after locating only four bass on the second day of practice — a time by which he usually likes to have a big part of his game plan nailed down. He also said it could be a little nerve-racking going back out Saturday, knowing he doesn’t have a large number of fish located.
But his consistency in the first two rounds has put him in position to do something that’s never been done on the Bassmaster Elite Series. After winning BASSfest on Kentucky Lake last month, he could become the first angler to win back-to-back tournaments since the Elite Series was formed 10 years ago.
“That would be awesome, but there’s a lot of fishing left,” Evers said. “There’s just not a lot of fish in any one spot. So we’ll just have to see how it goes.”
Day 1 leader Shaw Grigsby proved just how unpredictable the fishing is on the river right now. After a tournament-best catch of 22-15 Thursday, Grigsby caught just two fish that weighed 3-13 Friday and missed the semifinal cut after falling all the way to 76th place.
Such collapses were common Friday, and they cleared a path for anglers like Reese and Bertrand to make a move.
After landing in ninth place with 20-8 Thursday, Reese caught 19-13 Friday and rose to second with 40-5. He’s one of the few anglers in the field who has been catching good numbers of bass.
“I caught a lot of fish today, probably 40 or better,” Reese said. “It was a fun day. Last time we were here, I didn’t make it to Saturday. So I’m glad to make the cut and get to go fishing again tomorrow.”
Like Evers, Bertrand said his bites were few and far between Friday. But he still managed five bass that weighed 20-11 and moved into third with 39-12.
“Luckily, out of the bites I got, I put them all in the boat — and they were good quality,” Bertrand said. “I’ve caught them really by ‘junk fishing.’”
Unlike the other anglers at the top of the leaderboard, Bertrand was open about the technique he’s using. He’s said he’s been using a drop-shot rig, and the fishing has been extremely slow.
“My two best fish today came from totally different depths,” Bertrand said. “One was up in 10 feet and one was down in 30. That’s sort of the way it’s working. There hasn’t been any flurry when you can catch several fish in a row.”
Alabama angler Aaron Martens caught 17-11 Friday and moved into 12th place with 37-3.That allowed him to maintain a slim lead over Arizona pro Dean Rojas in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings.
Rojas caught 18-3 and moved into 24th place with 34-9. With 501 points on the season, Rojas trails Martens by eight points in the AOY standings.
The field was trimmed to 50 after Friday’s round, with pros needing at least 30-8 to make the cut. Oklahoma angler Tommy Biffle was the last man in.
Those Top 50 anglers will leave Whittaker Park at 6:15 a.m. ET Saturday with the weigh-in scheduled back at the park at 3:15 p.m. Only the Top 12 anglers after Saturday will advance to Sunday’s championship round.

Professional Bass Fishing Forrest Wood Cup Set To Return To Lake Ouachita
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (July 30, 2015) – The Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of professional bass fishing, will return to Lake Ouachita and the Hot Springs, Arkansas, area August 20-23 to crown bass fishing’s top angler of 2015. Hosted by Visit Hot Springs and the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, the tournament will feature 50 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for the sport’s biggest awards – $500,000 cash in the pro division and $50,000 cash in the co-angler division.
“This is going to be a very exciting tournament,†said Scott Martin of Clewiston, Florida, the reigning FLW Tour Angler of the Year who claimed his Forrest Wood Cup victory on Lake Ouachita when FLW last visited back in 2011. “The Forrest Wood Cup is the fishing tournament that nobody forgets. I’ve had five other major victories in my career, and some people may remember them, but no one forgets the Forrest Wood Cup.â€
Martin said that multiple different patterns would be in play amongst competitors and that he expected the fishing to be even better than when he won in 2011.
“There are so many ways to catch fish this time of year on Lake Ouachita,†Martin continued. “Every time we visit, it seems like the field splits up pretty evenly – half of the anglers fish shallow while the other half opts to fish deep. You can really fish to your strengths. One factor that may be different this year, though, is the grass. There is more grass on Ouachita than we have seen in the past, and that could really add another dimension to this event. We’re also visiting the lake a little later in the year this time, so it’s hard to say exactly what pattern will be dominant.
“I think topwater baits, buzzbaits, walking baits and prop baits will all be dominant for the shallow-water anglers, as well as flipping jigs in the shallow cover,†Martin said. “The water levels are up right now, so flipping the heaver cover could be a really good pattern to get on. If I’m fishing out deep, I’m bringing all of my tackle – everything from drop-shot rigs, to 10-inch worms, to big crankbaits, big swimbaits and underspins.â€
Martin said that he expects anglers will need to catch at least 13 pounds a day in order to make the top-20 cut and fish the weekend, and he expects the winner to weigh in a four-day total right around 60 to 61 pounds.
“This tournament will change somebody’s life,†Martin went on to say. “All of the press and the prestige that comes from winning this event – it’s a game changer. This event is something that you will never forget.â€
Anglers will take off from the Brady Mountain Resort and Marina located at 4120 Brady Mountain Road in Royal, Arkansas, at 7 a.m. each morning at the Folger’s Morning Takeoff. Each days weigh-in will be held at Bank of the Ozarks Arena located at 134 Convention Blvd. in Hot Springs, Arkansas, beginning at 5 p.m.
Fans will be treated to the FLW Expo at the Hot Springs Convention Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. prior to the weigh-ins. The Expo includes games, activities and giveaways provided by more than 40 FLW sponsors, the opportunity to shop the latest tackle and outdoor gear from more than 100 exhibitors, Ranger boat simulators, a casting pond and a trout pond for children, as well as the opportunity to meet and interact with top professional anglers, including Hank Parker, Jimmy Houston and Byron Velvick. FLW’s namesake Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, will also be greeting fans.
On Saturday and Sunday the first 500 children 14 and under each day who are accompanied by an adult will receive a voucher to redeem for a free rod and reel combo courtesy of KATV ABC 7 after the evening’s weigh-in. Also on Sunday one lucky fishing fan will win a brand new Ranger Z520C bass boat with an Evinrude G2 outboard motor courtesy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. The Ranger Boat giveaway is free to enter but the winner must be present at the conclusion of Sunday’s final weigh-in to win.
Also on Saturday and Sunday, FLW fans will be treated to the Bass & BBQ Festival in conjunction with the FLW Expo. During the two day event, fans will have the opportunity to sample barbecue from 30 of the top teams in the country. The competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and is a part of a yearlong points race to find the best barbecue in the nation. A $5 donation will give fans five tickets to redeem for pulled pork and rib samples from the competing teams. All fans who buy sampling tickets will help determine the “Fishermen’s Favorite†Award, which goes to the team that collects the most votes. Awards will be presented before the Forrest Wood Cup weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday at Bank of the Ozarks Arena. The total payout for the two-day competition is $10,00.
Live concerts will also be a huge part of the Bass & BBQ festival and the FLW weigh-ins. Shari Bales & Southbound will perform outdoors at the competition on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m., while the Luke Williams Band will play at the same time Sunday. Country music superstar Justin Moore will headline the festivities with a free live concert on the Walmart weigh-in stage in Bank of the Ozarks Arena on Sunday, starting at 4 p.m. The Valory Music Company recording artist has four No.1 hits, including “Small Town USA,†“If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away†and “Til My Last Day.
The Folger’s Morning Takeoffs, FLW Expo, Bass & BBQ event, live concerts and weigh-ins are all free and open to the public.
“Fans that come out to the Forrest Wood Cup this year are in for a real treat,†said Steve Arrison, Chief Executive Officer of Visit Hot Springs. “We’ve got great fishing, great music and great BBQ, and it is going to make for one awesome week.â€
Coverage of the Forrest Wood Cup will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) when “FLW†airs December 6 from 7 - 8 p.m. ET. The Emmy-nominated "FLW" television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — On a Northern fishery known for producing monster smallmouth bass, three Florida largemouth gurus stole the show during the opening round of the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River.
Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Fla., caught five smallmouth that weighed 22 pounds, 15 ounces and grabbed the lead ahead of Lakeland, Fla., pro Bobby Lane (21-10) and a second Gainesville angler, Bernie Schultz (21-7).
Grigsby said he made a long run that was slowed some by shipping traffic. But once he arrived where he wanted to fish, he caught bass steadily — even when the heavy rains began.
“I didn’t know what the weather was going to bring us, but I took off and drove a good long ways,” Grigsby said. “I hit one of those huge ship waves out there that are like two-story buildings and realized I needed to slow down a little bit. But once I finally got there, I started catching them and kept catching them all day.”
Pleasant overcast conditions at takeoff quickly gave way to thunderstorms with heavy rains and streaks of lightning that chased some anglers briefly off the water.
While Grigsby revealed little about the techniques he used, he said the rain never slowed him down.
“It was a gully washer out there for a while, but I just kept catching them,” Grigsby said. “Whether I can accomplish that again tomorrow, I just don’t know.
“For one thing, I don’t know if my heart can handle it. When you hook these fish, with every one of them, it’s like a 10-minute battle.”
The smallmouth on the St. Lawrence River were late finishing their spawn this year, and as a result, they’re late moving into the usual postspawn areas. Many anglers visited traditional midsummer hot spots during practice with no luck at all, and even those who had success Thursday said it’s hard to find fish in bunches.
“The fishing is very random,” Schultz said. “In places I fished two years ago where there would be 12 to 15 fish, I’m finding four to six fish. Places that would have had five or six fish two years ago have one or none.”
Schultz said he didn’t get a lot of bites, but he got the “right bites.” He also said the erratic weather worked in his favor.
“The weather change played right into my hands,” he said. “I caught fish one way in the morning when it was raining. Then when that sun came out, I switched gears and things just kept happening.
“After the tough practice I had, I was surprised I caught them like I did.”
Lane also had a tough time preparing for the event, but for vastly different reasons than Schultz.
On July 4, Lane stepped on piece of glass and suffered a severe cut on his right foot. It put him completely out of commission for two weeks, and he was worried he might have trouble standing up this week to fish.
With help from friends, he made it through practice and landed in second place after Day 1.
“My good friend Tony Chachere — of the Louisiana spice company of that name — drove me most of the way up here, and he’s helped me with anything I’ve needed this week,” Lane said. “Alan McGuckin with Toyota also told me to get some Dr. Scholl’s (inserts) to put in my shoes, and that’s been helping a lot.
“I’m feeling great. I had a good day, and hopefully I can go out and do it again tomorrow.”
Every angler in the Top 10 had at least 20 pounds, including Texas pro Alton Jones, who placed fourth with 21-4, and Oklahoma pro Edwin Evers, who is in fifth with 21-3.
Alabama angler Aaron Martens finished 13th with 19-8, but it was enough to grab the lead in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race. Arizona pro Dean Rojas, who came into the event leading the AOY race, finished 49th Thursday with 16-6 and slipped to second in the season standings.
The tournament will resume Friday with a full field of 107 anglers taking off from Whittaker Park at 6:15 a.m. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3:15 p.m.
The field will be trimmed to the Top 50 for Saturday’s semifinal round and then to the Top 12 for Championship Sunday.
Follow all the action on Bassmaster.com with Bassmaster Live at 10 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus photos, live blog updates, BASSTrakk and more.
The Elite Series Expo will have B.A.S.S. sponsor representatives onsite throughout the weekend with activities, games and prizes for attendees. All of the family-friendly activities planned throughout the weekend are free and open to the public.

