Hunt and Williams Take Red River Win in ABA BPS 150 Series
ATHENS, AL – Under clear skies and great fishing weather the Bass Pro Shops 150 Series held the first of four events on Saturday, April 20, 2019 on the Red River in Bossier City, LA.
The Red River showed itself in full force by rising over 7 feet this past week, but persistence and patience by the top 3 teams found themselves fighting it out for the winning position. When the smoke cleared the team of Trent Hunt from Haughton, LA and Cory Williams of Doyline, LA sat at the top of the leaderboard with 14.85 lbs with only a 2 ounce lead good for 1st place and took home the Tracker Pro Team 175XTE Tournament Edition Boat with a 75hp Mercury 4/Stroke Motor. In total this tournament paid back over 100% with a total prize purse over $30,000.00!
“We had spent a lot of time on the river the past week and I found a frog bite that was working really well in the back of an oxbow not far from here. I went out there a couple times to check on the fish and they were still there even with the rising water so this morning we went in and just put our heads down. The first bite of the morning was a good fish, but I didn’t get a good hook set and she came off. I caught the second one and from then on it stayed pretty consistent. We managed to catch about 18 fish throughout the day and culled a few times to get the weight we had. There were 2 main spots we went to, and both of them held the fish so we just caught as many as we could and were lucky enough to hold it off. This tournament was a great format and a lot of fun. We are both so excited to have fished it and won, and this is the biggest thing we have ever done as a team. What a day!” Said the team of Hunt and Williams.
Coming in a very close 2nd was the team of Mike Quinlin from Mooresville, IN and Lewis Mallory from Martinsville, IN with a 5 fish limit weighing 14.75 lbs, just 1 ounce off the lead. “We caught most of our fish flipping and pitching up here in pool 5 in McDade Lake off of the main river. It holds some cleaner water even when the river gets high and muddy like this and most of the time it’s also where the majority of the boats go. We caught enough to cull 8 or 9 times and had 20 keepers staying with the same pattern. The bite slowed down a lot and the last 2 hours of the day we may have caught a couple but that was all. Conditions were near identical to the 2018 Ray Scott Championship that I fished with the water height and color. I love coming down here. It’s a different style of fishing than we have back home and it’s also a lot warmer! This was a great tournament and we had a really good time.” Said Mike and Lewis.
Finishing in 3rd place was the Father and Son team of Don and Shane Williams, both natives of the Bossier City/Shreveport area with a 5 fish limit of 14.70 lbs, less than 2 ounces from the leaders.
Rounding out the top 5 in 4th place was Carl Broussard of Converse, LA and Randall Morgan of Rusk, TX with a 5 fish limit of 14.44 lbs, and 5th place was Sam Huckabee of Shreveport, LA and John Barrera of Milam, TX with a 5 fish limit of 12.54 lbs. Big bass of the event went to Billy Graves of Montgomery, LA and Micah Murrell of Dry Prong, LA weighing in at 4.97 lbs.
The 150 Series Championship qualifiers at this event will be the top 20 teams by place of finish to be held on Table Rock Lake in September. The winning team at the Championship will be awarded two (2) Tracker Pro Team 195 XTE Tournament Edition Boats with 150hp Mercury Marine 4/stroke Motors.
The Bass Pro Shops 150 Series is designed to provide anglers who have a bass rig with a 150hp and below the opportunity to compete against equally powered boats.
The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Red River Waterway Commission and the Bass Pro Shop in Bossier City, LA hosted the event by providing dinner for all anglers.
