Gagliardi Hoping To Climb At Least 7 Spots In Flw Tour Tournament On Pickwick Lake

Seven. That's the magic number for FLW Tour pro Anthony Gagliardi if he is to qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup – a stone's throw from his backyard – on South Carolina's Lake Murray in August.

Gagliardi has two tournaments to move up in the Angler of the Year standings to make the Cup on his home lake.

Currently 44th in the standings, the Prosperity, S.C., pro needs to get at least to 37th to be assured of a spot in the 2014 FLW Tour championship. A strong finish at Alabama's Pickwick Lake next week or at Kentucky Lake at the end of June should propel him into the top 37 anglers invited to the Forrest Wood Cup.

Actually, the top 35 anglers on the Tour qualify, but some double-qualify, so 37 is the base number Gagliardi is shooting for, although he admits he's dearly love to finish a little higher, especially if he can make it at Pickwick next week.

“The ranking Angler of the Year automatically gets a berth and Andy Morgan is up there now. Randall Tharp is pre-qualified because he won the Cup last year. If both of them stay in the top 35 then it goes to 37, so I still have to move up the same number of places,” Gagliardi said.

“I would like to be in a better situation, but I'm pretty pleased with the year I've had so far,” said Gagliardi, who finished 7th at Lake Hartwell in early March, 30th at Sam Rayburn in late March and 13th at Beaver Lake in April.

“I've been able to scratch and claw my way back up there to get the show going into these last two tournaments, but I can't have any slip-ups at all or that would be the end of it for my chances to make the Cup at Lake Murray.”

Gagliardi would really like to finish in the top 20 at Pickwick, so the pressure would be off when the Tour moves on to Kentucky Lake, where he has scored one of his four Tour wins.

“I'm not looking to make the 36th spot,” he said, however. “I don’t want it to be that close. I don't want to be counting points and watching the weights in the last tournament, I want to know when I weigh my fish at Kentucky Lake that I am in.”

Although his history at Pickwick would seem to indicate that he will still be needing to make up points by the time he gets to Kentucky Lake, Gagliardi is heading into the tournament next week with a lot of confidence.

His two previous Tour tournaments on the lake have resulted in a 46th place finish in 2012 and 49th in 2006, which was his worst finish on the way to winning Angler of the Year. He finished 13th in a FLW Series Eastern Division tournament in October 2007, but he was 66th in November two years earlier in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship.

“We've been there at different timesof the year, only once in the summer,” Gagliardi said. The lake is a whole lot more like Kentucky Lake at this stage with a love of 3-, 4-, and 5-pound fish in there.”

And, he added, conditions should be set up for the way he likes to fish next week.

“It's a really good summertime lake and by the time we get there I think the water will have warmed up and the majority of the fish will have moved out. There probably will also still be a lot of fish up shallow, so I imagine it will be a pretty good tournament for every body.”

Gagliardi said he will look for a topwater bite early in the morning, then concentrate on the deep-water fish the rest of the day during the tournament.

“I will be looking for the big schools of fish. I think my best chance is to get in that deep water, cruise around and see if I can get on a couple of good bites each day. That is the way I like to catch them this time of year. I have a lot more confidence doing that than I would be trying to put tougher some type of flipping pattern.”

Enough of those big bites at Pickwick, he said, would mean all he would have to do at the season-sender at Kentucky Lake is maintain his position and get ready to fish the Cup at Lake Murray.

Hefty Payback Awaits Anglers In Potash Fish Back Open Team Tournament On Clarks Hill

Fishermen are attracted to a tournament with a hefty payout – and they really love it when they feel like they are not only fishing for money but to support a worthwhile cause. A tournament with three worthy causes to go with serious prize money just about guarantees success.

That pretty much describes the Potash Corp Fish Back Open Team Tournament on Clarks Hill Lake Saturday, which features a hefty payback down the line from $10,000 for first place along with a trifecta of causes to support – cancer, kids and conservation.

“We kill three birds with one stone,” said tournament coordinator Joey Bruyninckx of Potash Corp, the world’s largest fertilizer enterprise by capacity.

“We have two primary charities – the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance and the North Augusta Youth Fishing Team. The third piece of the puzzle is the environmental impact which we address by putting fish habitat in the lake.”

In the inaugural Potash Fish Back Tournament last year each boat was required to install an artificial fish habitat structure at either their first or second stop of the first day of the tournament. The teams put out more than 150 new artificial habitat units during the event.

The pre-fab structures made of vinyl siding cemented into a PVC container are designed to sink to the bottom and land upright to resemble a bush. Although the tournament has been streamlined into a one-day event this year, Bruyninckx said the idea was a good fit and it is being done again this year.

The primary mission of the GOCA is to increase awareness and educate Georgia’s women of all ages and their families, as well as the healthcare community, about the risks and symptoms leading to early detection.

Bruyninckx said reducing the event to one day and increasing the payout has increased the entry so far this year, and he hopes other tweaks to the tournament will result in even bigger turnouts in years to come.

“We had 122 boats at registration Tuesday evening and we've had two late registrations since then. Last year this time we had 105 boats registered,” he said.

“Last year we sold $1 raffle tickets and the proceeds from that along with the proceeds from food sales benefit the charities. Potash puts up a fixed amount of money, guarantees the prize money, and in addition we raise money through local sponsors,” Bruyninckx said. “But this year we are selling $1 and $5 raffle tickets and we have got some really good prizes to give away. More money for the charities is the ultimate goal.”

Bruyninckx said that while the first place prize was dropped from $12,000 to $10,000 this year, the payback is being spread farther down the line, with $5,000 going to second place, $2,500 to third place and $1,000 to Big Fish.

“Last year we gave $10,000 aggregate to the charities and this year we hope to do more, but I won't be disappointed if we end up doing only $8,000 this year because at the end of the day we are making it a better tournament all the way around, not only for the anglers, but for the spectators and everybody involved.”

“As the tournament grows over the years, the amount going to the charities will continue to grow through expanded participation,” he added.

Entry fee for the tournament is $150 per boat, with a late registration fee of $25. To register or get more information contact Jon Hair at The Tackle Shop in Martinez, Ga., 706-432-8225, [email protected], or Chris Rodwell, 706-829-3926.

Fishing could be tough for the anglers in the last major local tournament on Clarks Hill before the fall, Bruyninckx said.

“The schooling has king of died off and I think the fish have gone back deep and are located on humps and shoals. I think you will see a lot of guys throwing a worm, a jig or a crankbait Saturday,” he said.

Wright, Coble Hoping Strong Finish In Anglers Choice Will Be Ticket To Bassmaster Classic

David Wright and Jeff Coble figure they have a pretty good chance of fishing their way into the Bassmaster Classic – if they can figure the fish out in the Anglers Choice Virginia-North Carolina double-header tournament on Kerr Reservoir this weekend.

“These are the last two tournaments and we figure if we do pretty good in these we could get up to the top three in points,” said Wright. The team is currently 6th in the North Carolina Division standings. Wright, of Lexington, N.C., and Coble of Manson, N.C., finished 19th at Falls March 23, 9th at Kerr April 6 and 17th at High Rock May 24 in the North Carolina Division. In the Virginia Division they finished 6th at Kerr April 5 and 69th at Smith Mountain Lake May 10.

“They will let one team go for every 50 boats to an end of the year tournament to qualify for the Classic. We figure they will have three or four spots, so that's why we are fishing the Anglers Choice tournaments, that and the fact they give away a boat at the end of the year,” he said.

The problem Wright and Coble, who have fished in three Bassmaster Classics, might have – along with all the other teams fishing this weekend – is a lack of quality bites.