Major League Fishing Selects Filming In Youngstown, Ohio
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (July 24, 2015) – The Major League Fishing GEICO Select series made its way this week to historic Youngstown, Ohio, where the popular television show is filming its second event of the season.
The Bass Pro Shops Challenge Select, presented by Ferguson, features 24 MLF anglers - a field that includes Bassmaster Classic and Forrest Wood Cup champions, Toyota Angler of the Year winners and title-holders from both the BASS Elite and the FLW Walmart series – are competing on multiple lakes in the Mahoning County, Ohio region.
“I can’t be any more candid than to say that I knew we were coming to a fascinating part of the country, but I didn’t know what we should expect in terms of quality fisheries. We didn’t know because this is not an area where many our professional anglers have competed,” said Major League Fishing Commissioner Don Rucks.
“We could not be happier. We have great partners in Youngstown and Mahoning County. And as far as the fishing goes, it has been terrific. I firmly believe the shows from Youngstown are going to be terrific. We’ve had close finishes and periods where are anglers are catching them in bunches. I can’t wait to see these episodes."
The Select series is a companion to the Major League Fishing Cup series. The Selects from Youngstown will begin airing during the second quarter of 2016 on Outdoor Channel, America’s Leader in Outdoor Television.
Major League Fishing Select anglers include : Scott Ashmore, Bill Day, Brent Chapman, Gary Clouse, Jason Christie, Ott DeFoe, Kurt Dove, Todd Faircloth, Randy Howell, Andy Montgomery, Cliff Pace, Pete Ponds, Brandon Palaniuk, Keith Poche, Marty Robinson, Mark Rose, Fred Roumbanis, Casey Scanlon, Kevin Short, Fletcher Shryock, Scott Suggs, Gerald Swindle, James Watson and Jacob Wheeler.
Based on their performances in Youngstown, six anglers from the Challenge Select will earn spots in the Major League Fishing Challenge Cup, which will feature the original 24 MLF anglers.
As in all Major League Fishing events, competing anglers are not allowed to practice or research venues. The anglers are chauffeured by boat officials to their fishing sites and are not told the actual locations until they reach a staging area.
Select events utilize the innovative Major League Fishing format, in which anglers are allowed to weigh all the “scorable” bass they catch. The bass are immediately weighed after they are caught, then are released back into the water. In Major League Fishing competition, anglers know where they rank in the standings at all times via SCORETRACKER© devices in their boats. Anglers are not allowed to practice before event.

Google Earth Proves Key For Bassmaster College Classic Bracket Winner
Pro anglers would be wise to pay close attention to a technological tool Trevor Lo, a University of Minnesota junior, used to win the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket Tuesday on the Wisconsin River Flowage: Google Earth.
Lo, a Marketing Major at Minnesota, weighed a three-bass limit at 6 pounds, 3 ounces, to defeat Texas A & M's Josh Bensema, who managed just one fish at 2 pounds, 8 ounces, in the championship round of the Classic Bracket.
The win vaulted Lo into the 2016 Bassmaster Classic on Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees near Tulsa, Ok., next March. In addition, he will have a fully-rigged Toyota Tundra accompanied by a sponsor-provided, fully rigged boat-and-motor combo to use for the year. Lo was also awarded $7,500 cash by Carhartt to use for expense money in the 2016 Bass Pro Shops Opens. Plus the entry fees for all nine of those Opens were waived.
Bensema and teammate Matthew McArdle had just won the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Championship on Lake DuBay over the weekend and Bensema rolled into the championship round by defeating Andrew Helms who was a member of the UNC Charlotte team that won the 2014 National Championship.
Although between school and his job as a server in a sushi restaurant, Lo does not have time to fish tournaments other than those in college competitions, he grew up watching pros like Kevin Van Dam and Ike Iaconelli on television.
“I grew up fishing as a little kid and then in my late teens I got into a couple of local tournaments and that really sparked my interest in fishing competitively,” he said. “I always followed the pros on television and seeing them weigh in on the big stage I though it would be really neat to be a part of that.”
Next year, Lo said, he plans to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the Classic Bracket win. In the meantime he will be fishing the FLW College Series in hopes of qualifying for that championship as well.
“I'll be a senior this fall and next year I will be fishing the Bassmaster Classic as well as the B.A.S.S. Open tournaments,” he said. “It would be a dream come true,” he added, “to qualify for the Elite Series.”
Like the pros, Lo said he always studied maps to find places in a system that might produce fish.
“I never had electronics growing up. So, I just decided to do Google Earth to see what I liked, what stood out. Fish relate to similar things in river systems,” he said.
So, when the top four teams that were decided by the national championship on Saturday were given the opportunity to go out for an hour and scout the new competition waters of the Wisconsin River Flowage for the Classic Bracket, Lo chose to stay and work on tackle. He'd already researched the water online, using Google Earth.
“I fish a lot of river systems back home, and I did what I know how to do,” he said. “I looked for outside bends in the main channel. I found current breaks and fished deep laydowns. I started with that game plan on the first day and it worked so I stuck to it.”
If they are not already using it, pro anglers might want to add Google Earth to their tournament preparation. It worked pretty well for the college kid.
Big Bucks On The Line For Biggest Bass In Grand Lake Big Bass Bash
In 2006 Charlie Terrell and his dad were driving back to Missouri from Lake Guntersville where they had just fished in a big bass tournament and they got to talking about the fact that there was nothing like that going on at any of the Missouri lakes.
So, they decided to launch their own and the first tournament on Lake O' the Ozarks drew more than 500 entries and paid $64,000 in prize money, Terrell said. In the nine years since Terrell's Big Bass Bash tournaments have awarded more than $2 million in prize money to lucky anglers. More than half a million dollars in prize money will be given in three Big Bass Bash tournaments in 2015 – one in the spring and one in the fall on Lake O' the Ozarks and one this weekend on Grand Lake.
Between 1,000 and 1,200 entries are expected for the tournament this weekend on Grand Lake, with more than $123,000 in prize money on the line. More than 96 places will be paid and whoever catches the biggest bass of the weekend will go home with $51,000 in cash.
“We had our first one at Grand Lake last year and we had right at 800 anglers and a $100,000 payout,” Terrell said.
The Big Bass Bash is for amateurs only, allowing weekend anglers a chance to win big money like the professionals. Unlike most fishing tournaments which have a team arrangement where prizes are based on total weight, the Big Bass Bash format is distinctive in that it only takes one angler just one big bass to win.
The top 3 heaviest bass of the weekend will win these cash prizes: 1st Place Overall, $50,000; 2nd Place Overall, $15,000; and 3rd Place Overall, $10,000. In addition to the three overall payouts, there will be over $45,000 in guarantied cash prizes for the 12 largest bass caught during each bi-hourly weigh-in period, for a total of 96 bi-hourly payouts. There is also a children's division for kids 12 and younger, and a $250 bonus for the lady who hauls in the biggest bass.
The Midwest has been pounded by heavy rains over the last month and Grand Lake is high, Terrell said, but with the willows flooded fishing is expected to be good.
“The temperature is expected to be 97 on Saturday and 99 on Sunday, with zero chance for precipitation, so it's going to be a warm one,” he said.
There will be three weigh-in locations to accommodate the Big Bass Bash anglers. Weigh-in locations are Wolf Creek, Bernice Point, and Arrowhead South.
Terrell added that the high payouts in the Big Bass Bash series would not be possible without good sponsors.
“I want to thank the Grand Lake Association, Grand Lake Casino, Ranger Boats, Lews and the Grand River Dam Authority. Brad Davis with the GRDA has been a tremendous help in getting things organized for the tournament.”

