In all the years we have covered the rise of Andy Montgomery, never ever have we seen the emotion he displayed on stage Saturday afternoon for Day 3 and the final day of the Bassmaster Open here on Lake Norman. He headed into Sat in 2nd place behind local angler David Williams, who has won MANY, MANY events here on Norman. The weather changed significantly on Sat with blue bird skys and much cooler temps with morning lows in the low 50’s. Everyone figured that the weights would be the best of the 3 day event on Sat, but that was hardly the case. The final 12 anglers who made the Sat cut would struggle to get 5 fish no less 10+ lbs. With so much on the line, these final days are critical for those who have to make a charge, maintain, or seperate from the pack. Andy Montgomery, calm, cool, and new father of a 4 week old little girl, strattled up and went out and caught a fairly lean 10-6, giving him 37-10 for the tournament. He knew his strong first two days set him up nicely to win in his backyard for the 1st time in front of his family and new daughter. It was too much for him to hold back. Several times he had to stop and take a breath as he re-capped his day. The crowd was large, many of which were there specifically to see their local Pro take home the championship, and boy did he deliver.