“Fishing up there has not been too good,” Wright said. “I saw that 13 pounds, 9 ounces won the BFL tournament there last week and that does not speak too well for what might be happening in the lake. I think there are a lot of 1- and 2-pounders biting.”

Their goal, he said, is to try to catch 11 to 12 pounds both days of the double-header.

“We can't win with that, but it would give us a decent chance,” Wright said.

Kerr has seen a rebound in numbers of bass in recent years, Wright said, but sometimes that does not translate into bigger bags at tournament weigh-ins.

“During the week the fish are shallow and you can really catch them, then on Saturday with all those boats running around those fish get lockjaw.”

Their strategy, he said will be to fish shallow very early and move a little deeper as the sun gets up.

Beginning last year the Anglers Choice Team series was split into two divisions, one for Virginia and one for North Carolina, with four qualifiers in each division.

“The other aspect of out trail this year is that we are going to have two separate Classics, with a Ranger Boat for the winners on the Virginia side and a Triton for the winners on the North Carolina side. So, with the opportunity to fish both Classics, guys have two chances to win a boat,” said tournament director Chris Lucas.

The Virginia Division Classic will be held Oct. 4-5 on Smith Mountain Lake and the North Carolina Division Classic will be held Oct. 25-26 on High Rock Lake, which is in Wright's backyard.

Carden, Rutland Hoping Shallow Bite Turns On For Alabama Bass Trail Tournament On Lay Lake

Normally Coby Carden would be licking his chops at the prospect of fishing Lay Lake in June. After all the lake is practically his backyard and he grew up fishing the lake.

But, with the Alabama Bass Trail South Division coming to Lay Lake this Saturday, Carden said the lake is not fishing like it typically does this time of year.

“I am excited about it because this is when I do my best on the lake, but I just don't have them figured out yet,” said Carden, whose teammate in the South Division is Chris Rutland.

“Typically, you can still be catching a lot of fish shallow. The spawn is over and a lot of fish have moved out, but you can always catch quality fish in the grass all year long,” Carden said. “But we had a warm up and then a cold snap, and since that last cold snap the fish have not been positioned for us. They are just not up in the grass.”

Carden said the fish apparently are in transition, kind of in between and that has made shallow fishing tough.

“They are just in a funk. They have not committed to either one of their normal places for this time of year.”

The team is currently ranked 4th after posting three top 20 finishes, including a second place finish on the Alabama River a month ago. They finished 14th on the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta March 1 to start the season, but could only get an 82nd place finish on lake Eufaula March 15, then recovered with a 20th place on Lake Jordan April 19.

“We've been blessed. Unfortunately, Eufaula just killed us. Had we done a little better there we'd be a lot closer to the top,” Carden said.

The tournament Saturday on Lay Lake is the final Alabama South tournament of the inaugural series before the Championship Oct. 10-11 on Lewis Smith Lake. The North Division has one more tournament scheduled in the regular season, June 21 on Logan Martin Lake.

Each tournament has a guaranteed first prize of $10,000, plus $23,000 to the top 20 places and $500 to big fish. There are also numerous bonus packages available to winning and placing anglers.

The Top 50 teams for both the Northern and Southern Divisions will advance to the 2014 ABT Team Championship Oct. 10-11 at Smith Lake in Jasper. Plus, the top 25 student boats overall will be in the final event. To be eligible for the championship, teams must enter all five qualifying events in their respective division.

The grand prize for the no-entry fee championship is a fully-rigged Phoenix 619 Pro Bass Boat with a 150-horsepower Mercury Outboard, valued at $40,000. Adding to that excitement level is an opportunity to advance to the Bassmasters Team Championship and possibly earn a berth in the Bassmaster Classic.

Kay Donaldson, program director for the Alabama Bass Trail, also announced the 2015 ABT tournament schedule. The 10-lake, team-style tournament series will be held on ten of the lakes of the Alabama Bass Trail beginning next February 14, with the championship to be held on the 11th lake October 9-10, 2015. The full schedule and details are available on the ABT website; http://www.alabamabasstrail.org/tournament-series/next-season/

“The Alabama Bass Trail tournament format has been wildly successful, pulling anglers from six states and creating an economic impact of over $1 million in the areas around the Trail’s lakes,” said Donaldson. “I am so proud of what our state has accomplished while promoting the sport of bass fishing. We have showcased these lakes to the world and provided a needed boost to the local economies.”

Fish the Rat-L-Trap Open on Lake Toho!

Should be a busy blast off at the Rat-L-Trap Open on Toho June 29th. photo by Vance McCullough

Lake Toho has a well-deserved reputation as a trophy bass factory and a top tournament lake. Right now the water is down in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season. That means tons of bass are staging along the deep edges of whatever vegetation they prefer, offshore hydrilla being chief among these.

That puts fish in a prime position to strike lipless crankbaits.

That puts anglers in a prime position to take advantage of an opportunity to fish the Rat-L-Trap Open on the famous lake Sunday, June 29th.

Entry fee is only $100 and payback is 100% to 1 out of each 5 boats. First place is worth a projected $3,000, based on 150 entries. Big bass side pot is $20.

There will be on-site registration from 3-6 P.M. and a 6 P.M. pre-tournament meeting at Big Toho Marina on Saturday, the 28th.

Bassmaster College Regional Takes Anglers To Remote, Unknown Watts Bar Lake

Tournament Director Hank Weldon (far left) will bring the excitement of collegiate angling to Watts Bar Lake next week. photo by Vance McCullough

As many as 100 collegiate teams are expected to find their way to remote Watts Bar Reservoir to compete in the upcoming Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional June 12-13.

Located near Dayton, TN Watts Bar is a TVA lake. That may be the biggest clue most of the anglers have as far as how to approach the fishery. Few have any experience on the lake.

One angler who has spent some time on Watts Bar is Jackson Minnich, the vice president of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville bass club.

“Honestly, it is kind of out there in the middle of nowhere,” Minnich said. “It is one of my favorite lakes to fish. I just wish I got to go there more often. The fishing stays pretty constant for me. Every time I go, I usually catch quite a few bass.”

Minnich expects a 3-pound-per-fish average to carry teams into the Top 10. Twenty pounds per day may be needed to win.

“There are big fish there, but you are not going to catch them with the same consistency as you would at Chickamauga or Kentucky Lake or somewhere like that,” said Minnich, before adding that Watts Bar is full of 2- to 3-pound largemouth.

As for patterns that may come into play, “A lot of people think Watts Bar is really a deep lake, but there is usually a consistent shallow bite too,” Minnich said. Flipping to shallow cover should be productive during the regional.

“There are a lot of humps and quite a few ledges too, so there is a lot of opportunity to fish offshore there.

“We have had kind of a late winter and cold spring, so it will be somewhere between postspawn and summertime. We have had some rain events, but the cold fronts more than anything have kind of messed up the fishing.”

Temperatures throughout the month of May have swung wildly from highs in the 90s to lows in the 30s.

Right now the lake is near summer pool and water clarity is described as slightly stained.

If the city of Dayton (population 6,180) rings a bell, it was the site of the famous Scopes ‘Monkey’ Trial of 1925 wherein the idea of evolution was pitted against the concept of Divine Creation. No matter how the bass got there, our collegians’ debate will center on how to catch 5 of the biggest each day in next week’s Regional tourney.

Haynes Wins Rayovac Tourney on Kentucky Lake

Randy Haynes of Counce, TN brought 27 pounds, 10 ounces to the scale during Saturday’s final round to win the Rayovac FLW Series Central Division tournament on Kentucky Lake with a 3-day total weight of 75-5.