Rain, rain and more rain may make fishing tough for Music City BFL on Old Hickory
Fishing in the Music City BFL on Old Hickory Lake could be tough this weekend, but that suits Tim Staley.
“I may not win all the time any more,” said Staley, who is ranked 11th in the Music City Division points race,” but I've always got a decent bag of fish. If fishing is really good sometimes I get beat, but if it's tough I do better a lot of times.”
The heavy rains that have pounded the country's midsection and surrounding areas for the past month have put a lot of water in the Cumberland River drainage and all that water has to go somewhere, so tons of water are flowing through the Cordell Hull Lock and Dam into Old Hickory.
“We've had a lot of rain – an inch and a half yesterday,” Staley said Wednesday. They are putting so much water through Old Hickory right now that it's kind of making the fish on drops get scattered out.”
Whoever wins the tournament, he said, likely will be somebody who lucks up and locates good fish between the river and the flats.
“They will be coming off the river and towards the flats, trying to get out of that cold water. They like cool water, but when it has been so hot and then it gets that cold it throws them off,” he said. “They have been dumping so much water out of Cordell Hull that it is in the 70s when it ought to be 80 degrees or close to it. That kind of change will affect the fish.”
They will also be looking for some relief from the heavy current created by all the moving water, Staley said.
“Fish like current, but they don't like a lot of current, so when they are pulling water that hard they try to get out of it.”
Staley, who grew up and lives in Dowelltown, Tenn., near Center Hill Lake, is used to fishing deep water, he said, but he really likes fishing the shallower lakes like Old Hickory and Kentucky Lake.
He has recorded three top 10s in the Music City Division points – 9th in 2002, 4th in 2005 and1st in 2004. He has 21 top 10s in tournament competition, with four wins, and has earned more than $91,000 fishing mostly the Music City Division.
After a slow start – 62nd on Dale Hollow in March – Staley finished 4th on Center Hill in May and 10th on Kentucky Lake in June.
“I don't get to fish as much as I used to because I have to work more now,” said Staley who is a contractor, building houses, and also a fishing guide. “I'll probably work a half day Friday then get to the lake and see if I can figure something out before the meeting.”

Chris Dillow Wins Bassmaster Northern Open On James River

Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Va., wins the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open #1 presented by Allstate held on the James River out of Richmond, Va. Dillow brought 19 pounds, 2 ounces to Saturday's weigh-in giving him a three-day total weight of 50-12.
RICHMOND, Va. — Chris Dillow couldn’t match the 20-pound bag that Boyd Duckett brought to the scales on the first day of this year’s Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open #1, but he never faltered. Dillow caught 19 pounds, 2 ounces of James River bass Saturday to bring his three-day total to 50-12, enabling him to defeat his closest challenger by a margin of more than 9 pounds.
The victory earned him a Nitro Z9 bass boat and tandem Nitro trailer rigged with a Mercury 225 Pro XS valued at $45,000.
While the majority of the field made long runs and burned dozens of gallons of gas each day, Dillow stayed close, never venturing past the mouth of the Appomattox River tributary. He maximized his fishing time and generally avoided the crowds. Similarly, while others rued the increasingly undesirable and unpredictable tidal flows, Dillow was glad the water was higher than normal for longer than normal.
“I like high tide,” he said. “I like that security over my fish. When it gets too low, they tend to get spooky.”
The realtor from nearby Waynesboro, Va., relied on a jig of his own making — the Dillow’s Perfect Jig — as well as a Strike King DB Structure jig to pluck his fish from a variety of hard cover, including rocks, wood and several sets of old pilings.
“It’s a milk run that I fish all the time,” Dillow added. Included in that series of stops were “one or two community holes” that enabled him to fill out a limit and then push forward in search of kickers.
He fished the jigs on a 7-foot, 11-inch G.Loomis GLX flipping stick paired with an 8:1 Lew’s Speed Spool baitcasting reel spooled with 20-pound-test Seaguar Invizx fluorocarbon.
Duckett’s unheard-of 20-4 limit on Thursday had Dillow in second place, but even Dillow’s subpar 12-13 on Friday allowed him to claim a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish. Duckett was not able to amass a double digit catch either the second or third day.
After falling to second on Friday, Duckett ended the tournament in 12th place. Like many others, he was a victim of a tide that didn’t go out according to the tide charts, and then a decreased amount of “good low tide” on the short final day of competition.
As Duckett and others like Dave Lefebre struggled to match their heavy first-day catches, Ohio pro Michael Simonton remained exceptionally consistent over the course of the three days. The former Elite Series angler turned in catches of 14-14, 13-10 and 12-11 to finish second with a three-day total of 41-3. He relied primarily on a black Spro frog, but only had a limited period of time to produce his fish.
“The first hour when we started fishing was game time,” Simonton said. “It was fast and furious and awesome. Today, I stayed in my primary area and never left. I’m not sure why it was so good. There was a boat ramp nearby, and I was skipping the frog to laydowns and under overhanging trees.”
Adrian Avena of Vineland, N.J., finished third with 36-3. Like Simonton, he was consistent, producing limits that weighed 12-10, 12-9 and 11-0, but was unable to consistently catch the larger fish that Dillow corralled. He credited his New Jersey upbringing with teaching him how the fish relate to tidal movement, but noted that he couldn’t capitalize on unfavorable tides.
“The tide was coming in most of the day,” Avena said. “That didn’t matter on my starting place, but after that it was pretty much a grind.” He used a “power drop shot,” a finesse worm and a 1/2-ounce Zorro buzzbait to put together his limits.
In past Northern Opens on the James River, most of the leaders amassed their catches in the Chickahominy River, a 45-minute run from the Osborne Landing launch site. This week the “Chick” once again saw plenty of boat traffic, but it didn’t produce the best catches.
Nick Angiulo of Hainesport, N.J., won the co-angler division with three three-fish limits that totaled 21-3. Greg Mauldin of Archdale, N.C., was second with 20-15, and Lou Britos was third with 19-12.
Angiulo claimed the co-angler trophy and won a Triton 179 TrX paired with a Mercury 115 Pro XS valued at $30,000.
Dillow’s second-day leadership earned him the $250 Livingston Lures Leader Award. Britos captured the same title among co-anglers, pocketing a $250 Livingston Lure Pack.
Chris Flint of Potsdam, N.Y., won the Allstate Good Hands, Great Day of $250 for moving from 136th place to 52nd after Day 2. Among co-anglers, Matt Madlener of Illinois moved from 125th to 10th to garner $150 from Allstate.
Avena won the A.R.E. Top Angler prize of $500.
Texas pro Trait Crist landed the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass of the tournament, an 8-pound largemouth that ate her finesse worm on Day 2, earning her $750. Britos won the same award on the co-angler side by virtue of a 7-2 bass that he caught on Day 1, earning him an additional $250.

