MORE THAN A TOURNAMENT: FOTHERGILL CELEBRATES FISHING AND FELLOWSHIP AT TOYOTA OWNERS TOURNAMENT

There’s something special about getting a bunch of bass fishermen together in one place. It doesn’t matter whether they’re seasoned tournament veterans, weekend warriors or folks who simply enjoy spending a Saturday morning on the water. Give them a little time and the fishing stories will start flowing. Throw in one of the most recognizable names in professional bass fishing, a world-class fishery like Lake Guntersville and a company that has supported the fishing industry for years and you’ve got the makings of a pretty memorable event.

That’s exactly what Toyota Bonus Bucks pro and 2025 Bassmaster Classic champion Easton Fothergill experienced at the 2026 Toyota Bonus Bucks Owners Tournament on Alabama’s famed Lake Guntersville. While tournament competition is certainly a big part of the attraction, Fothergill believes there’s something much bigger happening when Toyota owners and anglers from across the country gather to celebrate their shared passion for fishing.

A SHARED APPRECIATION FOR TOYOTA

Professional bass fishing is an industry built on relationships. From the companies that support professional anglers to the everyday fishermen who purchase their products, those relationships help keep the sport moving forward. For Fothergill, Toyota’s commitment to the fishing community is something worth recognizing and the Toyota Owners Tournament offers a unique opportunity for anglers to show their appreciation.

“It’s just so cool to see such a big brand like Toyota be involved in the fishing industry at this level. We get to also give back to them and show them how much we appreciate what they do for us. For everyone to come together is fantastic. We all love Toyota and we’re all anglers. You can’t beat that.”

That appreciation goes both ways. Through its support of tournament bass fishing and programs like Toyota Bonus Bucks, Toyota has established a connection with anglers that extends well beyond the dealership lot. The Owners Tournament brings that relationship to life, putting the focus on the people who support the brand and enjoy the outdoors. It’s a refreshing reminder that while bass fishing can be an intensely competitive sport, the community surrounding it is every bit as important as the fish being caught.

THE CLASSIC CHAMP MAKES TIME FOR EVERYONE

Winning the Bassmaster Classic is about as big as it gets in professional bass fishing. Fothergill accomplished that feat in 2025, putting his name alongside some of the most accomplished anglers in the sport’s history. But despite reaching the pinnacle of professional bass fishing, Fothergill hasn’t lost sight of the people who make the industry special. At the Toyota Owners Tournament, he made a point to spend time with the anglers attending the event, greeting participants and sharing conversations during registration.

“I shook 90 percent of the people’s hands who came through the registration and it’s my honor to do so. I probably met 400 people or so.”

That’s a pretty remarkable number of handshakes, especially considering how much attention a reigning Bassmaster Classic champion can attract. For Fothergill, however, those interactions weren’t simply an obligation that came with being a professional angler. They were among the highlights of his experience.

“It’s so nice to be able to talk fishing with everyone and have great conversations and meet new friends. Everyone is in great spirits all the time and I am super happy to be here.”

It’s that kind of accessibility that makes events like the Toyota Owners Tournament particularly meaningful. Participants get an opportunity to interact with professional anglers in a relaxed environment, where the conversations aren’t necessarily about tournament standings, sponsorships or the next big competition. Sometimes they’re simply about fishing.

FISHING BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER

One of the most interesting things about bass fishing is how quickly it can connect people who might otherwise never cross paths. Two anglers can come from opposite sides of the country, fish completely different types of water and have vastly different backgrounds. But put them together in a room and chances are they’ll find plenty to talk about. That’s one of Fothergill’s favorite aspects of the Toyota Owners Tournament.

“People travel from all over the country to come to this event and it’s awesome to be able to make new friendships, trade fishing stories and be together in one place.”

Lake Guntersville provides a fitting backdrop for those connections. Known throughout the bass fishing world for its rich tournament history and reputation as a premier largemouth bass destination, the Alabama reservoir is the kind of place that gets anglers excited long before they launch their boats. The real value of this particular tournament, however, isn’t measured solely in pounds and ounces. It’s found in the conversations at registration, the introductions between strangers and the friendships that continue long after everyone heads home.

BIGGER THAN THE WEIGH-IN

There’s no denying that anglers love competition. It’s part of what makes tournament fishing so exciting, whether someone is chasing a Bassmaster title or competing against friends on a local lake. But the 2026 Toyota Owners Tournament demonstrates that fishing has plenty to offer beyond the final standings. For Fothergill, the opportunity to connect with hundreds of Toyota owners, hear their stories and share his appreciation for a company that supports the sport is something he clearly doesn’t take for granted. That’s ultimately what makes this gathering so special.

The fishing might be what brings everyone to Lake Guntersville but the friendships, conversations and shared appreciation for the sport are what make the experience memorable. After all, trophies eventually collect dust and even the best fishing stories tend to grow a little taller with time. The relationships built around a shared love of bass fishing, however, have a way of lasting a lifetime.