Haynes said he burned more than 40 gallons of gas each day as he captured his 5th Rayovac Series win of his career. On Saturday he burned even more.  “I put a lot of practice in and yesterday it felt like my fish down south were going away. I was coming out of Jonathan Creek this morning and three-quarters of the way out I wasn’t sure if I was going to go right or left. I went down south and fished two spots for about thirty minutes to clear my mind, then I went back up north toward the dam and I knew I had made the right decision.”

Haynes elaborated on the difference in the two areas. “Down south my spots were mostly 12 feet deep on top and fell off into 18 to 25 feet of water. Up north, they were 18 to 23 feet deep and dropped off into a flat or down into the river channel.

=“I caught several fish down south, but I only kept one that was about three and a half pounds because I didn’t want to have to start culling. A lot of times my windows to catch fish would only be two or three minutes long and I needed to keep up with them and not waste time culling. I didn’t even have to catch a bass to make them move. If they bit they were moving.”

Haynes is humbled by his recent success in FLW tournaments, including this win. “I can’t believe this is happening. The competition is getting so tough, and guys really understand ledge fishing. It is so hard to stay on top. Depth finders are getting better, and there are more guys out on the ledges than ever before. Especially Kentucky Lake – it has some of the best ledge fishermen in the country.”

Haynes caught the bulk of his weight on a Profound Outdoors Z-Boss 20, a Strike King 10XD, a variety of swimbaits and a 1-ounce Profound Outdoors jig.

Tim Webb of Olpe, Kan., won the co-angler division and a Ranger Z117C with an Evinrude or Mercury outboard. His 3-day total weight was 61 pounds, 4 ounces.

Defoe Finishes Strong, Wins Bassmaster Open On Douglas

Teaser image:

Ott DeFoe of Knoxville, Tenn., wins the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open presented by Allstate on Douglas Lake. Bringing in a three-day total of 62 pounds, 5 ounces, DeFoe earns a berth in the 2015 Bassmaster Classic.

Ott DeFoe saved his best for last and it turned out to be the best of the tournament. His 24 pound, 1 ounce closing statement gave him a decisive win on his home waters of Douglas Lake with a 3-day total of 62-5 - nearly a 10 pound margin of victory.

This was the first Bassmaster Open of the 2014 Northern Division season. It marked the 4th Bassmaster tournament DeFoe has fished on the lake. In addition to a PAA event, this was his 5th tourney at home. He has always done well, but this time he topped the field.

DeFoe fished further up the lake each day. Today he wrung 37 bass out of his best spots to compile his final weight. He said the bass offered a moving target as far as patterns and techniques were concerned. “It was really all about changing. I caught all of my fish deep the first day, and I caught them off of a couple of different places primarily cranking a Rapala DT16 crankbait in Caribbean shad. I also caught some on a Terminator football jig.”

On Friday DeFoe had to move up the lake a bit to find his limit, another good sack that gave him the lead.

Today he concentrated all of his efforts up that way and simply crushed ‘em.  “I changed a little bit again today and fished some different areas,” he said. “Then we got into one place, and we just hammered them.”

For the 2nd year in a row, Dave Mullins finished runner-up in a Bassmaster Open on his home lake. The Elite Series pro tallied 52-11 over 3 days.

As did DeFoe, Mullins found the cure for crowded conditions was to run up the river. He fished ‘up’ on Friday and Saturday and improved his standing each day.

Mullins relied on 3 lures: a Strike King Sexy Swimmer swimbait, a Strike King 6XD and a Strike King 10 XD.

“I caught most of my fish on a Strike King 6XD crankbait, and then today we had enough room down the lake, so I ran down and caught my big one on a Strike King 10XD first thing,” Mullins said.

Daniel Beebe Jr. of Niota, TN won the co-angler division with 30-7. One lure produced all of his fish each day:  a Basstrix swimbait with a ¾ oz. Revenge jighead. The color of the swimbait? Tennessee Shad, of course.

“We fished a big flat today and just wore them out there,” said the 44-year-old computer repairman.

Big bass honors went to Elite Series Pro Aaron Martens who caught a 7-1 the first day.

Defoe Moves Into Lead At Open On Douglas

Ott DeFoe has always placed high, but not yet won a B.A.S.S. event on his home water, Douglas Lake. Today he took a big step toward changing that statistic. With a 2-day total weight of 38-4, DeFoe leads the Bassmaster Northern Open on Douglas as the tournament heads into its final day.

Consistency has been the key for DeFoe as he weighed 19-3 on Day 1 and 19-1 today – an accomplishment that DeFoe admits is not easy to pull off. “This lake is very hard to be consistent on. A couple of those 4 1/2-, 5- or 5 1/2-pound bites are what makes you have a 20- to 21-pound day. So, it is hard to be consistent here with all 4-pounders.”

DeFoe says the lake is fishing tougher than it should. In practice he declined to beat on spots he knew should produce. He only spent about 10 hours on the lake during practice.

Today he ran some water he never fished on Thursday. That’s where he found his 3 biggest bass.

Local angler Ricky Shepherd, of Mosheim, Tenn., moved into second place by catching the heaviest limit (20-10) of the day. “These fish have changed on the lake this week because of the traffic, and they have positioned themselves to where they are easier for me to catch,” said the 52-year-old Shepherd who has a two-day total weight of 35-14. The warehouse manager said he threw a swimbait yesterday but changed his strategy today and hit about 25 spots to catch his hefty limit.

Rounding out the Top 5 in the pro division are Todd Schmitz, Goshen, Ind., third, 35-3; Dewayne Wilson, La Follette, Tenn., fourth, 34-14; and Brent Ehrler, Redlands, Calif., fifth, 34-9.

This is the 2nd Bassmaster event Wilson has ever fished. His weight gives him a 1 pound lead over tour-level pros Brent Ehrler and Shin Fukae who are tied for 2nd with 20-12 apiece.

Wilson, owner of Dixie Custom Rods, will get to test his products against a field stacked with some of the best pros from the FLW Tour and Bassmaster Elite Series this week.

Wilson said he didn’t get a bite after 10 A.M. Part of the problem was a crowd of anglers that grew on his prime spot as the day went on. “It got so bad I just let them have it,” said Wilson, who left the area to fish elsewhere.

Due to a number of factors, including fishing pressure, Wilson is unsure what to expect Friday. “I might have 6 pounds, or I might have 20 again.”

Wendlant Suffers Heart Attack, Withdraws From Remainder Of Flw Tour

Clark Wendlant has won 3 FLW Angler of the Year titles and qualified for 15 Forrest Wood Cups. He won't make it to the big dance this year, nor will he fish the Tour events on Pickwick and Kentucky Lakes.

Wendlant suffered a heart attack around 3 A.M. Monday. "I've never had any heart problems before, but any time you have a chest pain you wonder to yourself if you’re having a heart attack. Usually you aren’t – or at least that’s been the case with me,” said Wendlandt. “This time it felt different, though. My whole body hurt, and there was a lot of pressure on my upper arms and even in my jaw.”

A doctor was able to install a stint in the blocked artery that caused the heart attack without performing major surgery.

But doctors advised Wendlant to take it easy for 6-to-8 weeks – a time frame that extends beyond the dates of the final FLW Tour tournaments, both of which take place in June.

“I’m going to do what the doctor tells me, but he said I should make a full recovery and that’s what I’m counting on,” Wendlandt said. “I was planning on fishing a couple of B.A.S.S. Opens later on, but I’m going to play that by ear now. But I do look forward to fishing the [Walmart FLW] Tour next year.”