Miami University Of Ohio Wins Flw College Fishing Tourney On Indian Lake With 9 Pounds, 12 Ounces
Chris Bulaw and Josh Prephan of Miami University of Ohio won the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference event on Indian Lake with a 5-bass limit that weighed 9 pounds, 12 ounces.
Chris Dillow Takes Lead At Bassmaster Open On James River

Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Va., leads on Day 2 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open #1 presented by Allstate held on the James River out of Richmond, Va. Dillow brought 12 pounds, 13 ounces to the scales at Friday's weigh-in for a two-day total of 31-10.
RICHMOND, Va. — As other pros struggled with tides that didn’t act the way the tide chart dictated, Waynesboro, Va., pro Chris Dillow “just went fishing” and leapfrogged yesterday’s leader Boyd Duckett to take the lead in the Bass Pro Shops Northern Open presented by Allstate on the James River.
Dillow added 12 pounds, 13 ounces to the 18-13 he caught yesterday and now leads Duckett by 2-7 heading into the final day of competition.
“I did the same thing as yesterday,” Dillow said. “And I’m not going to change anything tomorrow. I’m going to run the same water and keep my homemade jig in my hand.”
The remainder of the Top 12 pro field is comprised mostly of full-time pros, including two Bassmaster Classic winners, Duckett and Mike Iaconelli, but Dillow said he’s not intimidated. “I’ve beaten them before,” he stated. “At the same time, I’m humbled to be on the same stage as those guys.”
Thursday’s opening round saw four limits weighing more than 17 pounds, but today there were none. Matt Vermilyea of Ohio weighed in the day’s best, 16-9, to jump up from 91st place and claim the last spot in the Top 12. No one has weighed in more than 14 pounds both days. Third-place pro Michael Simonton of Ohio came the closest, producing 14-14 on Day 1 and 13-10 today. Eight of Thursday’s Top 12 remain in the hunt, but many seemed flummoxed by a tidal system they thought they understood.
Perhaps no one was more hurt by the tide — or lack thereof — than Duckett, the 2007 Bassmaster Classic winner, whose 8-15 Day 2 catch was less than half of what he weighed in on Day 1.
“We had a really weird tide today,” he said. “It was almost like we didn’t have one. It came up real slow and we never had current. The tide never did anything.”
He remained in his primary area until 11:30 a.m. without catching a keeper and then scrambled up the river to sack a small limit. Despite today’s struggles, he plans to start downriver again Saturday. “Big fish live there,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if I finish fifth or 12th. I’m not fishing this for points.”
Like Duckett, Pennsylvania pro Dave Lefebre slipped down the leaderboard, in his case from third to fifth, also catching less than half of his first-day weight. He only weighed in three fish, two short of his limit, and now sits a bit over 4 pounds out of the lead.
“I need 10 bites to catch five fish,” Lefebre said. “I only had seven today. I have a big fish deal going, and I got three bites on it yesterday and only one today. I’ll follow that all day tomorrow.”
Iaconelli’s Day 2 catch didn’t fall into the single digits, but the 11-3 he weighed in, combined with his 15-9 from yesterday, enabled him to hold down eighth. Like many of the others, Iaconelli observed that the tide didn’t move as expected, but he couldn’t quite explain why.
“It was a little behind,” he said. “You can’t predict that. On the Delaware River, sometimes “something in the ocean, 350 miles away, causes a big impact.” He said that fishing pressure in fragile areas is also likely making fishing tough.
“More than anything, it’s guys moving around,” he stated. “That stirs the banks up and the muddy water from the wash shuts them down, even if you have the right tide.”
Unless local fishing pressure increases on the final day of competition Saturday, the remaining dozen pros and an equal number of co-anglers should have a bit more breathing room. Regardless of whether the tide moves as planned, a winner will be crowned in the afternoon.
Dillow’s second-day leadership earned him the $250 Livingston Lures Leader Award.
In the co-angler division, Louis Britos of Disputanta, Va., caught a limit that weighed 6-5, far short of the 12-7 that put him in the lead on Day 1, but it was enough to hold onto first place with a lead of 2-6. For leading after Day 2, he earns the $250 Livingston Lure Pack.
Fort Worth, Texas, pro Trait Crist caught an 8-pound largemouth to take over the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass of the tournament lead on the pro side. If that fish holds up through tomorrow’s final weigh in Crist will win $750. She fooled the big bass with a black grape finesse worm fished on a Slider Head. The 7-2 largemouth that Britos weighed in on Day 1 remains the heaviest bass caught on the co-angler side. If it is not surpassed tomorrow, he will win $250.
Chris Flint of Potsdam, N.Y., recovered from a bad first day to win the Allstate Good Hands, Great Day award of $250 for moving from 136th place to 52nd thanks to a 14-pound limit.
Among co-anglers, Matt Madlener of Lake Villa, Ill., moved from 125th to 10th place to garner $150 from Allstate.

Texas A&m Grabs Early Lead In College Bass Championship
Texas A&M’s Josh Bensema and Matthew McArdle started fast and furious on Lake DuBay, catching their three-bass limit early and leading the way on a challenging fishery.
“This morning went very well for us,” Bensema said. “We had our fish by 7 a.m., and then we decided to lay off and save them for tomorrow.”
The Texas anglers made a crucial decision on the final practice day.
“It took us three days to figure out the pattern,” McArdle said. “We are from Texas, and we have largemouth. We tried to figure out the smallmouth over the last few days and we couldn’t, so on the third day of practice, we went searching for largemouth. And we found them.”
Unlike Bensema and McArdle, who were right at home in the shallow backwaters catching largemouth, the two teams tied for second place weighed in limits of smallmouth.
JP Kimbrough and Jared Rascoe of Louisiana State University-Shreveport and Trevor Lo and Chris Burgan of the University of Minnesota are tied at 7 pounds, 15 ounces apiece. Kimbrough and Rascoe started slow Thursday morning, but steadily put together their three-fish limit.
After failing to score in areas where they had practiced, the pair moved to another area of Lake DuBay and caught what would be the biggest bass of the day for them, according to Kimbrough. When that area “started to get crowded” the pair went to yet another new spot. They didn’t fill out their limit until 15 minutes before it was time to head back to check-in.
The falling water on Lake DuBay was a popular topic backstage, but LSU-Shreveport doesn’t think it will bother their bite much, but they wonder how it could affect the anglers targeting largemouth.
Minnesota’s Lo and Burgan caught 7-15 as well and are just 2 ounces off the pace set by Texas A&M.
“We were just hoping to catch a limit going into today. We pulled up to a spot that we didn’t fish in practice and we caught them there,” Lo said. “We only culled once today, so it was slow after the flurry.”
Appalachian State’s Hunter Hill and Ethan Howell sacked up 7 pounds, 14 ounces to finish the day in fourth. Their limit bag consisted of two largemouth and one smallmouth.
Rounding out the Top 5 is Frankie Appaluccio and Logan Shaddix of the University of Alabama with 7 1/2 pounds of smallmouth bass.
The defending National Champions, Jake Whitaker and Andrew Helms of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte are tied for sixth — just 2 ounces behind Appaluccio and Shaddix — with Cade Laufenberg and Wyatt Stout of Winona State. The weights on DuBay were very close with 12th place sitting just 2 pounds out of the Top 5, which will advance to the final day.
John Garrett and Brian Pahl from Bethel University lead the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass competition with a fish weighing 3 pounds, 11 ounces.
The three-fish limit may seem odd in an age when five is the typical tournament limit, but Wisconsin allows each competitor to have three fish per day. Since four anglers are fishing the National Championship solo, tournament officials established a three bass limits for the entire field.
All of the Day 2 action from Lake DuBay will be on Bassmaster.com throughout the day and weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. CT at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Friday's takeoff is at the Tiki Beach Bar and Grill at 6 a.m. CT.

