Anglers In Action Bass Challenge Offers Break From Thanksgiving On Saturday

The thing about Thanksgiving is that a person can only eat so much turkey before he just has to do something else.

Around the Lake of the Ozarks that “something else” is the 7th Annual Anglers in Action Big Bass Challenge Saturday.

“Guys look forward to fishing the tournament the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year,” said Charlie Terrell, one of the founding owners of Anglers in Action. “By then they have had enough turkey and they want to get out and do a little fishing.”

Terrell said Anglers in Action was started in the fall of 2007 as a team circuit with qualifying tournaments leading to a championship. The Big Bass Challenge is a different format from regular tournaments, he explained. If a minimum of 100 boats are entered, the tournament pays 15 places on the total weight side, plus 15 spots on the Big Bass side.

“When we first started it was kind of hard for some guys to catch onto. Everybody weighs total fish in a tournament, but you also want to weigh your big bass every time because we pay 15 spots there, too.”

Terrell said teams pay a $200 entry fee, with $2,500 guaranteed for first place and $2,500 for Big Bass. Second place pays $1,200 on down to $200 for 15th place in both categories.

“We are expecting 100 to 125 boats for the tournament,” Terrell said. “It’s 38 degrees here now, but it’s supposed to warm up a little bit for the weekend. It’s supposed to be around 50 degrees Saturday and Sunday.”

While fishing could be a little tough, Terrell noted that it took nearly 40 pounds to win a two-day tournament on the lake this past weekend. He predicted the winner Saturday will have around 20 to 21 pounds.

“I’ve not fished the lake in a while, but they are phasing in to staging up for the winter so that is why it’s a little tough right now. They are catching them on the right banks on buzzbaits, topwater baits, Wiggle Warts and spinnerbaits. Jerkbaits are just starting to come on and when the water cools off the jerkbait and Alabama Rig will come into effect,” Terrell said.