Smiley and Anderson take the Tom's Marine TT on Cherokee with 20.97 Lbs

Teaser image:

Records Are Set As Smiley & Anderson Win

While we haven't tracked it there's no doubt the May 24th tournament set records for number of fish caught and weight per boat in a Toms Marine Team Trail Tournament. In all 121 boats took to Cherokee Lake to fish this event and weighed in a stagering 458 fish weighing in at over 1160-pounds. This means that most of the field had a good day but none better than Tim Smiley and Mike Anderson shown below with their great 20.97-pound bag.

This catch earned them the $2,500 first place prize. Bobby Chambers and Justin McClain were in close pursuit with a great 19.53-pound bag winning them $1,500. Wesley Crowe and Mark Surgenor finished third with a 17.16-pound limit that included the tournaments lunker largemouth and earned them $1,450. Fourth place and it's $600 prize went to Allen Smith and Josh Roark with 17.13-pounds. Rounding out the top and winning $540 with 16.44-pounds was the team of Jimmy Clark and Ronnie Turner. Complete results, standings and photos are now posted on the Toms Marine web site at http://www.tomsmarinetn.com

We invite everyone to come out and join us for our next event on June 7th on Douglas Lake at Shady Grove..

Stacey King steps away from FLW Tour to concentrate on cancer treatment

Veteran pro Stacey King of Reeds Spring, MO was enjoying a good season on the FLW Tour. He was 26th in Angler of the Year points after posting 3 Top 30 appearances in the first 4 events.

King will miss the last 2 tournaments because he needs to undergo cancer treatment. "They are going to take out my tonsils and also take 3 biopsies," said King. "There's a chance the cancer could be in my tonsils, but they'll be able to tell more after I've had the operation."

Early detection is always important when battling cancer. King's wake-up call came in the form of swollen lymph nodes about 6 months ago which eventually lead to CT scans and biopsies.

Much is still unknown at this point, but we at AnglersChannel.com wish Stacey a successful and speedy treatment cycle and we certainly hope to see him on the water again in 2015.

Fishing 'fantastic' For Boat Us Collegiate Bass Championship On Pickwick

An awesome week for nearly 400 college anglers from across the United States and Canada is underway at Pickwick Lake in Alabama, according to Wade Middleton, director of Collegiate Operations for Careco TV, LLC.

“We could not have better weather for the ninth BoatUS Collegiate Bass Championship, and the fishing has been reported to be fantastic,” said Middleton, co-founder of the Association of Collegiate Anglers, a division of CarecoTV.

In association with the The Bass Federation, ACA is a sanctioning body developed to facilitate growth, development, and structure within competitive collegiate bass fishing. The ACA provides support to dozens of school-operated regional events nationwide and owns and operates the Cabela's Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, the largest participatory collegiate tournament circuit in the country.

“The event continues to get bigger and bigger. We will have over 100 schools and nearly 400 college anglers participating this week,” Middleton said. “We are making television for NBC Sports and the Pursuit Channel. More than 20 companies in the industry are providing services and support to the college kids.”

Middleton said the action this week can be followed online at www.CollegiateBassChampionship.com, which features streaming live coverage and live blogs.

He also said fans can expect to be treated to some outstanding fishing by the collegiate anglers.

“The fishing has been reported to be fantastic. Most of the kids we have been talking to are predicting it will take over 40 pounds over two days to win and some are saying it will take at least 45 pounds. They are catching the fish from as shallow as less than a foot out to as deep as 25 feet.”

The lake's large size naturally fishes big, but its varied options and huge fish population will spread the teams out far and wide. Add Lake Wilson, along with Tennessee waters, both part of tournament waters, and the opportunities and possibilities become even greater.

The collegiate anglers are urged to join The Bass Federation before the competition begins Thursday. The fee for college anglers is $35 and if at least six members of a college fishing club join the club is covered by TBF insurance during their club events.

Membership has an even greater advantage for the winning team in the BoatUS championship this week. The winning Boat US Collegiate team is invited to fish the TBF National Championship held each spring in conjunction with an FLW Tour event. The TBF National Championship is the quickest way to qualify for the BFL All-American and the FLW Cup as well as winning TBF's top prize, "The Living the Dream Package"

The package also puts team members on the FLW Tour for one year with the use of a new Ranger Boat and Chevy Truck as well as entry fees and expense money to see if they have what it takes to be a pro angler.

Collegiate anglers are also eligible for a 40 percent discount on the BoatUS ANGLER "Unlimited TRAILER ASSIST Roadside Assistance Membership." The $29 fee covers 24/7 dispatch for trailer breakdowns, flat tire assistance, lock-out service, jump-starts and more.

"Every year we get calls from teams driving to the Championship that have had something happen and are in a bind on the side of the road. With this program, BoatUS ANGLER will be there to help and give them a chance to reach the event on time so they can compete in the biggest event in college fishing. So why would you risk not being a part of this program and getting left on the side of the road?" Middleton asked.

“Joining BoatUS ANGLER at the exclusive rate also qualifies you to register for our 'Weigh-To-Win' contingency program which could be worth up to $1,000 at the Championship event on Lake Pickwick. This program gives you the opportunity to earn even more bonus money at sanctioned team, College, BASS, and FLW events.”

This year's event features a wide range of activities, including Yamaha Angler Appreciation night Tuesday, Ranger Boats Demo Rides, dinners hosted by Costa and Temple Fork Outfitters, and the collegiate angler appreciation banquet Wednesday night, all to be held at the Marriott Shoals Resort in Florence, Ala.

The event will wrap up Friday with the crowning of the 2014 championship collegiate team.

Cherokee Dangerously Low, But Fishing Excellent For Tom's Marine Tournament Saturday

Fishing is expected to be outstanding for the Tom's Marine Team Trail tournament on Cherokee Lake Saturday – for numbers, but not necessarily for size, according to Richard McMaster, tournament director.

“Fishing has been excellent on Cherokee. Not a lot of real big bags are being caught, but there are definitely a lot of bags being caught,” McMaster said. “There are a lot of fish being brought to the scales on Cherokee.”

McMaster said there were 121 boats in the last Tom's Marine tournament on Cherokee two weeks ago and at least that many are expected for Saturday's tournament.

“It's been really consistent on Cherokee. Every year the number of boats for our Cherokee tournaments is around 130,” he said.

While anglers can expect to catch a lot of fish Saturday, he said, they should be aware the lake can be pretty dangerous right now because of extremely low water levels.

“Cherokee is 14 feet below what it should be this time of year. We've had a shortage of rain to fill the lake and that means there is a lot of danger out there,” McMaster said. “There are a lot of stump piles and rock beds exposed that people are not used to having to worry about.”

Although the water is extremely low, McMaster said there should be a good flipping bite Saturday, “but not anything topwater unless you find some homemade brushpiles or crappie beds. The fish have spawned and they are moving out from the banks to open water. They are easy to catch, but they don't have a lot of weight since they just spawned.”

McMaster said the fish are coming off the spawning flats and hanging in ditches in 8 to 12 feet of water.

“The biggest thing is dragging football jigs and working Carolina-rigged lizards,” he said.

He also noted that the points race has tightened up with several teams well within striking distance. Three teams are within 12 points of each other at the top of the standings, led by Ron Hyatt and Johnny Parks. Adrian Rasnake and Rodney Ray are 5 points back in second place and Luke Boles and Donnie Absher are third, 7 points behind the second place team.

“It's not a runaway this year. We like to see that. Plus people are trying real hard this year, weighing in fish, trying to make the Bassmasters.”