Duckett Leads Day 1 At Bassmaster Open On James River

Boyd Duckett of Guntersville, Ala., takes the lead on Day 1 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open #1 presented by Allstate held on the James River out of Richmond, Va. Duckett brought 20 pounds, 4 ounces to the scales at Thursday's weigh-in.
RICHMOND, Va. – The Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Opens presented by Allstate are supposed to provide anglers with a respite from the summertime heat of the Deep South, but on Thursday, the first day of the season-opening tournament on the James River, the temperature hit a steamy and humid high of 97 degrees.
Alabama pro Boyd Duckett likewise brought the Southern-fried heat, as he sacked 20 pounds, 4 ounces of James River bass to take an early lead.
“I burned lots of fuel today,” said the 2007 Bassmaster Classic champion. “I hit a lot of one-fish spots. The tide is everything here; you have to hit your best places at the right time. There are lots of boats running the areas that I’m fishing. Every place I fished had 29 boats on it. But it’s the way that I’m fishing it that makes the difference.”
Mike Iaconelli, who sits in seventh place with 15-9 and has made two final-day cuts here before, said that he was surprised to see a 20-pound bag brought to the scales. There might have been two such bags had Pennsylvania pro Dave Lefebre capitalized on all of his chances. Instead he weighed in 18-6, putting him in third, less than 2 pounds behind Duckett.
Like Duckett, Lefebre said he’s “doing something a little bit different,” and had the bites to have a 23-pound limit.
In between those two pros sits Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Va., with 18-13. Dillow is taking a break from his real estate business and “just going fishing.”
Despite being a relative local, Dillow said he’s not running the tides, but rather waiting out his fish throughout the changing water levels.
“I didn’t have a plan today,” he said. “Tomorrow my only plan is to keep Dillow’s Perfect Jig in my hand and not put it down.”
Another pair of Virginians, Ryan Powroznik and Frank Poirier, hold down fourth and fifth with 17-3 and 16-4, respectively. Powroznik, the cousin of Elite Series pro Jacob Powroznik, ran the tide until about 1 o’clock, but said that he could have done better had he not gotten behind on his rotation.
“There’s only a tight window of time when they’re feeding,” he explained. “I didn’t beat on them too bad today.”
While Iaconelli is nearly 5 pounds off the lead, he refused to concede anything after one day, He noted that Duckett similarly had a massive bag last year at the Elite Series tournament on the Delaware River, an event in which Iaconelli eventually claimed the trophy before an adoring hometown crowd.
“The key here is to be consistent,” Iaconelli said. “Anyone who can catch 13 to 15 pounds a day over three days will have a shot to win.”
In the co-angler division, Lou Britos of Disputanta, Va., the last man in the field of nearly 400 total anglers to weigh in, took a commanding lead with a three-fish limit that weighed 12-07. No other co-angler made it into double digits. Indeed, the next angler in line, Scott Kerslake, is still shy of 4 pounds of Britos. Included in his catch was a 7-2 largemouth that he caught on a spinnerbait around noon, fishing behind pro Joe Gensini of Illinois.
“I didn’t do anything special,” Britos said. “My partner had me around fish all day.”
The big bass on the pro side was caught by Roy Minnock, also of Illinois. His bass weighed 6-11. If either of those fish holds up as the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass of the tournament in their respective divisions, they will be worth $750 on the pro side and $250 on the amateur side.
The full field will compete on Friday, and the Top 12 pros and the Top 12 co-anglers qualifying for the finals on Saturday.
The tournament will launch each day at 6 a.m. ET at Osborne Park and Boat Landing. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at the Bass Pro Shops in Ashland at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
The local hosts for the event are Visit Richmond and Henrico County Recreation and Park.

The Lake Dardanelle Collegiate Derby Announced For March 2016
The Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Series is pleased to announce Lake Dardanelle as the second stop of the 2016 collegiate bass fishing. The event will be held on March 24-26 and will be hosted by Russellville Tourism and Visitor Center in Russellville, Arkansas.
"Russellville, Arkansas and Lake Dardanelle are very excited to host this event for the very first time," said Christie Graham, Executive Director of Tourism. "We are looking forward to having these collegiate anglers on our lake and can't wait to see everyone this spring!"
As one of four double-points Cabela's School of the Year events, the Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Series and the Association of Collegiate Anglers are excited to offer collegiate anglers the chance to compete on Lake Dardanelle as part of the 2016 Cabela's School of the Year Race.
"We're very excited to head to be going to Lake Dardanelle in 2016. This will be our first time hosting one of major televised events on this body of water. College anglers competing in this event will be treated to great fishing and a new event within the series" said Wade Middleton, Director of the Association of Collegiate Anglers and President of CarecoTV. "Because of the double points that will be awarded at this event, it will be one that anglers will not want to miss to stay competitive in the Cabela's School of the Year race."
We look forward to seeing everyone this spring at Lake Dardanelle on March 24-26!

Key To Winning Bassmaster Northern Open On The James Is To Match Lure Selection To Primary Forage
The James River holds the potential to win a bass tournament from the rapids in Richmond all the way down to where the river pours into the salt waters of Chesapeake Bay, said Bassmaster Elite Pro Michael Iaconelli who has finished in the top 5 in the last two Bassmaster Northern Opens held on the river.
“I've got some familiarity with the river from fishing there prior and it's a tidal river like the Potomac, the Chesapeake and the Hudson rivers, so there are a lot of parallels with East Coast tidal river fishing and that gives me an awful lot of confidence when I go down there,” said Iaconelli who finished 4th in the 2011 Bassmaster Northern Open on the James and 3rd in the 2013 Northern Open.
“The entire river is viable and it is diverse and the other thing about that river is that it is so unique,” said the Pittsgrove, N.J., angler as he prepared for the 2015 Northern Open on the James which will be held June 9-11. “A lot of rivers have one predominant form of cover, but the James is really diverse. You can fish everything from rocks to man-made structure like pilings and seawalls, wood in the form of trees and brush, and then the vegetation in some of the tributaries.”
That diversity, he said, makes it an easy river to fish because it spreads the anglers out since they have so many options.
The key, then, he said, is making the right lure selection.
“Lure selection is something we do everywhere, but on tidal rivers like the James it is even more important. You have to match the hatch. My lure selection is going to be placed on matching the forage the fish are feeding on.”
And the forage in the James is richly diverse, he said, much moreso than in an inland impoundment because the river connects to the ocean.
“On a Southern reservoir like Lake Murray, for instance, you know the forage base is going to be blueback herring, shad and bluegills. On the James it is so much bigger. You have shad, bluegills, crawfish, but because the lower tributaries are ocean-bound you've got other forage,” he said.
“Little 3- to 5-inch eels are a big forage base this time of year, as are blue crabs. Bass love small 2- to 3-inch blue crabs. You find all that forage you don't see in freshwater, like flathead minnows and small needlefish. All that is going to dictate my bait selection.”
Iaconelli, who counts the 2003 Bassmaster Classic on the Louisiana Delta among his 8 B.A.S.S. wins, has 60 top 10 finishes in his pro career and has earned almost $2.3 million in prize money in B.A.S.S. tournaments.
He led the Bassmaster Elite tournament on Lake Guntersville for three days before an unfortunate final day when he caught only one bass and finished 12th. He was 6th in the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell in February.
As for the Northern Open on the James, Iaconelli said the weights probably will not be as good next week as they have been for the last few months in tournaments.
“There have been some major tournaments on the river and it a big FLW event two or three weeks ago there were some phenomenal weights, a lot of 16- to 18-pound bags brought in. I think we will see some of those bags but we are switching into a summertime pattern now and fishing will be a little tougher,” he said.
“I think it will take 15 to 16 pounds a day to win it and for an East Coast tidal fishery that is a really good average for mid-July.”

