Fishers Of Men East Tennessee Tournaments As Much About Faith, Fellowship As Fishing

Teams in the Fishers of Men East Tennessee Division fish to win, but their main focus is on faith and fellowship, said tournament director Steve Jennings.

“Our guys are more like a family than just competing against each other,” Jennings said. “We have a good time and enjoy good fellowship. They really are the best group of guys I’ve ever been around.”

Jennings announced that the Friday night meeting before Saturday’s tournament on Watts Bar Lake will be held again at Whites Creek Baptist Church near Rockwood, Tenn. Sign-up and supper will start at 6 p.m., followed by a church service.

Jennings said the points race is “pretty close” heading into the next to last tournament on the schedule.

Rod Garrett and Paul Rodgers won the first two tournaments, but they were knocked out of first place in the Douglas tournament. Keith McDeerman and Von Bilbeck won on Douglas and are now leading the points.

The final qualifying tournament of the season will be on Loudon/Tellico July 18. The top 80 percent in points will qualify to fish in the Division 8 championship on Douglas Lake in October, Jennings said, with East Tennessee facing off against Middle Tennessee and East Kentucky and Middle Kentucky.

“We usually have 23 to 26 boats in our tournaments and we will probably have 25 or 26 boats in the tournament Saturday on Watts Bar,” he said.

Fishing should be good in the tournament, he said, and it probably will be won fishing 12 to 20 feet deep on the ledges with big plugs and Carolina-rigged worms.

“It will probably take over 20 pounds to win, it usually does,” he said.