McMaster said anglers fishing the Tom's Marine Team Trail this year will have a chance to qualify for the 2015 Bassmaster Classic. Teams can qualify for a chance to fish for the Classic by paying a $10 per angler membership fee. Two teams, based on points, could qualify to fish the Bass Team Classic Championship, where the top three teams will break up into individual boats to fish for a berth in the Bassmaster Classic.

McMaster also announced that Tom's Marine is bringing back a summer nighttime tournament this year after a three-year absence. The night tournament will be held July 12 on Cherokee Lake with a three-fish limit.

The rest of the 2014 schedule includes: June 7, Douglas Lake, Shady Grove; July 12, Cherokee Lake, 25E Bridge; Sept. 13, Douglas Lake, Shady Grove; and Oct. 25-25, Douglas Lake, Shady Grove and Cherokee Lake, 25E Bridge.

The entry fee per tournament is $100, plus a $10 lunker fee. New incentives for the Tom's Marine Team Trail in 2014 include :
– Toms Marine will pay $250 to anyone who wins out of a boat purchased new from Toms Marine since 20110.

– Glow Max will pay the winner of the night tournament $250 in cash and $250 merchandise if they use Glow Max black lights in their boat. In addition, Toms Marine will pay the winner an additional $100 if the Glow Max black lights were purchased from and installed by Toms Marine.
– Linex has teamed up with Toms Marine Team Trail to sponsor a drawing for a new spray-in Linex bed liner this season. Anyone making a purchase from Linex and letting them know you are a member of Toms Marine Team Trail will be entered into this drawing to be held at the end of the 2014 regular season.

Toughest Fishing Of Year Expected On High Rock For Anglers Choice Team Trail Saturday

Between Memorial Day Weekend boat traffic and the bass being in a post-spawn sulk fishing is likely to be pretty tough for the Anglers Choice Marine Team Trail North Carolina Division tournament on High Rock Lake Saturday.

“I think it will probably be one of the toughest tournaments on High Rock this year,” said veteran tournament angler David Wright of Lexington, N.C., who calls High Rock his home lake. “Last week I saw quite a few bass guarding fry and that tells me the majority have spawned and it might be pretty tough to catch them. It's usually that way after they spawn – they get kind of finicky. They just swim around the banks and don't want to bite.”

Wright, who has won nine FLW Outdoors tournaments and placed in many others for more than $367, 500 in win money, said the lake is down about 7/10 of a foot and may be down even more by the weekend. With the current level borderline for fishing shoreline buck bushes, by Saturday that pattern probably will not be available.

In fact, he said, a specific pattern probably will not come into play Saturday.

“I think whoever wins it probably will just go down the bank and catch fish,” said Wright who is fishing the Anglers Choice North Carolina Division. “In the last few years one of the most stable things has been to fish the docks on High Rock.”

As tough as the fishing is expected to be, however, Wright said somebody will catch them.

“Somebody will probably catch 20 pounds. Somebody will catch five good ones.”

Chris Lucas, tournament director, said registration will start about 5:15 a.m. Saturday at the Southmont Wildlife Area Access.

“Pre-registration is looking pretty good,” he said. “It's not going to be one of our biggest tournaments, but it is getting on up there.”

Noting that the Anglers Choice season is in the second half, a double-header will be held on Kerr Reservoir June 7-8 with anglers able to fish the Virginia Division qualifier on Saturday and the North Carolina Division qualifier on Sunday.

“Our anglers really like this opportunity because fishing a trail is an investment and it helps cut down on expenses for the fishermen,” Lucas said..

So, with the opportunity to fish both Classics, guys have two chances to win a boat.”

'Little Fish' tourneys offer BIG fun

Ready to do a LITTLE fishing? This fish would be money at a Little Fish tourney!

Little fish could net you a lot of money . . . if you are fishing one of Bienville Plantation's Little Fish Tournaments.

While most tourneys reward the guys with the heaviest sacks of bass, these tournaments reward the team that puts the greatest number of fish in the livewell, as long as they are shorter than the maximum length.

In order to win one of these events you should aim for the century mark - 100 bass in a day. Sometimes it takes a good bit more. Sometimes it 'only' takes 80 fish to win.

The idea is to thin the population in one of the South's most famous lakes - Lake 14 at Bienville Plantation. The fishery is so fertile that tons of small bass need to be relocated to nearby ponds in order to maintain trophy size for the remaining fish.

Every lake has its carrying capacity and maximum nutrient load, so you can have lots of small fish or fewer, but larger, bass. Due to the extreme fertility of the reclaimed phosphate mines, Bienville's lakes offer the best of both worlds, but fisheries management is still required.

"We could just shock them up and move them ourselves," said Dock Glawson who oversees the property, "but we figured 'heck, why not let some people come in here and have the fun of doing it with a hook and line?'."

While a day on the famed lake would typically cost much more, the entry fee for a Little Fish Tournament is $150. Total payback is 50% to 1 out of every 7 boats.

The dates for this year's Little Fish Tournaments are:

5/31/14

6/14/14

6/28/14

7/12/14

7/26/14

8/09/14

9/13/14

9/27/14

Participation is open to everybody, but space is limited so call 386-397-1989.

Greg Hackney on Winning

Greg Hackney nearly won the Bassmaster Elite Series event on Lake Dardanelle this past week. He led for two days and fell short at yesterday's final weigh in, finishing 3rd. The timing is interesting because exactly a week before the tournament began, Vance McCullough was in Hackney's boat and asked him this question: "What does it take to win a bass tournament?" Hear Hackney's insigthful answer, based on years of experience at the sport's highest level.

PIEDMONT BASS CLASSICS TEAM TRAIL QUALIFIER #5 RESULTS - Falls Lake - May 17, 2014

Teaser image:

1st Place: Jay Garrard & Mark Herndon...5 bass...23.90 lbs1st Place: Jay Garrard & Mark Herndon...5 bass...23.90 lbs

The Piedmont Bass Classics Team Bass Spring Mini Trail final qualifier #5 was fished by 32 teams on a day
with the water rising hard at Falls Lake.

It was unseasonably cool that morning but ended up being a nice and comfortable 70 degrees at weighin. The winds were very light that morning getting up to about 12mph in the afternoon. Water temps averaged 77 degrees. The bass showed signs of post spawn and even with the rising water bit pretty good. The water was up about 5 feet leaving some spawning fish in deeper water and the post spawn bass looking for food in the bushes and lower tree branches! Most of the fish were caught on creature jigs and senkos with others caught on spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and crankbaits in 1 to 6 feet of water.

Jay Garrard of Durham & Mark Herndon of Bahama caught 5 nice bass weighing a total of 23.90 lbs. taking 1st Place, 1st Place TWT and the Tow Boats US Member Bonus for a total of $1,157 in winnings.

2nd Place went to David Lynch & Daniel Everwine of Siler City, with 5 bass weighing 23.05 lbs., taking home a total of $436. Big fish for the day was caught by the team of Hal Abshire & Ethan Cox weighing in at 6.74 lbs and winning them $320 in prize money! Numerous bass over 6 lbs. were brought to the scales!

78 bass were weighed in for a total of 256 pounds. This averaged right at 3.28 lbs. a fish and they were nice and healthy looking. Fishing at Falls will only get better in the weeks to come!

I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support these trails. Our next tournament will be the 2014 Boats Unlimited NC Team Tournament Bass Trail Final Qualifier #7, Saturday, May 31st at Jordan Lake out of Farrington Point Wildlife Ramp.