Clear water, super smallmouth fishing make Detroit River a favorite for BFL Michigan Division
In early April Freddy Hurley of Somerset, Ky., drove more than 400 miles to the Detroit River to fish for walleye.
“Ten million walleye come into that river to spawn every year and we caught some big ones,” he said.
But when Hurley goes to the Detroit River for the FLW Walmart BFL Michigan Division tournament July 11 he won't be fishing for walleye. He'll be fishing for big smallmouth bass.
“I like clear water and that river is one of the best rivers to catch smallmouth that I have ever fished in – and I have fished a lot of places,” said Hurley who finished the 2014 Michigan Division season ranked 8th in points, with his best two finishes a 10th place on the Detroit River in July and 10th again in August on the river.
“I was in the top five going into the last tournament of the year, but it didn't work out, but I have made the regional up there every year,” Hurley said.
“I got three checks in a row up there last year, but I never did get that one bite I needed. What happens up there is that you can get hooked on 3-pound smallmouth and that won't get you anything. You have to go for the 4-pounders. You don't get as many bites, but that will give you 18 to 20 pounds for a limit.”
The key in fishing the Detroit River is the current, he said, although some anglers will fish up in Lake St. Clair and others will fish from the mouth of the river out into Lake Erie.
“Basically you are fishing heavy current which flows from Lake St. Clair into Lake Erie, mostly fishing tubes and drop shots in the little eddies,” he said. “The main thing you have to do is play the wind. The wind is your friend if you know how to play it.”
Hurley said the long drive to fish the Detroit River is well worth it.
“I fish five tournaments a year up there – all the Michigan BFL Division tournaments. Everybody loves to fish up there. There are between 25 to 50 co-anglers on the waiting list so that tells you something.”
The first Michigan BFL of 2015 was held June 27 on Lake St. Clair, with the July 11 tournament on the Detroit river to follow. The third tournament will be back on Lake St. Clair Aug. 1, followed by the Detroit River Aug. 15, with the final Michigan BFL scheduled for Sept. 19 on the Detroit River.

Outcome of BFL Hoosier Division tournament on Ohio River will depend on how much rain falls
Fishing in the third FLW Walmart BFL Hoosier Division tournament on the Ohio River July 11 is going to depend a lot on the weather, specifically whether the river is swollen from more heavy rains or not, according to veteran BFL angler George Brown of Camby, Ind.
“A lot will depend on whether the water gets back down, whether it will let the river come into play or not,” Brown said. “If we get more rain and it stays up and high it probably will be pretty tough fishing. But if it goes back down and the water clears up I think there will be a pretty good weigh-in.”
The tournament probably will be won on a shallow bite in the creeks, he said, but there are some big spotted bass to be caught in the river if conditions are right.
“On a typical day I would be fishing the main river, trying to get five spots and then head back down towards the dam, hitting the creeks,” he said. “There are several small creeks coming into the river with a lot heavy wood cover and real shallow flats. If the sun comes out and the wind gets up the fish will pull up on those flats.”
And, he added, if the water clears up there should be some spawning fish in those creeks because the spawn has been somewhat delayed by the up and down water levels created by the heavy rains in recent weeks.
“In the river, hopefully I can catch them on a crankbait on shoals and wood if there is a little current, and on a small worm. In the creeks I'll be pitching a Strike King Game Hog and throwing a spinnerbait,” he said.
Brown finished 6th in points in the Hoosier Division last year and he is currently second in points after finishing 7th in the first tournament April 25 on Lake Monroe and 17th in the second tournament May 30 on Lake Patoka.
“I have the same points as the leader (Lee Mills of Columbus, Ind.) but I am pretty sure he has more fish and that is the tie breaker,” Brown said.
After the tournament on the Ohio River out of Tanner's Creek July 11, the Hoosier Division will move to the Ohio River out of Rocky Point Aug. 1, then back to Tanner's Creek for the season final Sept. 12.

Univ Of North Alabama Wins Cabella's School Of The Year Title-For Second Year In A Row!!
University of North Alabama Seizes Second Consecutive Cabela's School of the Year Title
Murray State University Claims Second and Tennessee Tech University Takes Third
San Antonio, Texas (June 30, 2015) --
The University of North Alabama (UNA) landed their second consecutive Cabela's School of the Year Title with a season destined for victory. The UNA team, compiled of over forty members, kept the Cabela's School of the Year race as top priority for the season and through their hard work, commitment and dedication, they are once again crowned as the Cabela's School of the Year.
As the most prestigious title in the sport of college fishing, collegiate anglers know that in order to win the Cabela's School of the Year Title, schools must be on top of the leaderboard, not for a single tournament, but for tournaments all year round. The UNA Bass Team is no stranger to the top of the leaderboard as spectators and other competitors have seen that all year round in the Cabela's School of the Year Rankings.
When asked just how significant this title is, the Director of the Association of Collegiate Anglers and President of CarecoTV, Wade Middleton, said that "most people don't quite understand the significance of the competition and the title - this is the ultimate trophy of college fishing. In order for a school to win the Cabela's School of the Year Title, schools have to perform at their very best all year round, and not just one event, which is not an easy task."
The UNA Bass Team is beyond thrilled with their accomplishment and are proud to say that this has been what the team has desired since day one and to win the title two years in a row is an achievement that no other school has yet to accomplish.
"Honestly, winning it two years in a row is an awesome experience," said UNA Senior and Bass Team President, Dawson Lenz, "but we can't do it without our school. The school supports us and from that, we're able to travel and compete like we do. While we couldn't do it without our school, we also couldn't do it without the dedication from our team to compete day in and day out with the main goal of winning the Cabela's School of the Year Title."
"This is a feeling you kinda can't explain," added UNA Junior and Bass Team Secretary, Andrew Tate. "We've had such big increase in teams this year, in fact we almost doubled in size, but we all had this goal in mind. We had some struggles last year, but this year went smooth for us as a team and we were really able to get the ball rolling in the past few months to bring home the title."
As two veterans in the collegiate bass fishing world, Lenz and Tate want to create something to pass down to the team once they graduate.
"Since the beginning of this year, we wanted to create a dynasty for this team. We won the Cabela's School of the Year Title this year and last year and we sure as heck want to win it next year too. We're really excited about the new guys coming up as they are all so competitive and are really the future of the team," Lenz said.
Austin Mize, current freshman on the UNA Bass Team, is a prime example of who they want leading their team in years to come. Mize was a huge help to the club as he and his partner, Nathan Martin, finished fourth in the 10th Anniversary BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Presented by Cabela's, earning the team major Cabela's School of the Year Points to secure their lead in the rankings.

"Words really can't describe the feeling of winning this title. The high school team I had fished for four years was very successful as well and we had won our state competition each year I was there which I was lucky to be a part of, but it feels really good to jump from high school into a college program and continue to win, this time on a national level," Mize said.
"The new guys really surprised me this year. I thought they would be shy when it came to fishing tournaments, but they really stepped up and went all over the country without saying a word, which is what it takes to be great and win a title like this," Tate added.
When asked what the secret to winning the Cabela's School of the Year Title is, the three collegiate anglers all responded with three common themes: commitment, dedication, and a strong hunger for success.
"I wouldn't say there's really a secret to the win, but I would say we just want it more than anyone else," stated Tate. "We have a lot of self-confidence, it's not being cocky, but we know anything can happen throughout the day while we're fishing a tournament, like hooking into a six-pounder in the final hour of the day that could change everything, where other teams may go put the boat on the trailer and call it quits."
"The guys on our team are just so committed to be competitive in the points race that they put up their own dollar just to compete," added Lenz. "While we're all really good friends, we always just want to beat each other on the water which is what really fuels our competitive nature in the points race."
Mize added that "the key to winning is just dedication and commitment. You have to be prepared to lose some sleep and know that school is still going on and you have to get your work done. It's a lot more difficult when you have to make up your work, but the whole team is there to back you up and be right there with you."
While most bass teams get together to compete on the water, Mize's statement that the team is always there to back each member of the team up is nothing but the truth. The UNA Bass Team is more than just a bass team, and Tate and the rest of the team wouldn't have it any other way.

"Our team is together one hundred percent of the time whether we're on the on the water or not. The team all lives with other members of the team and we're always eating together, watching TV, or even going bowling together. I hate to compare the team to Greek life, but I think we even have something even better than that," said Tate.
Looking forward, the UNA Bass Team only looks to get stronger as a team and continue to work their way to the top of the Cabela's School of the Year Title.
"I plan to keep doing the same thing every year - win the Cabela's School of the Year Title. I was a little bit intimidated when I came to the college level, but I know my skill-set has gotten so much stronger over the past year, and I look forward to keep doing the same in the next three years," said Mize.
As one of many passionate members on the team, Tate explained how the UNA Bass Team is not just an extracurricular collegiate activity.
"Being a part of this team and this sport has taught me more than how to fish different bodies of water," said Tate. "It's taught me that you get what you put into something and that anything is possible. When I joined this team two years ago I was looking for something that I could really be passionate about, and I definitely found it. This team is the best thing that's happened to me and I thank God for the opportunity. Next year we will make a run at the title again in my senior year and we want it more than anything, I can assure you."

Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented By Berkley Announces 2016 Date
The Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley Announces
2016 Date
The Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Series is proud to announce that the Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley will be held on March 11-13, 2016 on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee. The 2015 event, which brought 300 anglers to the area last year to compete in the Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley, featured over $25,000 in prizes and giveaways and the 2016 collegiate event promises to be even bigger.
"We look forward to going to Paris Landing and Kentucky Lake every year because this is one of those lakes that is just absolutely incredible when it comes to largemouth and smallmouth fishing," said Wade Middleton, Director of the Association of Collegiate Anglers and President of CarecoTV. "In the big bass format where even a two pound fish can earn a check, anglers have the chance to win in eight possible weigh ins and just one cast can win the whole event and the college anglers know that, therefore they travel from many states to fish this event."
Due to the diverse format of the Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley, anglers mark this event on their calendars as a "can't-miss" tournament. Over twenty states were represented by over ninety colleges in the 2015 Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Berkley to get the chance to raise a Kentucky Lake giant above their heads on the stage and earn thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. So mark your calendar this year for March 11-13, 2016 for the Cabela's Collegiate Big Bass Bash Presented by Cabela's at Kentucky Lake's Paris Landing!
Water Is Hot But Weather May Cool Slightly For Chattanooga Bass Tournament Saturday
Although bass fishing on Chickamauga Lake has been red hot all year long, the current spate of persistent hot weather may cool fishing down a little bit for Saturday's Chattanooga Bass tournament, said CBC tournament director Brad Ferguson.
“The water temperature right now is in the high 80s to low 90s. The hot weather has slowed things down a little bit,” Ferguson said.
While the water may be hot for the fish, the daytime temperature actually may be fairly pleasant for the fishermen. The weather forecast calls for a rain front to move through the area Friday and Saturday, dropping the temperature down near 80 degrees for the tournament.
But the weather is not the only thing affecting the fishing, Ferguson said.
“We are getting a kind of odd generating schedule this year. Normally, the past few years they pulled water all day long when it was hot like this. Now they have the Watts Bar nuclear plant on-line and they are not generating through the hydro operation until peak times – 1-2 o'clock in the afternoon.”
Even with the daytime temperature moderating for the tournament, it's still summertime and Ferguson said CBA has put out information urging anglers to take special care in handling their fish to avoid having them die because of the heat.
While the weather has been hot and the water is, too, the points race has also heated up, Ferguson noted.
“Only a few points separate the top teams,” he said, noting that with summer night tournaments also on the schedule some anglers may not fish Saturday's day tournament. “I've talked to a couple of guys who fished the night tournament and they are happy with the points they got so they are not going to fish Saturday's tournament.”
During the months of June, July, and August the C.B.A. holds both a day event and a night event. Both tournaments during these months are open point tournaments. Under CBC rules, a participant may fish both events but will only receive points for that tournament month from the higher finish of the two.
Going into the tournament Saturday, only 10 points separate the top four teams: Chuck and Brad James are leading Rogne Brown and Cary Dotson by seven points; trailing them by one point are Brent Hayes and David Hix; and two points behind them are Galen James and Tony Townsend.
The CBA's 2015 schedule includes: June 27 (Day). July 11 (Day), July 25 (Night), Aug. 15 (Day), Aug. 29 (Night), Sept. 19 and Oct. 10, with the Classic Nov. 7-8.

Fully-Rigged Triton Or Ranger At Stake For Competitors In Airport Marine High School Super Classic
High school fishing tournaments are the fast-growing trend in competitive bass fishing and one of the best series for high schoolers in the country, the Airport Marine High School Team Trail in Alabama will hold its season-end Super Classic on Lay Lake Saturday with more than 60 teams expected to compete.
“This is our second year and we are building the entry every tournament, getting more and more high school anglers to participate,” said tournament director Flynn Gerald, who added: “We are paying back more money than anybody in high school tournaments in our area.”
However, he noted, the money paid back in the Airport Marine tournaments is earmarked for scholarships which the anglers can use to help pay for school expenses or save for college.
With 60 or more teams qualified for the Super Classic Saturday, Gerald said he anticipates just about all of them will compete because the grand prize is a brand new fully-rigged Triton or Ranger boat. The winning captain will also win $5,000 if he is in a qualified boat or a $5,000 gift certificate towards the purchase of a new boat from Airport Marine if he is not in a qualified boat.
The youth teams will not fish for the new boat. Everyone who participates in the tournament will be entered in a drawing and the winner will trailer the new boat home.
Fishing on Lay Lake right now is pretty tough, Gerald said, but he expects some of the teams to do really well in the tournament.
“I'd say they will catch some early in the grass, but it gets really tough in the grass once the sun gets up so the tournament will be won out deep on crankbaits and jigs.”
Students in grades 6-12 were eligible to fish the tournament series and competing in one tournament qualified them to fish in the Super Classic. They are partnered with an adult captain who is not allowed to cast or even net a fish.
The prize package in each tournament include $3,500 guaranteed in scholarship money, with a one in six payback, including $1,000 for first place, $1,000 for the highest finisher with a permanent Airport Marine logo on their shirts, $1,000 to their school and $500 in cash to the winning captain if he is in a qualified boat or a $500 gift certificate toward a new boat fromn Airport Marine if he is not.
“We are also involved with B.A.S.S.,” Gerald said, “so for every 25 teams we can send a team to the Bassmaster High School Series national championship.”
The B.A.S.S. High School Nation is helping shape the future of the sport, one high school club at a time, according to a Bassmaster spokesman. As part of the B.A.S.S. High School Nation, young anglers can compete in the B.A.S.S. High School Nation Opens and in the B.A.S.S. High School Nation Championship. Teen anglers can also attend the High School Elite Experience, a free opportunity for anglers who live near certain Bassmaster Elite Series tour stops.
When B.A.S.S launched the Bassmaster High School Series in 2014, the series exceeded the number of anglers expected to participate within the first four months of the program’s inception. The sudden growth sparked a need to accommodate the demand for a youth fishing platform across the nation.
“The number of anglers who want to fish with us is really impressive,” said Hank Weldon, manager of the Bassmaster High School Series. “High School fishing has the potential to be the largest tournament series we have in terms of angler participation.”
“We are fully committed to growing our High School B.A.S.S. Nation,” said Jon Stewart, B.A.S.S. Nation director. “The decision to invest more resources behind the High School Series was a no-brainer. The demand is there, and we know that 2015 is going to be very exciting for the growth of our sport.”

Points On Line For Adults And Youths In Collins Marine Tournament On Falls Lake
The Collins Marine Bass for Cash Series has two tournaments left in the regular season with points titles on the line in both the adult series and its youth series counterpoint – the Youth Educational Series (Y.E.S.).
The next to last tournament of both series will be held Saturday on Falls Lake where fishing has been red hot all year long and the regular season final will be held July 25 on the Roanoke River.
The Optional Points competition in the Bass for Cash Series has the 2014 championship team of Steve Vann and Richard Lewis with a slight lead over the second place team of Sammy Creech and Jeff Jones. Skeet Bennett and Buster Seabolt hold down the third position while Larry Hipps and Dean Lairson fill the fourth spot. In the fifth position is the duo of Abe Gaeta and DJ Mysilinski.
After the Roanoke River tournament, the adult series will hold a championship Aug. 15-16 on a site to be determined from the waters fished during the year in a blind draw at the final tournament. The Y.E.S. season will end with the Roanoke River tournament in July.
Nothing has grown faster in the outdoors world in recent years than the current youth movement in bass fishing, from the college level down to high schoolers – and even younger.
The Collins Marine Bass for Cash Series in North Carolina launched the Youth Educational Series this year and organizers could not be more happy with the way it was accepted. In this unique series, dedicated solely to youth anglers 18 years old and younger, the youth tournaments are held in conjunction with the Collins Marine Bass for Cash tournaments.
“It's the first year and I have been happy to have 8 to 10 boats on average in the youth tournaments,” said Jeff Narron, tournament director. “We are having 16 to 20 kids come out and fish in each tournament and we are really excited about that just out of the gate with the series.”
The main thrust of the Y.E.S. series, he said, is to get young anglers to come out and participate in the events. Basically, he said, there can be two youths 18 and under on the boat with an adult boat captain who does not fish.
“That's why we have no membership fees and no entry fees associated with the youth series. It is 100 percent free. The intent of the program is to give these young angels the opportunity to get out on the water and learn valuable skills and gain knowledge from their adult boat captain.
“The youths are doing all the casting, lure selection, etc. on their own. It provides a more level playing field since they are fishing against other youth anglers.”
Some $700 in awards, plush trophies for first and second place and the lunker fish are given out at each Y.E.S. tournament, Narron said. The awards, all donated by sponsors, include tackle the youths can use for fishing, including tackle bags, hooks, lures and other fishing gear.
The Y.E.S. points champions will be determined at the Roanoke River tournament, he noted, with the youth team winners receiving trophies and customized fishing Jerseys created just for them.
Four teams are in contention for the Y.E.S. points title – Alden Patterson and Logan Jennings, Tyler Little and Chase Crocker, Wyatt Long and Travis Beck, and Chris Chavez and Ethan Howard.
“We have a tie for first place in the Y.E.S. Series,” Narron said, “and only three points behind them is another tie for third place, so it's a four-way battle for the championship with only two events left.”