Keith Carson (2nd from left) and John Cox win the 25th Annual Wolfson Tournament

Getting there is half the fun. Sometimes, it’s the better part of the challenge too.

John Cox and Keith Carson made a long run over wind-whipped waters in an aluminum boat to fish an hour-and-a-half. It was all the time they would need to outrun the other 447 boats, on the water and on the leader board, and win the 25th Annual Wolfson Children’s Hospital Bass Tournament.

Cox and Carson caught 5 bass that weighed 30.14 pounds and won the top prize of $10,000.

Better yet, they helped to support a great cause. The Wolfson tournament has generated more than two million dollars for the hospital over the past quarter of a century. Local professional anglers often fish the Wolfson when their major league tournament schedule does not require them to be elsewhere. Cox is an FLW Tour pro. He has won at bass fishing’s highest level of competition. But today’s effort was worth more than the paycheck. “Any time there’s this kind of tournament, to help out the kids, everybody should come out to them,” said Cox as Carson nodded in agreement.

“We made a super-long run,” said Cox. “It was amazing how it all worked out.”

The duo braved 3-to-4-foot waves as they crossed massive Lake George. That makes for a sporty ride in any boat but lightweight aluminum rigs can be tossed about especially hard compared to long, heavy fiberglass boats. The morning ride wasn’t particularly bad but the ride back to weigh in had Cox and Carson hanging in and hanging on.

The Crestliner boat and 150hp 4-stroke Mercury outboard performed well on the 180-mile round trip which required 2 stops for gas. “We made it back with 10 minutes to spare,” noted Carson who drove the boat and, as Cox pointed out, “at least had the steering wheel to hang onto.”

Once they pulled into their fishing hole - a depression in a field of pencil reeds – Cox caught their biggest bass on his 3rd cast. He knew exactly where to pitch his beaver-style bait. “We had them staked-out,” said Carson about the spawning bass. “We went and found them on Thursday so we ran straight there. John caught the first one. It was about seven-and-a-half pounds. We caught the rest of them within the next hour. We knew where they were.”

Cox and Carson added some extra weight on their return trip. “We were coming back and flipped into a mat and caught a 4-pounder,” said Cox. They didn’t know it at the time, but they would have won even without that final fish. Their margin of victory was nearly 8 pounds.

Matt Beck and Jim Denton were the runners-up with 22.40 pounds and a check for $4,000. “We just went to (Lake) George, worked our way back,” said Denton before adding, “We caught one a crankbait; we caught one on just about everything. It was one of those days.”

Denton noted that he and Beck couldn’t fish their spots in George because of waves that pounded the area so they “punted”. The team executed on their opportunities. “We had 8 bites all day. We caught all 8 of them.”

Dennis Redd and Tommy Boston placed 3rd with 21.09 pounds. Their efforts were rewarded with a check for $3,000. “We started out north, went all the way to Green Cove Springs,” said Redd. The Lake City residents got after it early and caught their fish on frogs and spinnerbaits. Watermelon/red was the hot frog color according to Boston.

“We had them all by about 10 o’clock,” said Redd. “It died after 10. We caught one last fish about 3 o’clock today. We just fished grass points. I found some fish on Wednesday so we went up to where I found fish on points Wednesday and fished our way back to Palatka.”

Casey Geiger and Loren Murwin were 4th with 20.58 pounds.

Steven Nelson and Randy Cable had 20.18 pounds. They edged-out Eric Lewis and Phil Cury (20.17 pounds) for the 5th spot by 0.01 pounds.

William Boyd, Jr. and E.J. Bryant won big bass honors with a specimen that weighed 9.67 pounds.

Stanley Hunt and Rhonda Thagard won Thursday’s Lads & Lasses tourney with 27.99 pounds including the day’s biggest fish at 10.51 pounds.

Lee Stalvey, Jr. and Sara Stalvey placed 2nd with 20.49. Stanley Williams and Susan Marshall were 3rd with 20.48.

Michael Strange and Mark Blevins won Friday’s VIP tourney with 24.48 pounds. The also caught the biggest bass of the entire week at 11.75 pounds. Many folks said it looked bigger than that, but Tournament Director Mike Oglesbee, who agreed that the fish looked bigger, said “I had just had the scale certified that morning.”

Oglesbee keeps his scales accurate as he runs the OGS Tournament trail – more info at OGSTournamentTrails.com.

Jason Christie Wins Bassmaster Elite Series On Lake Dardanelle

The thrill of victory (Jason Christie); the agony of defeat (Hackney). photo by James Overstreet

Jason Christie thought he had lost the tournament. He'd had his chances. "I got caught up in emotion and tried to boat-flip a 7-pounder (earlier in the week) so today I made sure I got my hands on them."

Christie ended up with his hands on a big blue trophy and a six-figure paycheck as he won the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle with a week-long total weight of 72 pounds, 3 ounces (19-2 today).

He had to de-throne friend Gerald Swindle form the hot seat in order to do it. Swindle had the day's biggest bag at 20-1 which gave him a total of 71-15, just 4 ounces shy of the winning weight.

Greg hackney's weight declined for a 4th straight day and he lost his grasp on the tournament lead, which he had held on days 2 and 3. He ended the tournament in 3rd place with a 71-11 total, 4 ounces behind Swindle and a half-pound off Christie's mark.

Hackney said he was grinding in one main area and he wasn't sure how much more it could produce. It gave up 21-13 on Day 1, followed by 18-1 on Day 2. Day 3 was worth 16-10 and today Hackney squeezed another 15-3 from his water.

The idea of settling in an area and keeping a lure wet was a popular one among pros who did well this week. A couple, including Swindle, noted that the better fish seemed to be out in front of the grass in which most anglers expected to find them.

Rick Clunn found most of his fish a step deeper too - 3-to-6 feet, as deep as 10. He caught many on an RC4 squarebill crankbait. When conditions called for it, Clunn used a Lucky Strike spinnerbait. When the fish started grabbing the trailer hook he got the clue to switch the crankbait.

Clunn finished 4th with 70-15 (15-4 today).

Keith Combs was 5th with a total weight of 68-3. He may want to credit Hackney with an assist, as he caught some of his fish on Hackney's signature 'Hack Attack Jig'.

As the Top 12 weighed-in and talked today, 3 keys to success this week came to light:

1 - Throw a big bait. Sacrifice numbers for the right type of fish.

2 - Hunker in an area and fish hard. While some guys were able to run around and still catch quality fish at times, the bite was often slow and you can't catch fish very well when your boat is on plane.

3 - Fish a step deeper. While there were many bass in shoreline grass, Swindle, Clunn and others said their best fish were 30-to-40 feet out in front of the greenery, generally 3-to-6 feet deep, sometimes deeper.

Hackney Leads, Clunn Closes-In, As Bassmaster Elite Series Heads To Final Day On Dardanelle

Greg Hackney has held the lead for a 2nd straight day as the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament heads into the final day on Lake Dardanelle.

"I honestly couldn't even say what I'm going to do tomorrow," said Hackney admiting that his local knowledge could hurt him. "I know too many places. Should i go here? Should I go there? The lake is full of fish."

So far, Hackney has used his experience on the lake to build a 3-day total weight of 56-8.

In addition to 'localitis' Hackney will have to fend off angling legend Rick Clunn who moved into 2nd today on the strength of a 19-8 sack. Clunn is now less than a pound behind with 55-11.

Red-hot Keith Combs climbed a notch to 3rd with a total of 54-3 and is 2 pounds, 5 ounces off the lead.

Clunn says that, while Dardanelle may be full of fish, the right size bass come in limited quantities. "You can't fish for 20, 30 or 40 bites a day. Those are the wrong fish. You've got to give up bites to get the good ones. Seven to 10 bites is absolutely the correct thing to be doing."

Hackney Takes Over At Bassmaster Elite Series On Lake Dardanelle

Day 2 of the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle began with a fog delay and 37 degree air temperatures. Not sure what Greg Hackney thought of the weather, but he found the fishing to his liking.

Hackney weighed- 18 pounds, 1 ounce to take a 9 ounce lead over Day 1 leader John Crews. The two anglers have pulled away from the pack by a margin of more than 2 pounds.

The big story today, though, was Zell Rowland's 25-5 sack, anchored by the day's big bass at 6-10, which pushed him to 3rd place with a total weight of 37-1.

Rowland's fellow veteran Rick Clunn also made a move up the standings with 17-14 today (36-3 total) to 5th place.

Between the two legends sits red-hot Keith Combs, fresh off his record-setting performance at the TTBC. (Watch his historic weigh in here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=syoOBnwV0GU )

This week Combs has only needed 36-8 to place 4th at the half-way point in this tournament. In fact, consistency will be key for all anglers this week, as there many moves up and down the leaderboard today.

Crews In Control At Bassmaster Elite Series On Lake Dardanelle

John Crews jumped out to the early lead in the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle with a first-day limit of bass that weighed 22 pounds, 9 ounces.

The veteran pro from Salem, VA pieced-together his bag one spot at a time. "One good one here, One good one there, and at the end of the day, it was looking really nice," said Crews. His biggest bass weighed 5-3.

Crews holds a 12-ounce lead over Greg Hackney.

Crews has a lot of water to himself, a factor that allowed him to go "just bouncing around" in a dozen key areas. "I don't think fishing pressure is going to be too terribly bad."

About an hour into the competition the light bulb went 'on' for Crews. "I'd been fishing one way for most of the morning. Then I changed baits and caught a four-and-a-half or 5 and saw what (type of cover) it was on so that clued me in a little bit into what I should be doing."

The type of cover the fish was on likely includes grass, as Crews says this has helped the fishing on Dardanelle since he last fished the lake in 2009. "There's more shoreline grass. Any time you get that, it's going to be good for the fishery."

In contrast to Crews, Hackney didn't have a limit until 11:30. "I really thought this morning that I must be rotating behind somebody because (in practice) the fish had been biting really good. Those first couple of hours, I was a little tense."

In similar fashion to Crews, Hackney keyed on a small hint from the fish en route to his heavy total weight. "They were relating just a hair differently to the cover than they had been. I fished slow and steady and it came together. It got better as the day progressed, but not wide open as far as numbers as it was in practice."

Hot, Clear Lake Hickory Could Make Fishing Tough For Carolinas Bass Challenge Nc Division

Bradley Rhodes and Chris Dorian caught 16.64 lbs to win on Hartwell May 10

Although he lives less than half an hour from Lake Hickory and actually works in sight of the lake, David Williams has not had a chance to practice recently for the Carolinas Bass Challenge North Carolina Division tournament there this Saturday.

“It's probably been two or three weeks ago since I was on the lake and did a little striper fishing. I have not done any bass fishing on Hickory this year,” said Williams who lives in Maiden and works at Riverview Sports right at the Lake Hickory dam.

Since he has not had any time on the lake this year and anglers can't practice the week prior to a CBC tournament, Williams said his fishing strategy Saturday will be “a guessing game.”

“I'll probably look for some topwater fish early, then try to run some points and look for some shad spawning,” he said.

One thing he knows for certain: the tournament Saturday is going to be vastly different from the CBC-NC tournament held about the same time last year.

“Last year we had flooding rains and that brought all the fish up shallow. But this year, it's just the opposite. We've had really hot weather and no rain, so the water is really clear and it is getting hot fast. Clear water always makes for a lot tougher fishing,” he said. “ I'm thinking it's going to drive a lot of the fish out deep.”

But, that could be the key to success, he noted.

“Lake Hickory is one of the better lakes to drag a jig or throw a crankbait during the hot weather months after they move out from the spawn,” he said.

“I was hoping we would get a bunch of rain. We had a big storm front come through two weeks ago and we were supposed to give five inches or so of rain out of it, but it rained all around us and we did not get any rain at all.”

Williams and his father, Gerald Williams, are about 10 spots out of first place in the North Carolina Division, but they only trail the leaders by 41 points, a gap easily covered with a high finish in the next tournament or two.

The father-son duo have been fishing tournaments together since David was a teenager and his dad was taking him fishing from the time he could walk, Williams said.

“He did not push me into fishing tournaments; I pushed him. I was competitive and I kept asking him to go fish a tournament with me. I remember fishing some of the earlier tournaments when we were competing in the parent-child divisions.”

Anglers Better Be Willing To Change Day To Day In Elite Series On Lake Dardanelle

Whoever wins the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle this week had better be very versatile, said one of the most versatile pros on the B.A.S.S. circuit.

With the weather situation roiling Dardanelle this week, anglers will likely have to fish differently each of the four days of the tournament, said Davy Hite of Ninety Six, S.C., who has a pretty strong record on the Arkansas reservoir.

“The weather has been kind of nasty,” Hite said while practicing Tuesday morning. “We've had a whole bunch of rain and we are looking for more. The temperature is supposed to make a pretty big change. It was in the mid-80s yesterday and is dropping into the 60s today. Tomorrow the low is expected to be 41 degrees with a high of 52 degrees That is a really big change for the middle of May.”

But, Hite added, the rain will probably have more of an effect on the fishing than the temperature this week.

“I don't think the cool-down is going to change the water temperature a whole lot, but all that rain will. This lake has a lock and dam on each end, so they might let the lake come up a few feet or suck it out as fast as it comes in. It's really going to change the fish, depending on what they do with the water.”

With the water level rising and possibly falling just as fast, combined with a very unseasonable cool front, things will likely change day to day, said Hite who won the Elite Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle during the same time of year in 2005 and finished 18th in late March 2009.

“This is going to be a really interesting tournament,” the two-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year said. “I don't think anybody can fish the same pattern four days in a row the way things are changing.”

Although he has never fished Dardanelle under the circumstances that prevail this week, Hite is hoping his proven versatility will help him fish to a high finish here. Currently ranked 51st in AOY points, he needs to finish strong in the last half of the Elite season if he hopes to qualify for the 2015 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell in his home state.

“This is the turning point in the season. I have to fish one tournament at a time and have some good finishes the rest of the year,” said Hite who won the 1999 Bassmaster Classic on the Louisiana Delta. “I made a mistake in fishing what I wanted to at Toledo Bend two weeks ago and it really bit me. I made a bad choice on the area of the lake I chose to fish.”

But, added Hite, who has notched eight tournament wins in his 20-year career, a win automatically puts an angler in the Classic, so nobody is ever completely out of the race.

“With the Classic on Lake Hartwell this year I'd certainly rather be weighing fish than working the show,” he said.

Clear Lake Bass In All Phases Of Spawn For Carhartt Western B.a.s.s. College Conference Regional

Catching five quality bass a day should prove to be no problem for the 40 or so teams of collegiate anglers in the Carhartt Western B.A.S.S. College Conference Regional tournament on California's famous Clear Lake this week.

Getting that big bite each day will probably be the difference, said Guillermo “Memo” Nunez of the New Mexico State Team.

Nunez, a rising junior majoring in business, and teammate Tanner Cooper, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, spent the first three days of this week checking out the fishing on Clear Lake, the first time either of them had ever fished the acclaimed big bass waters.