M-Pow-R Reel offers great benefits to physically-challenged anglers
NEW TECHNOLOGY OFFERS UTMOST IN FLEXIBILITY, PERFORMANCE FOR ANGLERS WITH PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS
The M-POW-R REEL®, now paired with the innovative and versatile M-POW-R Harness, gives anglers with physical limitations even more angling options
Brainerd, MN (June 16, 2015) – Through years of research and development and advice from such angling luminaries as Al Lindner, Dan Sura, Dave Csanda and Jeff Zernov, as well as input from anglers with physical limitations, was born the M-POW-R REEL®.
The M-POW-R REEL is an ingenious, motorized spinning reel which enables physically-challenged (especially one-handed) anglers to rediscover the joy of fishing. Powerful and versatile, the reel is designed to fit virtually any spinning rod, ice rod or fly rod, thanks to an innovative new M-POW-R Harness developed specifically for the reel.
The new product package includes the M-POW-R spinning reel, M-POW-R Harness, 4 amp battery, battery charger, fanny pack, and a pulse width modulated speed control, which provides optimum torque throughout the motor’s power band. Anglers operate the reel with a thumb-actuated button attached to the rod (via the M-POW-R Harness). A spare spool, backup reel handle and a power point adapter plug are also included. This product package will complement the original M-POW-R REEL® and Rod Combo.
Initiated by Dr. Roland “Doc” Kehr, former co-owner of the Lindy Little Joe Tackle Company, the M-POW-R reel was developed for Doc’s son Nathan, who has cerebral palsy and is unable to use his left arm and hand.
“We’re very excited about sharing this new technology with other disabled anglers,” said Dr. Kehr. “It’s enabled my son Nathan to fully experience the thrill of fighting and landing more and bigger fish, and we’re confident it will empower many more people facing physical challenges to truly appreciate and enjoy this great sport.”
Another angler to discover the versatility of the M-POW-R reel and new harness is John Vandercook, a passionate and discerning angler who lost his left arm in a motorcycle accident.
“I can do anything any other angler can do, it just takes me longer,” said Vandercook. “But the M-POW-R reel and harness now allows me to retrieve the bait or fight a fish without pressing the reel handle against my ribs to reel. For years I've focused on jig fishing and trolling, but the M-POW-R now makes it possible for me to fish bass, trout, whatever ... on the retrieve. As soon as that bait hits the water it's one push of the button and that bait is moving. In my experience, that's what gets strikes.”
Although he’s a fan of the 6’ 6” medium-action graphite M-POW-R rod, he champions the versatility the new harness affords, which allows him use of the M-POW-R reel on any rod he chooses, typically a St. Croix AVID or Legend Elite.
“Depending on what, where and how I’m fishing, I may want to use a longer, shorter, or heavier or lighter action rod. As we know, not every rod is perfect for every situation. The new M-POW-R allows me the flexibility and advantages of the M-POW-R reel no matter what.”
In addition to the new M-POW-R Reel® and Harness fishing package, the company
will continue to sell the original M-POW-R Reel® and Rod combo fishing package, which includes a two-piece medium action graphite rod to complement the reel and harness.
Visit the company website: mpowrfishing.com to see all of the accessories included in both fishing packages.
ABOUT
M-POW-R LLC is owned by Dr. Roland E. Kehr, Jr. of Brainerd, Minnesota. Dr. Kehr has practiced in Brainerd since 1971. He was a part owner of the Lindy-Little Joe Fishing Tackle Company for 28 years and served as Chairman of the Board during the years leading up to its sale to PRADCO Outdoor Products in 2008.
Dr. Kehr guided Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock hunters from around the country and Europe for four years for his friend Steve Grossman of Little Moran Game Farm. He later co-authored two hunting guide books with Mickey Johnson, The Wingshooter's Guide to Minnesota and The Wingshooter's Guide to Wisconsin, published by Wilderness Adventures Press of Belgrade, Montana.
Shortly before the Lindy Tackle Company was sold, Dr. Kehr developed the Shake-E-Blade and Rouser lures for the company. He later developed the BaitPuck Plus for Strikemaster Corporation. The royalties from that product are paid directly to Central Lakes College of Brainerd on behalf of a perpetual Nursing scholarship named after his late wife, Patricia Ann Kehr, BSN.
His current project, the M-POW-R powered reel goes back many years. As it turned out, the delay, if one could describe it as such, allowed for input from a number of fishing industry individuals which enhanced the final product.
Brad Weese Wins Divisional On Monongahela
In three days of undeniably some of the toughest fishing in divisional history, the West Virginian caught 19 pounds, 1 ounce to win the three-day event with 10 bass total.
His tactic focused on man-made current generated by the water release from navigational locks. Much of the tournament field of 78 anglers sharing boats locked upstream on the Monongahela into other fisheries. Not Weese, who intentionally remained within range of the discharge creating current in his area.
“That’s why I had such a good bite in the early morning,” said Weese, who fished for the Maryland B.A.S.S. Nation as a member of its the Garrett Bassers.
“It’s a long run into both pools so everyone was headed up there early.”
The current generated by the emptying of the 10,000-gallon lock chambers from either dam provided just enough moving water for his pattern. The bite went cold when the water returned to calm conditions.
In another wise move, Reese chose one lure capable of covering lots of water and quickly. The single bait enabled him to focus on one technique, instead of spending costly time changing lures and modifying presentations for the area.
His choice was a custom-made spinnerbait made by local acquaintance Brent Dodrill. The 1/4-ounce lure has a white skirt and head with twin gold Colorado blades.
“The presentation wasn’t anything special,” he said. “I slow -rolled the spinnerbait anywhere from 6 inches to 10 feet.”
In simple terms, Weese dictated his casts and retrieve based on the shoreline features. Casting targets included isolated laydowns and stretches with concentrations of wood on the bank.
“The key was keeping the bait in the water and not spending time running the river,” he added.
Weese spent most of the tournament in the same area:, a boat ramp he defined as a community hole. However, the appeal of making long runs by most of the tournament field left the area open to Weese.
The win was made sweeter for Weese because Maryland won the competition between the six states. Maryland finished with 88 pounds, 2 ounces, with Virginia taking second place with 74-9. New Jersey placed third with 63-6, and West Virginia took fourth with 62-7. Pennsylvania claimed fifth place with 57-14, and Delaware finished with 46-4 for sixth place. Scores were totaled based on the cumulative weight caught by each 14-angler team.
For the win, Maryland received a Skeeter/Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.
Jacob Jones and Austin Gaab of the Susquehanna Valley Fishing Club in Pennsylvania won the high school division. High school state champions fished for the final two days in the tournament under a model program that introduces students to tournament fishing at a higher level.
Weese will go to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship in November as the top angler from Maryland. Advancing with him is Fabian Rodriguez of Delaware; Michael McMahon of New Jersey; Chad Shutty of Pennsylvania; Brian Harold of Virginia; and Sammy Bounds of West Virginia.
Anglers earned the following sponsorship contingency awards:. Livingston Lures Leader Award: Weese earned the $250 award by leading the tournament on Day 2 with 13-7.