“We don't think it will be hard to catch 15 pounds a day, but the difference between 15 to 20 pounds to 25 pounds is pretty significant,” Nunez said. “We've caught a lot of quality fish in practice, but at Clear Lake it takes the big ones to win.”

Nunez said the bass are in all three phases – pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn.

“You can catch them just about any way you want to fish. It's just a matter of finding that big bite,” he said.

The situation on Clear Lake is 180 degrees different from the situation on Lake Amistad a year ago when Nunez and Cooper won the 2013 Carhartt Central Regional title. New Mexico State switched from the Central Division to the Western Division this year, which opened the possibility of them winning titles in two divisions in consecutive years.

“We definitely would like to win here on Clear Lake,” Nunez said. “Last year was our first legitimate tournament fishing together and it was a lot of fun. It would be pretty cool to win both divisions. As far as I am aware that has not been done before.”

At Amistad last May the water temperature was in the 50s and Nunez and Cooper caught most of their fish off ledges adjacent to deep water.

“We were casting up on flats and catching pre-spawn fish exclusively,” he said. “But here the water is up in the mid-70s and a lot of the fishing is pretty shallow compared to what we are used to.”

Hank Weldon, college tournament manager, estimated a field of 40 boats for the regional, which will qualify the Top 10 finishers for the 2014 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship July 31-Aug. 2 on Georgia's Chatuge Reservoir. He said he expects some tough competition for those 10 berths.

Mann and Baltzell take the Alabama River on the ABT with 20.51 and win $10,000

CAMDEN, Ala. — Winning a bass tournament is always a thrill, especially when its one of the largest in the state and on your home lake, like the one Jeremy Baltzell and Joey Mann won Saturday.

Baltzell and Mann won the Alabama Bass Trail South Division tournament on the Alabama River that was staged out of Roland Cooper State Park in Camden with a five-fish limit that weighed 20.51 pounds. Baltzell and Mann are from Camden.

“It’s always great when you win one, but this one means a little bit more,” Mann said.

Coby Carden and Chris Rutland finished second with 19.89 pounds. Ken Sessions and Greg Sessions were third with 19.24 pounds.

Baltzell and Mann won $10,000 plus $250 for being the highest placing team that wore Alabama Bass Trail apparel during the tournament. Carden and Rutland won $5,000. Sessions and Sessions won $4,000.

Baltzell said he and Mann used a variety of baits, including spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and plastic frogs. “We were junk fishing.” Mann said the best bites came on spinnerbaits.

“We caught our best fish early, then the bite slowed down. That’s when we started throwing a little bit of everything and going from spot to spot trying to catch some more big fish,” Baltzell said. Their catch was anchored by a 5.28 pounds largemouth.

Carden said the early bite was the best for he and Rutland.  “We had all our best fish before 8:00, then the bite dropped off.,” Carden said. “We needed one more big fish. We caught some more fish after the bite dropped off, but were never able to cull up again.”  Carden and Rutland caught their best fish on spinnerbaits.

Sessions and Sessions also used spinnerbaits to catch their keepers.  “We probably caught 40 fish, but they were all about the same size. We only culled eight or nine times,” Ken Sessions said.

Josh Aaron and Derrick Roberts finished in fourth place with 18.58 pounds. Charles Phillips and Mike Norwood finished fifth with 18.45 pounds.

Gregg Giggers and Barry Landrum had the big fish for the tournament, a 6.95 pounds largemouth.  Griggers said he caught the big fish on a swim jig. “She smoked it pretty good, It was a fun catch.”

Rounding out the top 10 were David Caylor and Allen Hayes with 17.90 pounds, Ben Etheredge and Patrick Currie, 17.88 pounds, Kevin Dees and Jim Smith, 17.85 pounds, Chad Schroeder and Chase Schroeder, 17.75 pounds, and Adam Waid and Brad Martin, 17.25 pounds.

The final regular season tournament for the South Division is June 7 on Lay Lake in Pell City.

The next North Division tournament is May 31 on Wheeler Lake in Decatur. Here is your TOP 30 Below:

Combs wins record 3rd TTBC-Sets all time 3 day weight record with 110 Lbs!

Defending champion earns third TTBC title in four years at Lake Fork

QUITMAN, TX (May 11, 2014) – The world championship of bass fishing, the Toyota Texas Bass Classic was decided by a world record-breaking performance from two-time winner and defending TTBC Champion Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas. Combs broke the tour-level world record today with a amassing 110 pounds following three days of competition at historic Lake Fork. The previous record for a 5-bass-limit was set in 2000 at Clear Lake, California by Byron Velvick with 83 pounds, 5 ounces. Combs’ total over three days broke the record by a staggering 26 pounds, 11 ounces.

“To get 100 pounds in four days is a major accomplishment, and to do it in three is unheard of, it's nothing about the angler but it’s a testament to this lake,” Combs said. “I wasn’t the only one here to crack 100 pounds on 15 bass, so that just tells you how strong and how well-managed this lake is.”

After standout performances from Combs in the first two days of TTBC competition, he entered Sunday with a four pound lead, however Stetson Blaylock, Russ Lane, Jason Christie and Randy Haynes overtook him and the lead spot saw multiple anglers in first place during an early morning flurry of big catches.

Lane was the first pro to top 90 pounds, tallying 96, which was then quickly topped by Blaylock with a 93 while Combs sat at 88 pounds. Justin Lucas was the sixth pro to top 80 while Mark Rose added a couple weighers around 10 a.m. By noon, the top seven of the Tundra Ten were within 10 pounds.

As wind picked up around the noon, the big six, seven and eight pounders that Lake Fork is famous for, started to show up. Combs bounced through several spots producing four or more catches at each.

"Midday, I got into a little rhythm but was only catching one fish per spot. I'd run, catch one, run again, catch one. I told my onboard judge, 'I'm feeling it,' and I got a little groove on,” said Combs. “I said to my judge, 'It's happening for me right now.'"

Combs was on track to collect his second Century Bag (100+lbs) of his eight year career, recording 102 pounds and regaining the lead with an 8-8 (over 24 inches) in the afternoon. Blaylock made a late afternoon run with catches at 7-8, 4-8 and 5-12 within five minutes of each other, earning him the first Century Bag of his young professional career but it proved not enough to catch Combs. Blaylock finished second at 102 pounds, 8 ounces.

Combs’ world record performance also claimed two individual statistic awards, his 42 pound bag performance on Friday earned him the LEER Heavyweight Award (largest single day weight) while his 10 pound 14 ounce catch Friday won him the ATX Wheels Big Bass Award. Combs will receive a LEER Truck Cap and a set of premium ATX Wheels for his efforts.

"You really never know what you're going to catch. Every time I set the hook today, I thought it was going to be a 10 pounder,” said Combs. “In your mind, there's no doubt of the potential Lake Fork has on any cast. There aren't many places we fish on the pro tours where that happens."

The tournament remains a non-entry fee event, with all 50 competing anglers taking home guaranteed prize money. In addition, the TTBC continued its focus on conservation and adhere to strict catch, weigh and immediate release format that has earned the event national praise for its conservation efforts over the past eight years. The program highlights the efforts of Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and after a $250,000 contribution this weekend, TTBC has given $2 million in donations to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to fund youth education and outreach programs.

Three days of world championship bass fishing also included performances from three of country music’s brightest stars. Little Big Town, Justin Moore and Pat Green entertained thousands of fans throughout the weekend. Free family fun was also a highlight of the event, with activities in the Bass Pro Shops Kids Zone and TPWD Outdoor Adventures Area. CLICK ON ATTACHMENT BELOW FOR FINAL RESULTS
